Argentina: UK sent nuclear sub to Falklands

UNITED NATIONS (AP) โ€” Argentina said Friday it has information that Britain sent a nuclear-armed submarine to the South Atlantic near the disputed Falkland Islands in the latest verbal salvo in a dispute over the territory.

Argentina's Foreign Minister Hector Timerman told reporters at the United Nations that a submarine called the Vanguard with nuclear weapons was recently sent as part of Britain's deployment in the Falklands, which Argentina calls the Malvinas. HMS Vanguard is one of four British submarines armed with nuclear missiles.

"Argentina has information that within the framework of the recent British deployment in the Malvinas Islands they sent a nuclear submarine ... to transport nuclear weapons to the South Atlantic," said Timerman.

He said Argentina asked the United Kingdom through diplomatic channels if it had introduced nuclear weapons to the South Atlantic, but "thus far, the UK refuses to say whether it's true or not."

He said the deployment of nuclear arms in the region would violate the Treaty of Tlatelolco for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in Latin America and the Caribbean, designed to create a nuclear-free zone in the region.

Britain's U.N. Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant said later at his own news conference responding to Timerman: "We do not comment on the disposition of nuclear weapons, submarines."

"I don't know how he knows about submarines," he added. "I certainly don't know. The whole point of nuclear submarines is that they go all around the world and you don't know where they are. That's why they're a deterrent."

As for the treaty, Lyall Grant said that there would be no violation as long as nuclear submarines stayed out of Argentine waters.

Argentina and Britain fought a war over the islands that killed more than 900 people in 1982. With the approach of the 30th anniversary of the start of that conflict, which began when Argentina invaded on April 2, tensions have risen between the countries over the status of the British overseas territory.

Argentina claims the islands they call Malvinas, as well as the British-held South Georgia and South Sandwich islands, farther off its coast. At stake are not only the islands themselves โ€” where sheep far outnumber people โ€” but rich fishing grounds and potential undersea gas and oil in the surrounding seas.

Timerman said Argentina accepted an offer from Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to mediate with Britain. Lyall Grant said there's nothing to negotiate, because the Falklanders have now been there for nine generations and don't want change.

Britain's defense and foreign ministries on Friday also refused to discuss Timerman's claim about nuclear weapons, citing long-standing government policy not to comment on the deployment or movements of the country's submarines.

Britain's navy has 11 nuclear-powered submarines, seven armed with conventional weapons, including Tomahawk missiles, and four that carry Trident nuclear missiles, which can deliver warheads more than 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers).

Last week, Britain's Daily Mail newspaper reported the U.K. had deployed a Trafalgar-class submarine, armed only with conventional weapons, to the South Atlantic.

"We are not looking to increase the rhetoric. We have not started a war of words." said Lyall Grant. "But clearly if there is an attempt to take an advantage of the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War, we will obviously defend our position and defend it robustly."

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez initially dispatched Timerman to formally complain to the U.N. Security Council that Britain has created a serious security risk by sending the destroyer HMS Dauntless, one of its most modern warships, to the region. Britain called it routine.

Timerman also met Friday with Togo's Ambassador Kodjo Menan, who holds the rotating U.N. Security Council presidency, and Cuban Ambassador Pedro Nunez Mosquera, who heads the U.N. Decolonization Committee.

I read the Falklands have been British for over 180 years. It seems a little late in the game to start claiming ownership. One can only imagine its due to the Oil under the oceans surrounding the islands. JR was right, our tax dollars have supported the UN for far to long. It's time we took care of our own country and let all these other countries make their own way. We know who are real friends are, screw the rest!

Ummm, maybe, but looking back through history 180 years seems like but a moment...

Anytime the U.S. or any other nation sends an aircraft carrier group any where it is accompanied by nucular subs. along with other subs, many support, and defence surface ships.

It should be pointed out that all subs in the Royal Navy have nuclear reactors to propel them. There are four Trident class subs that actually carry nuclear weapons. The sub that was sent to the south Atlantic recently was a Trafalgar class sub which does not carry nuclear weapons but is nuclear propelled. The Trafalgar class subs carry spearfish torpedo's and 30 cruise missiles which can be fired at land targets in Argentina. The UK fired many such missiles at Libya to great effect..This what is scarring Argentina.

The Eurofighters, based on the Falklands, can fly to central Argentina and back without refueling and can fire missiles 500 km away. They are thus able to fire at at any enemy target in Argentina.

If Argentine is a democracy then it should respect the wishes of the citizens of the Falkland Islands to be part of the United Kingdom. The best way is to hold a referendum on the Falkland Islands with British/ Argentinian observers and if the citizens of the Falkands choose to join Argentine then the may do so, and if the choose to remain as Uk citizens then the matter is closed and Argentine should worry about the economic situation within its own borders.

Hey None , if you ask The Residents in Tiguana -Mexico if they like to consider Tiguana as an American Territory I bet they would love the Idea ,but it's still Mexican Territory , the same thing about Falkland even if their People chose to belong to the UK IT,Doesn't change the fact that It's still an Argentinian Territory ,

Hey Star1, There is a defference between a State wanting to be a Territory in the United States of America and a British Territory. Britain re-established its rule in 1833 on the Falkland Islands and if its people want to continue being a part of Britain then that is their choice.

