Argentine teachers reject raises in 11-day strike
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Argentine teachers have rejected 31 percent raises in an 11-day strike that has left 3.5 million children out of school.
Striking teachers in Buenos Aires province are demanding a 35 percent salary hike and rejected the 31 percent offered by Provincial Gov. Daniel Scioli Tuesday.
The Buenos Aires Education Workers union said Wednesday that teachers will continue striking and the conflict will only be solved if the provincial government meets their demands.
Economic analysts estimate Argentina's inflation is at least 30 percent this year, one of the world's highest. Unions want pay rises in line with rising consumer prices.
Teachers unions have also been striking in a dozen other Argentine provinces. In Buenos Aires province they threaten to continue the stoppage indefinitely.
