Argentina going to UN in Falklands dispute

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — President Cristina Fernandez said Tuesday that Argentina will formally complain to the U.N. Security Council that Britain has created a serious security risk by sending one of its most modern warships to the disputed Falkland Islands.

She accused British Prime Minister David Cameron of militarizing their nations' dispute over sovereignty of the South Atlantic archipelago, which Argentines say the British stole from them nearly 180 years ago.

Argentines are united in their desire to win back the islands they call the Malvinas through diplomacy and negotiation, she said, urging Cameron to "give peace a chance" by avoiding moves that push the dispute into dangerous territory.

"We have suffered too much violence already to be attracted to military games and wars," Fernandez said during a nationally broadcast address.

Britain says it originally discovered the islands and claimed them a century before Argentina existed. The Spanish crown claimed them for years, and then an independent Argentina held them before Britain seized them in 1833, driving off the gauchos.

Fernandez blamed Argentina's 1976-83 military junta and its allies in Argentina's media for rushing to invade the islands on April 2, 1982 — the start of a brief war that killed 649 Argentines and 257 Britons. Britain routed the ill-prepared Argentine troops, humiliating the junta and hastening the Argentina's return to democracy.

Other than the planned complaint at the United Nations, Fernandez's speech revealed no new international measures to support Argentina's claim to the Falklands.

The claim is enshrined in Argentina's constitution and will remain a national priority, but it will pursued through diplomacy, not war, Fernandez said.

She urged Britain to comply with United Nations resolutions calling on both sides to negotiate the islands' sovereignty — a message she has given at nearly every international forum she has attended as president.

"No land should end up being a trophy of war," she said.

British governments have said there is nothing to negotiate. London insists it won't discuss sovereignty over the islands without the support of the Falklanders, a population of about 3,100 who clearly want to remain British.

A call seeking comment from Britain's Foreign Office was not returned late Tuesday.

During her speech, Fernandez decreed that a long-secret analysis of the junta's failures be made public in 30 days.

She also announced that a mental health center would be opened to care for Malvinas veterans, hundreds of whom have committed suicide in the years since the invasion.

@Jess....If the argies sank 90% of our ships..... how did we get home? A funny one was HMS Canberra..... according to argie propaganda you sank that 3 times. You must remember it. That was the ship that sailed into Buenos Aries after the war to drop off the 11,000 argie prisoners we took

By the way, JohnS, I don't recall there being an HMS Alacrity in the war or even in your fleet back then.

      Argentina ... take a pill.
Hey, France owns Saint Pierre et Miquelon , just off the coast of eastern Canada.
And Canada doesn't get its panties in a twist .
In fact the oddity is a tourist draw for Canada .

Well that's an easy one. Canada is a grown up nation lead by adults. Argentina is a rotten country with a woman with a child's mind running it. Remember, anytime things go bad, the economy, food, whatever the crisis, the standard Argentine response is to rattle sabers and try to invade the Falklands claiming some sort of moral issue. Never was a part of Argentina, never will be. The people living there voted that in 1985 and that hasn't changed.

A good diversion from domestic problems, for an Argentine Government a la 3rd world, is to drub up that old 'Falklands' bullshittzen again..("Malvinas"..my fat arse !)..

You sir are spot on!!!! This lady has run out of money and want's the masses to look somewere else and not at her economic mess...
      • Russ 3 mths ago
Since Oil and Natural gas deposits were found near there (money) is the only reason Argentina's government is wanting the Falklands/Malvinas.
The economic problems that are starting here is the real reason why, the government doenst have the money to pay for the things it has promised to the people.

"We have suffered too much violence already to be attracted to military games and wars," Fernandez said during a nationally broadcast address. So then since the Argentines are so sensible and Britain having warships in the region is routine, there is no "serious security risk". I fail to understand the woman's problem.

Most Argentines do not know the history of their country let alone the history of the islands. This is all a distraction fro the real things that are going on in the country. There is a major economic problem brewing and Cristina needs this Malvinas issuse as a way to keep those issues from the headlines.
Cristina said no land should be a trophy of war. Well sweetie, your whole counrty is that, due to a war with Spain 200 years ago. So by her thinking, Argentina should be back in Spain's hands.
If the people of the islands want to stay British subjects, let them. Argentina only has become interested in the islands since the oil and gas reseves were discovered near there and they want that money. Nothing more.
The islands are British nd should remain British. Cristina needs to think about the problems the country has. If she did, maybe things wouldnt be so screwed up there.

