Army private faces arraignment in WikiLeaks case

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — An Army private accused of spilling a mountain of U.S. secrets to WikiLeaks is being asked for the first time to enter a plea to the charges.

The arraignment of Pfc. Bradley Manning begins Thursday afternoon at Fort Meade near Baltimore.

Officials say Manning also will be asked whether he wants to be tried by a judge or a jury.

The 24-year-old native of Crescent, Okla., faces 22 counts, including aiding the enemy. That charge carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Manning has been locked up since May 2010. He allegedly gave the anti-secrecy WikiLeaks website more than 700,000 classified documents and video clips while working in Iraq.

Defense lawyers say Manning was a troubled soldier who shouldn't have had access to classified material.

I resent having to help fund this traitors defense. He didn't care who he hurt, so now let's hurt him.

Probably didn't, hope this little guy isn't taking the fall for an officer that they wanted to protect.

No. He wasn't a FNG private. He was a private because he was a #$%$bag, but he still had a job to do. His access to the network isn't uncommon at all. Even if someone gets into trouble, he can still have access to the network as part of his job. Manning's history shows that he was a POS, but people probably felt sorry for him, so they didn't want to burn him. His family life, his school life, and his career life spell complete failure. Hopefully, he'll soon be forgotten in the long and miserable time he spends in a military prison. Weakness and toleration led to the security failure.

There is no "rank" categorized into the level of information you have access to. It goes off of your clearance level and your "need to know" basis. I was an intelligence analyst as well and to hold that position you have to hold a certain security clearance.

      He certainly is "troubled" now.

I dont care what his motivation was, he was serving his country under oath and the responsibilities that go along with that. He is a traitor, let the punishment fit the crime.

He will be tried using facts. He stole classified data and gave it to someone he knew would give access to our enemies. He is a spy. He should be treated as such. And the penalty for being a spy during a war is? Death.

Manning is using mental illness as a scapegoat versus taking any responsiblity.
He wasn't that mentally ill to post all the damaging classified information on the web.

He's gay, of course he's mentally ill.

i think anyone would go mentally ill based on what Ive read and heard of how they are treating him. Aren't we a nation of laws? Isnt there a presumption of innocence until proven guilty?

      Bring back the firing squad.

If this young soldier was aiding the enemy during wartime, isn't this an opportunity to invoke the death penalty under the UCMJ?

I am fairly certain that they weasel out of that by saying that the US never officially declared war on (Afghanistan, Iraq) just as the Korean war was called a "police action" or something similar. No war was declared, hence no "wartime treason". More technicalities that protect the guilty.

        #$%$ it Shades...Your correct.

Isn't treason during wartime still punishable by death?

Execute that traitor! I believe that censorship, invasion of privacy/freedom are necessarily for the protection and defense of America. Everyone who supports manning is a commie.

He's a traitor during time of war. The uniform code of military justice will deal with this guy. He's about to learn it isn't like court TV. He will never see the light of day as a free man again.
