    Arab League chief calls for cease-fire in Syria

    CAIRO (AP) — The Arab League chief says Syrian forces continue to shoot protesters despite the presence of monitors from the organization and calls for a complete cease-fire.

    Nabil Elaraby, addressing a news conference on Monday, also called on the opposition and ordinary Syrians to aid the observers by sending them names of relatives or friends they think are detained.

    At least 150 people have been killed since the observers began their mission last Tuesday to verify the compliance of President Bashar Assad's regime with an Arab League peace plan aimed at ending the regime's 9-month-old crackdown on anti-government protesters. Assad agreed to the plan on Dec. 19.

    BEIRUT (AP) — Activists say Syrian security forces have fired on protesters calling for the downfall of President Bashar Assad in restive Hama province.

    The Local Coordination Committees, an umbrella group of Syrian activists, said troops forcibly dispersed the protest Monday. There was no immediate word on casualties.

    The Assad regime's crackdown on a 9-month-old uprising has persisted despite the presence of nearly 100 Arab League monitors inside the country.

    On Sunday, a pan-Arab body called for the immediate withdrawal of the monitors because the regime has kept up killings of government opponents even with the observers there.

        Elizabeth, thanks for your reply. Indeed the U.S., Israel, and Saudi Arabia are odd bedfellows against Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and believe or it not Iran's fellow Shiites in Iraq whom we empowered by knocking off Saddam. Russia, China, and the left-leaning regimes in Latin America could be dragged in.

      Yeah, american police dispersed the occupy wall street too,why does nobody say it? Double standards. If those protests shoot the american police(as in Syria),hi,what would you do,america?       Arab league chief a very stu-pid person and they have to kick his
      ass and throw him out from his office and he created first the
      problems for boycotting syria and now he asked for seize fire.
      Is this guy deserve to be arab league chief? I think so as all arab
      leaders are stupid like him to agree what he listened to them and
      did what the stupid leaders told him and if he did not do it they will
      kick him out as all the arab leaders are toys in the hands of foreign
      countries and no arab country till no independent and free from
      the influence or control of others. If any one of you know one,please
      let me know and i can prove you are wrong.
      No arab gulf country is free and except now syria want to have
      freedon in full and the foreign countries did not want it and they
      started the problem there.

      this is fact and i want all arab leaders to read it and to answer me
      if i am not right.
      For coming 100 years they cannot have it.