        From wikipedia:
In 2007, 25 years after the war, Argentina reasserted its claim over the Falkland Islands, asking for the UK to resume talks on sovereignty.[61] In March 2009, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown stated in a meeting with Argentine President Cristina Fernรกndez that there would be no talks over the future sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.[62] As far as the governments of the UK and of the Falkland Islands are concerned, there is no issue to resolve. The Falkland Islanders consider themselves as almost entirely British and maintain their allegiance to the United Kingdom.[63

Okay, give the Falkland Islands to Argentina. At the same time Saint Pierre and Miquelon Islands (less than ten miles off the coast of Nova Scotia) should be taken away from France and given to Canada Ceuta taken away from Spain and givent to Morocco. More importantly, the Northern Mariana Islands returned to the Philipinnes. It does not matter what the people living in these places want."

People are starting to realize the Argentine inflation of 27%, now for 3:th year.
Prices of everything is up every time you go to the supermarket. Now people are asking for 30-40% pay-rise to keep up. 30-40 % !!!!!!!!!
How do you get the people to look the other way ?
Start with Malvina's (Falklands) and the Argentine will forget domestic problem.
Like Mau with the culture revolution in China in the 70's.
I think Argentine economy will collapse 2013 because of this inflation of cost.
President Christina Hernandez's big idol is Hugo Chavez. That says it all !
I live here and can see it.
On my way out this spring.

Argentines don't know the history of the islands let alone their own country's history. Cristina is using this for a distraction that is going on economically. Inflation is out of control, even though the government says it is only 1.4%, its more like 20-30%. Transit subsidies ending soon, so the people that voted for her (the poor and working poor) are now getting screwed and are having to pay for the governments mistakes.
Argentina is only interested in the oil and gas there. The thing is, it will never be developed and used if Argentina was "awarded" the islands. Argentina is not a "friendly" place for business, and no oil company wants to do business there because the AR government is always changing the rules. Argentina has a vast reserve of minerals, oil, and natural gas to be extarcted but no energy company wants to develop anything due to this everchanging use of the "rules".
There are way too many bad things going on in the Argentine economy that this distraction will keep the people from thinking about them. It is only few weeks to months before the money runs out. Soon enough, Argentina will be like the rest of the world, in an economic downspin that cannot be stopped. It's only a matter of time.
Let the Falklands (Malvinas) remain British, as that is the will of the islands inhabitants. Cristina needs to focus on the issues that are plaguing her country.

Seems that TRUE "IGNORANCE" does PREVAIL with realistic misinformation from the Manipulative Controlled PRESS, with a real FATE of TRUTH in this SAGA, from all corners which had won positions within the COMMUNIST UNITED NATIONS current Operators which even they NOT HAVE the $$$ to pay the roll for the HUGE Building in New York, neither the OAS, they have no $$$ even to deploy NO ROLL what so ever. Anyone does know from what backgrounds the current President of Argentina, and ex husband, as well their current Political ascendant they come from...? - Anyone knows HOW MANY CRIMES and DEADS they had portrayed with their unlawfully Guerrillas Armies in the 60's, 70's and part of the 80's they had commited..? - How Many Corporations did suffered their terrorisms. Today certainly they are Suporters of the Old CUBA, latest CHAVEZ from Venezuela, all the Islamic
cultures around the world of terrorist.., and the new Communist BOLIVIA, the IRANIAN and Palestinian warfares worldwide, with direct linkages to Al-Qaida. If any person would had studies History, the Peronist Party was the biggest THEAFT and THUGHS in the whole path of Argentina, when England was building the Railways for the Future of the Nation, Gral. Peron took at the time US$150M, which never NO ONE knew how end such monies. Didn't Paid all the Armaments given from after WWII from all Europeans Countries, plus between Argentina, Peru, Paraguay, Mexico, Guatemala, time of the creation of the OAS they gave accommodation to all the Communist Leaders who killed Millions of their siblers in WWII.
Not counting that Hitler didn't died neither commited suicide. He died in 1987 in Paraguay after he changed 4 times his own name, plus some 978 diciples of his Army and Gov, that escaped from Crime Tribunals, as money was fed from the old Russia, when USA knew the existance of such Criminals were alive in Moscovite places as well in Africa. Similar story. that Salvador allende not commited Suicide, as he was killed by Cuban Bodyguards in the Sept-1973 when he was washed away, after he killed more than 2300 individuals and families Prior PINOCHET took Over Control of Chile, and delivered an Organized Nation after the Communist way, as we have today in same way in the current Administration in USA.
Thanks to Christians Organizations and History, not one wants to see, analyze facts, or see TRUTH. So be it. If UK had send protection to the Falkland Islands, it's because the people of that English Terrotiry it's belongs to the Commonwealth of England and the SELF own Determination of the Flakland ISLANDS, they not want to be part of the CROOKNESS WAY of Argentina, neither be part of TERRORIST INTRUDERS in their home, land and Lives.
Hope our LORD JESUS, made JUSTICE for once an all. Falkland Island it's today under same way as ISRAEL been attacked by Chronies from around the world, THUGHS of this Current Crazy World. To end such non Democratic System, the Elections of 2012 in the USA must become once again the WORLD POLICE and Russians with China and North Korea keep things in the COOL, unless they find the size of their right tight shoes.
Tolerance and Patience has a limit. We true FAITH is not Dormant, it's just in Peace and waiting to move up when never expected toward the :LEWDNESS of such Groups. Mr. Obama, be assured that the world it's wathing all your moves, and Clinton Clan, also be assured that Thanks to your CORRUPTED manouvers, the world is where it's today.

Why is Argentina so anxious to cause trouble? They're like a neighbor who tries to move the fence post. The Island belongs to the people that live there.
