Arctic Sea ice shrinks to second lowest level

WASHINGTON (AP) โ€” Arctic Sea ice melted this summer to the second lowest level since record-keeping began more than 50 years ago, scientists reported Thursday, mostly blaming global warming.

"This is not a random event," said oceanographer James Overland of the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "It's a long-term change in Arctic climate."

The new measurements were taken by the National Snow and Ice Data Center. It reported that the amount of ice covering the Arctic hit its lowest point late last week, covering just 1.67 million square miles (4.33 million sq. kilometers). Only in 2007 was there less summer sea ice, which has been dramatically declining since scientists began using satellites to monitor melt in 1979. Other records go back to 1953.

Each summer, sea ice melts and then refreezes starting in the fall. The summer minimum is a key measurement for scientists monitoring man-made global warming. This year's level is 36 percent below the average minimum of 2.59 million square miles (6.71 million sq. kilometers).

Since the 1980s, summer Arctic ice has shrunk from something the size of the Lower 48 United States to an area that covers just the region west of the Mississippi River, said Snow and Ice Data Center senior scientist Walt Meier.

The University of Bremen in Germany, which uses a different satellite sensor and has been monitoring levels since 2003, reported last week that this year's sea ice actually fell below the record set in 2007.

Ice Data Center research scientist Julienne Stroeve said two factors cause summer sea ice to shrink more than normal: worsening man-made global warming and localized and seasonal Arctic weather. In 2007, local weather conditions โ€” wind, barometric pressure and sea currents โ€” all were the worst possible for keeping sea ice frozen, she said. But this year, those seasonal conditions weren't too bad, she said. Even so, the data center's measurements show one of the worst years for melt.

Stroeve thinks the problem is that after years of shrinking sea ice, what's left is so thin that it doesn't survive as much as ice would have in past years. Meier said the sea ice is 40 to 50 percent thinner than it used to be.

Using computer models, scientists have predicted the Arctic will eventually be free of sea ice in the summer by mid-century; a few researchers say it could happen as early as 2015 or 2020. Overland and Meier said they think 2030 to 2040 is more likely for an ice-free summer.

Sea ice is crucial for polar bears and walruses, Overland said. Sea ice also reflects the sun's heat, so when the ice melts Earth retains more warmth, Overland said.

why are people so ignorant? They believe that we can continue to use up earths resources without any consequences or further more that global warming is not real. Well it is and humans are a major cause!!!!
    • floyd  •  8 mths ago
Well, that should mean that the oceans should be cooling dramatically...why isn't that happening?
    • floyd  •  8 mths ago
That's what melting ice does !!!
    • thetnrebel  •  8 mths ago
where was the ice a few years before the recording... could it be a natural cycle?

If the human race cleans up the earth, and the climate scientists are wrong, we still get
clean air, clean water, and renewable energy. If the scientists are right, and the human race does nothing, the human race dies.

excelent point. One course of action guarantees a positive outcome, the other is a craps shot betting everyone's future on the desire for profits today.
      • IMHO 8 mths ago
Problem is, where does the money come to do all this so-called "clean-up". I for one don't want to pay more taxes to pay for yet another useless government boondoggle.
      • Craig 8 mths ago
Just force big industry to clean up their pollution. That is source of this anti-warming rhetoric, they desperately don't want to be forced not to spew filth into the air.

Hmmm, maybe we should start trying to end our dependency on oil. Hasnt anyone noticed that oil is doing nothing but getting more and more expensive anyways? Thats due partially to flat supplies, and increasing demand. Its only gonna get worse, and eventually its going to ruin the global economy.

National Geographic predicted that in 2008 the Arctic Ocean would be ice free, yet here it is 3 years later and they still had 1.67 million square miles of ice coverage at the minimum point.
      • JOHNd 8 mths ago
So, since the 1980s, arctic summer ice has shrunk from about the size of the lower 48 states to about half that extent, by satellite measures. But not to worry, because according to Dan, someone at National Geographic magazine once said they thought it would all be gone by 3 years ago. I feel so much better now.
      • Wildgraywolf 8 mths ago
JOHNd, I think Dan meant to demonstrate that if the predictions can be so inaccurate then so might the original premise.
      • R 8 mths ago
Show me where anyone predicted an ice-free arctic in 2008. You lie like a rug!

For those of you that seem to be confused on the subject, allow me to clarify.

This is not the POLITICAL section it is the SCIENCE section and the regular participants here DO NOT GET THEIR INFORMATION FROM POLITICIANS!

Crying about Al Gore only serves to reveal you as drooling, partisan polidiots, and festering half-wits, incapable of separating political opinion from scientific fact!

Please spare us your blathering nonsense and return to the political section where you can continue your patriotic crusade to deny assistance to starving children!

dude! maybe you should try some decaf. or maybe some fiber. at least get a grip.

Again, silly alarmist article. Lowest in 50 years is meaningless in climate change. Statistics, dam statistics the resourse of liars! (Mark Twain). Oh by the way I need to check my temperature to see if it has changed .0001 degrees hotter today in case I have a fever)
      • Cheeses K. Reist 8 mths ago
0.0001 degrees Celsius increase in the global atmospheric temperature represents approximately 10^8 giga Watts of energy. That's enough to power approximately 100 category 5 hurricanes. You want fries with that?
      • Wildgraywolf 8 mths ago
Well, Cheeses your math may be correct, but real time observation doesn't support your conclusion. Has there ever been 100, 50 or 25 category 5 hurricanes? No? Then your premise and conclusion is flawed.
      • Cheeses K. Reist 8 mths ago
@Wildgraywolf: I see that you didn't get it. I calculated the total amount of energy that a 0.0001 degrees C rise in global temperature entails, and put it in to units that we are familiar with.

