Argentine train slams into station, 100s injured

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — A packed train slammed into the end of the line in Buenos Aires' busy Once station Wednesday, injuring at least 340 morning commuters, Argentina's transportation secretary said.

"There are people still trapped, people alive, and there may have been fatalities. We don't know if there are dead people" in the wreckage, J.P. Schiavi told reporters at the station.

The commuter train came in too fast and hit the barrier at the end of the platform at about 12 mph (20 kph), smashing the front of the engine and crunching the leading cars behind it, Schiavi said. One car penetrated nearly 20 feet (six meters) into the next, he said.

Most damaged was the first car, where passengers make space for bicycles. Survivors told the TeleNoticias channel that many people were injured in a jumble of metal and glass.

Passengers said windows exploded as the tops of train cars separated from their floors. The trains are usually packed with people standing between the seats, and many were thrown into each other and to the floor by the force of the hard stop.

Many people suffered bruises, and many with lesser injuries were waiting for attention on the Once (OHN-say) station's platforms as helicopters and more than a dozen ambulances took the most seriously injured to nearby hospitals.

"This machine left the shop yesterday and the brakes worked well. From what we know, it braked without problems at previous stations. At this point I don't want to speculate about the causes," Ruben Sobrero, union chief on the Sarmiento line, told Radio La Red.

The motorman has been hospitalized and the union hasn't been able to speak with him yet, Sobrero added.

"One car penetrated nearly 20 feet (six meters) into the next..."

I'd be very surprised if no one has been killed.

I would have to agree with you.

20 so far according to the television. How sad.
The trains here are in bad shape meaning they are old. I have seen other problems with the trains and I try not to ride in the car that is for bikes. I also try to ride in the middle of the cars, as I do not trust the aging trains.
I expect more things like this to start happening as the goverment subsidies ended, and Argentines are notorious for cutting corners on safety.

I can't believe how STUPID some of the people are with their postings. More than likely the train operator fell asleep because of fatigue with the job. Was this at the end of his shift? No one will know until the investigation is complete. I can't believe people are so stupid as to jump to conclusions about something without having the facts first. I happen to be a train operator and there could be several reasons why this happened. Get all the facts first then point the finger.

Good luck trying to reason with Yahoo! posters, the dredge of American society.

I found it ironic that after jumping to a conclusion (train operator fell asleep because of fatigue), you berate others for jumping to conclusions. Or was your berating due to your disagreement with those conclusions that were so high that people had to jump to them?

Prayers understandable. How does love come into picture under the present situation.

Love comes into the picture because we are to love our neighbor. We are all brothers and sisters.

That shocked me when I read it. I couldnt believe a train car plowed 20 feet into another with only a 12 mph impact. Are their trains made out of aluminum foil?

it doesnt take much man, with all that tonnage, its a serious force, even at that speed

No, they're made out of steel and iron. This makes them very, very heavy. F=ma. When you have a lot of mass in motion, you have a lot of force.

I would have thought it was Captain Schettino but he would have jumped off before running into the station.

Here in the US, they have short range radio transmitters and detectors which automatically apply the brakes in station to avoid an end of line crash like this. Incredibly inexpensive compared to the cost of the train and lives.

They should stop using old trains from Spain. Argentina buys a lot of second hand trains from Spain.

This is bad, many families will suffer. Well wishes to the victims and their families. One thing though, why would the union get to talk to the motorman? Shouldn't that be the police?

And this has nothing to do with the fact Argentina and Britain are at odds. Something smells fishy....
