    Armani Prive's Eastern Promise

    Go east young lady, go east. Giorgio Armani dedicated his latest haute couture Prive Collection to Japan, sending models dressed as Geisha gals, Noh theatre ladies and Kimono-clad stars down his runway in Paris on Tuesday, July 5.

    Entitled "Homage to Japan," this fall 2011 couture collection marked the first time the Milanese couturier had ever devoted a show to any country.

    "Japan has always been a big influence in my designs. However, I wanted to note in this show not only the richness of its culture, but the remarkable courage shown by the Japanese people in the face of natural and nuclear disasters. I think we all agree that few other people would have behaved with such calm and sensitivity faced with this ordeal," Armani said backstage prior to the show, staged in the Palais de Chaillot, on the opposite bank of the Seine to the Eiffel Tower.

    Armani opened with delicately draped shining technical fabric black coats, worn over just below the knee dresses all featuring some inspired Japan prints. All these prints were created brand new in the Italian couturier's atelier, and featured floral print mikado, abstract waves or hyper sized water lilies.

    Using prints as detailing of pockets, collars, hems or even whole sleeves in slinky black velvet suits, silk cady cocktails or shantung jackets gave the clothes an exotic touch and a bravura finish.

    Obi added belts, micro leather bows and deep red micro clutches added to the oriental mood, as did a series of sensational hats from Philip Treacy. The brilliant Irish hatter whipped up cunning skullcaps topped by felt bows, beautiful waxed cane twisted Geisha punk constructions and several potpourri of fabric flowers.

    It's been a busy two weeks for Armani, who also staged two menswear shows in Milan in late June, and had the honor of dressing Charlene Wittstock for her wedding to Prince Albert II of Monaco last Saturday.

    But this was the high pint of his summer, a classy display of couture and a cool expression of Armani's innate understanding of the aesthetics of Japan, a country where he has always been heralded as a design great.