For example, when you read that a single lightning storm generates enough electricity to power a small city, do you shake your head in disbelief because you have never seen an electrical storm power a small city?
    • grouchyoldfart  •  8 mths ago
And the Sahara Desert used to be a lush tropical region. Its called...... global climatic change. Plus a change in the earths magnetic pole does a lot too.
      • CptSnark 8 mths ago
And now add to the mix 20 billion tons per year of once sequestered carbon to the equation.
      • rnb4me2 8 mths ago
there you go. what will you give up to heal the planet?
    • paul  •  8 mths ago
This is the second time in 50 years and countless times in the thousands of years before we even thought to check on these events, pointing to the cyclicle nature of warming and cooling.
Mother Nature just doing what comes from natural causations. Still, its a good idea to polute as little as possible, reflecting respect and a tidy mind.

Alright, the Northwest Passage will be open for business.
    • Michael  •  8 mths ago
These reports assume the data means something globally. Someplace is always warning and someplace is always cooling. Reporters (and Al Gore)have no way to judge these reports statistically so they contribute to the illusion.
    • Jim  •  8 mths ago
Reading these posts further proves that most people lack the ability to think and that our public schools have failed miserably. It's no surprise we're falling further and further behind.

I keep hearing the โ€œargumentโ€ that since we know climate has changed drastically in the past, we should assume that any current change must be due to those same natural causes. Does anyone really think that scientists are so dumb that they haven't considered and ruled out the natural causes that have driven prior changes - like variations in the solar output? The Sun has been cooling slightly, while the Earth warms rapidly, and scientists have discovered that the warming is due to something the 7 billion people of Earth are now doing - They've found that we're changing the composition of the atmosphere, by increasing the amount of CO2 in it. It's up 22% in the past 50 years. CO2 is one of 2 gasses that, despite its very low concentration, plays a big part in the Earth's climate, because it traps solar energy striking Earth in a way that's called the "greenhouse effect.". If you put glass walls and ceiling around a little garden, it gets VERY much hotter there than it was when it was โ€œopen.โ€ This is because when light strikes the plants and the ground and is absorbed, much of the energy is re-radiated back into space as lower energy โ€œinfra-redโ€, or โ€œheatโ€ waves. Glass, like the nitrogen and oxygen that make up almost all of our atmosphere, is transparent to visible light. But glass, just like CO2, is NOT transparent to infra-red. So the re-radiated infra-red can't get back out to space, and consequently heats up the inside of the greenhouse. It's the โ€œgreenhouse effect.โ€ We turn the Earth's atmosphere to a greenhouse when we add CO2 to it. It is not a natural increase in CO2 that's warming the Earth. The increase is coming from about 27 billion tons of CO2 per year that humans are now adding to the air by burning fossil fuels. The question of why the Earth is warming has been answered by 40 years of research by climate scientists. The remaining questions are 1. Whether right-wing political propagandists can succeed in perpetually maintaining public disbelief and unwillingness to act upon a conclusion that is no longer controversial in the scientific world, and 2. How much the nation and the world can come together to significantly replace fossil fuels as our primary source of energy with ones that are renewable, and develop more efficient ways of providing, conserving, and using energy without suffering any unnecessary hardships and sacrifices.

Indisputable fact...CO2 levels have been on the rise for the last hundred years.
Indisputable fact...CO2 fixers, the plant biosphere, is losing its largest contributors, the rainforests, at an alarming rate increasing even more the CO2 levels.
Indisputable fact...CO2 and other greenhouse gasses are in fact (contrary to bachman's 'science') greenhouse gasses which the increase of *will* increase the temperature of the world.

The first effects have already been seen:
Every summer there is more and more arctic ice melted, the average temperature of the world is 1.4F higher than 1880(1F in the last 30 years alone), the size & # glaciers have dropped drastically (an average rate of over 50%, some up to 86%, of glacial retreat), the rate of extreme weather patterns have increased markedly(a boiled pot churns and swirls), entire populations of animal migrating (polar bears, reindeer, and other polar animals), freeze and thaws occur several days/weeks earlier than recorded over a hundred years ago, sea levels have *already* risen an average of 6 inches, certain plants have been seen in areas never seen before (warmer varieties in previous colder areas), coral reefs are very (and I mean very) sensitive to temperature changes and there already been mass die off's, complete and partial, of several major reefs around the world.

Some people point out that volcanoes and other rare eruptions put out more CO2 than man does by a large margin...that is true but they do not understand the balance. If say all the plants in the world fix out X amount of CO2 per year and volcanoes/eruptions put out 4 times X once every four years. Then you got mankind putting out .01X every year, its small but it does not get fixed or scrubbed out of the air - it builds up throwing the previous working balance out of whack (as well as mankind cutting down the rainforests at a high rate). The data and calculations are there for anyone to see, that is if you are smart enough to do the math. Long term analyses are easier to do and has less variables to calculate then say if its going to rain in new york next week so that is *not* an argument either.

Fact:No other nation in the world other than the USA has any sort of faction that disbelieves the science of climate change.
Fact:Right wing ignorants will always oppose it because they are *told* to by their masters. Forcing industry not to pump out CO2 and other greenhouse gasses is 'bad for business' so will *always* be opposed and not for any other reason, no matter that having oceans rushing in for hundreds of miles is also even more so bad for business the short term money grab is always preferred to actual planning for the future.
