Argentina is Not Happy About Prince William's Deployment to the Falkland Islands

The heir to the British throne, Prince William, also happens to be a helicopter pilot in the Royal Air Force -- which means that from time to time he must take part in actual military missions, even when they have a whiff of colonialism. Starting this evening, Prince William begins his six-week deployment to the Falklands Island, where he'll be one of four Royal Air Force pilots stationed at the UK's base there.

It's a bit surprising that the Britain's Air Force is sending its eventual king to an actual conflict area; The UK and Argentina (which calls the islands of its coast the Malvinas) each claim sovereignty there, having fought an undeclared war for control in 1982.  The Telegraph reports that tensions over the islands have been ratcheted up recently.

So while it's safe to presume given the headline-grabbing announcement of his deployment that the prince will be out of harm's way (Prince Harry's deployment to Iraq in 2007, if you recall, was canceled as too dangerous.), Argentina isn't happy about the colonial implications of foreign royalty occupying their territory. "The Argentinian people regret that the royal heir is coming to the soil of the homeland with the uniform of the conqueror and not with the wisdom of a statesman who works in the service of peace and dialogue between nations," the Argentinian government said in a statement according to CNN.

I have family living in Argentina... I tell them this: Winners keepers, Losers weepers.

Argentina, get over it! Britiania rules the waves and the Falkland Islands evidently :-)

The Maldives Chain were ceded to Great Britain in a peace treaty with Spain after the Spanish Armada was destroyed, Argentina (as a country, did not even exist then) They have been trying for centuries to get Britain to give them back and the Crown and U.K. Government have always told them to #$%$ off"! Argentina launched an unprovoked attack on the Falklands(Maldives), heavily damaged a British War Ship and killed many Falklander Civilians as well as heavily outnumbered British Forces who were stationed there. Argentina subsequently was soundly defeated and pleaded mea culpa! (Thatcher, then Prime Minister) should have gone to Partliament and asked them to declare War against Argentina if for no other reason than that they attacked British forces and killed British subjects without any declaration of hostilities towards Great Britain. At the very least, the United Nations Security Council should have imposed Sanctions against Argentina! By the way, Cede below is right, this is about Oil and Argentina thinks they should have it not Great Britain. The Oil was discovered just prior to Argentina's attack and they had made the statement that the "maldives" belonged to them because it was in their territorial waters! Until the OIL was discovered, Argentina's attempts were only half hearted because the Islands are very remote and were populated mostly by Sheep Farmers (Falkland Wool is very dense due to climate) and their primary markets were in South America, now Argentina is trying to freeze them out in an attempt to get the Falklanders to renounce their British Citizenship which to a person have all said NO!! And they don't want to give up their commonwealth status as it would leave them too vulnerable at this time. If the Oil does begin to flow and can be transported, then they may ask for Independence as they will have the finances to support themselves!

Must Argentina be reminded of the #$%$ kick they suffered back in 1982?

Good for Great Britain ... wonder if there is oil in the waters around the islands, wouldn't that make it interesting ...? How far is Venezuela? ... maybe Harry can make an unscheduled fly-over and put one up Hugo's back side .....

The conflict there was caused by yet another south American tyrant wanting to distract his people from his crimes. The people who live there voted overwhelmingly {its called democracy} to remain with the UK ,so the occupation was removed!

Notice how they ignore the fact that the Spanish and Portuguese Conquistadores decimated all of South and Central America, and even conquered parts of North America. Argentina itself is a colonial power. it is the pot calling the kettle black. To this day, Spain claims all gold from these areas found in Spanish shipwrecks. I do not know if Portugal does or not.

This article is cr@p .... NO IT'S NOT surprising that the RAF is sending Prince William to an actual "conflict area" firstly at the moment there in NO conflict LOL there but if there was he would still probably go!
His uncle Prince William served as a helicopter pilot in the 1982 Falklands war. He was on HMS Invincible when it was attacked and flew a Sea King from the ship on anti-submarine and anti-surface missions, exocet missile decoy and casualty evacuation. He witnessed the Argentinian exocet missle attack that sunk the SS Atlantic Conveyor killing a dozen sailors and was one of the first to take off survivors. The Government was slightly apprehensive, about having the Queens 2nd son in a war zone but the Queen insisted he should remain with his ship. Andrew served 22 years in the Navy.

PLUS Prince Harry's did serve in the front line in Afghanistan He was sent there just like any other soilder ..... but under a news blackout. He served there for 4 months as a Forward Air Controller in Helmand and called in several air strikes, repelled Taliban attacks, and performed patrol duty. He was only brought home after German newspapers breached the blackout placed on the information by the Canadian and British authorities. It was considered to dangerous for his UNIT, for him to continue in Helmand. The danger he was in as just another solider was acceptable but once his loctation and unit was disclosed, every rag head Taliban in Afghanstan and Pakistain would have been after his unit!

Prince Phillip (Andrews father, Williams and Harrys grandfather) was in the Navy thoughout WW2 he was involved in the Battle of Crete, was mentioned in despatches during the Battle of Cape Matapan, awarded the War Cross of Valour, involved in the allied invasion of Sicily when as second in command of HMS Wallace, he saved his ship from a night bomber attack. He devised a plan to launch a raft with smoke floats that successfully distracted the bombers allowing the ship to slip away. He also saw action with the British Pacific Fleet and was present in Tokyo Bay when the Japs surrender was signed.

That's the way it is with the British Royal Family ... their association with the armed forces is more than ceremonial!

The authir of this article is a politically correct ignoramus. The Falkland Islands aren't a colonial possession in the sense implied by the article. The Falkands would be 'colonized' whether it was controlled by Britain (who have essentially always controlled it, almost continously since circa 1800) since it has no indigenous population. It's not like it was once occupied by an indigenous population of Indians whom the Brits deposed. These were barren islands settled by Europeans.

There are also aspects here of one of the most annoying and persistent misconcpetions of the PC left, which is that somehow, Anglo Europeans and their descendants are always imperialist invaders in the Americas, but the Spanish and their descendants are regarded as belonging there. The Spanish were just another competing white, European colonial power, not oppressed 'people of color'.

I understand that in some cases, the issue gets more complicated due to areas of Latin America where the population is either substantially racially mixed or has a large indigneous or black African population. But this is not the case in Argentina, which is overwhelmingly European. To talk about Argentinians like they are some poor oppressed 'people of color; is ridiculous.

Maybe Argentina should retake the islands.

That works out so well for them.

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the British the first to occupy, claim, and inhabit the Falklands?

(that's if you believe in the first come, claim and peacefully occupy vacant land rights)

If the Argentines want the Falkands they'll have to send an occupying army of hot latin supermodel nationalists willing to "breed the Brits out" in a generation or two (and persuade their own children to vote for a bananna republic nationalist govt rather than British administrative protection)

Until 1983 the inabitants of the Falkland Islands were not considered British citizens, they were "The Kelpers"... even today the Governor is picked by the Queen.