Yeah Russ. It was reported the other day , that the 1982 Argentine invading troop's were surprised that none of the Falkland Islander's / inhabitant's spoke their language. The propaganda went all the way to the top of the Argentine military staff, and they did not bring any interpreter's . The invading Argentinian's must have felt that they had been lied to. And they had.

The Brit's have veto power on the U.N. security council . But even if they did not , there is nothing to negotiate. Would like to see the writer's from all the various news agency's stop throwing the 1816 or 1833 number's around . The British had a settlement in the Falkland's from 1765 on . The only country to do so. The Brit's just arrived in force in 1833 after an American frigate raided /'fired on their settlement in 1831. The French and Spanish both abandoned the outpost they handed off to each other long before Argentina declared independence from Spain in 1816 . The Brit's are the only one's that stayed, from 1765 on . The Brit's own them . And I would like to see Argentinian 's stop posting that they want the Island's back . You have to have once had something ,to want it back . The Argentinian's ancester's were not a sea faring/ocean going people, and did not even know of the Island's existence before the Dutch reported discovering them in 1600. When did Argentina even buy it's first ocean going , merchant marine trading/ fishing vessel ? 1920 ?
      • JohnS 3 mths ago
It took them nearly 300yrs after we discovered them to travel the 200 miles to visit them... if they cant be bothered to go find things thats their hard luck..... and maybe before gobbing off about the Falklands they may consider giving Patagonia back

There's nothing really left to be said as it's all been said in the threads below.
The history of the islands already exists. They have never been under Argentinian rule, the islanders believe themselves to be British therefore the UK government must protect them.

The Argentinians are the ones who militarised the area when they invaded in 1982. Britain had 22 Royal Marines stationed there in 1982 before the invasion. The British now have a permanent miltary presence so the window of opportunity has passed.

Britain is being drawn into an Argentinian internal political obsession but the Argentinians won't get any give from the British on this.

Also the Argentinian president complains that the UK has sent Prince William to the islands as a ramping up of the military temperature??? He's search and rescue pilot?? The worst thing he is likely to do is save a few Argentinians in the event that they are stupid enough to engage the British in naval combat.

They also complain that the British have sent a modern destroyer?? What did they want them to do, send a fishing vessel?? Britain has a number of modern type 45 destroyers, why wouldn't they use them?

I say take it to the UN, let them debate the issue, although it won't get past the security council.

So they're going to complain to the UN Security Council, I wonder if Argentina remembers that Englad has a permant seat and can veto any resolution that comes up.

While you are there say something about Russia giving back the Islands they took from Japan after World War II. Oh and good luck with that. The English on those Islands DON"T want to learn Spanish and I pretty sure of that.

the falklands is claim by thr britsih years before argentina exits, so it will be a worthless atempt to bing the case to the UN

I do find it funny how some are trying to make the case that even though the Falklands were never a part of Argentina and that the people living in the Falklands don't want to become part of Argentina, that the Falklands should be handed over. Why do you folks make the same case to China over Tibet? That was a war of aggression and terror as a part of the Cultural Revolution. Make China move out. Tell them to go. I dare you to.
    • David  •  London, United Kingdom  •  3 mths ago
The Falklands are a self-governing British Overseas Territory, the United Kingdom is responsible for its defence and foreign affairs, but in other matter's they goven themselves ...... and thats the way the PEOPLE who live there want it to stay. The right of peoples to self-determination is enshrined in the first article of both the UN Charter and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The International Court of Justice has held that this right is ’irreproachable’.The ONLY way that the UK would hand over sovereignty would be with the consent of the majority of Falklanders. So the Argentinians should be trying to win over hearts and minds over there .... a hard enough task already esp. after the 1982 invasion, but to make matters even worse, Argentinians are currently calling random phone numbers on the islands and inundating the islanders with threatenining and abusive calls !! .... thick #$%$!

180 years ago everyone was stealing land, one from the other. Let's face it neither Mexico, nor Central America nor South America would be predominantly Spanish had they not stole it all from the indigenous Indians just like we did in North America. But it's just a tad late to complain about it 180 years later. The Falklands were never inhabited by the Spanish nor the Argentinians. The only use Argentina had for the islands was that they wanted to use them as a penal colony back around 1820. They have been British ever since. The entire population of 3,000 is British and they want to remain that way.

Argentina should give back all of its land to the natives from whom it stole it.
