The Arthritis National Research Foundation is celebrating 15 years of placing 90 cents or more of every dollar raised into research programs nationwide. Continuing to fund the next generation of researchers in the search for a cure.

Helene Belisle, Executive Director, joined the Arthritis National Research Foundation (ANRF) 15 years ago. At that point, ANRF was awarding one or two research grants totaling $50,000-$100,000. The ensuing 15 years has been a period of careful and planned growth for ANRF, now routinely funding approximately $1,000,000 in research every year to 12-20 scientists across the country. “We are providing grants for these brilliant young scientists at a time in their career when the funding is vital to their success and ability to stay in research,” said Belisle.
ANRF funds young, post-doctoral researchers with cutting-edge ideas studying the causes of arthritis and its related autoimmune diseases. Research is the key to new treatments and cures. ANRF works to ensure that donor’s contributions are distributed as efficiently as possible to the top-tier researchers chosen to receive grants. “91 cents of every dollar goes into research programs,” says Kevin Donohue, ANRF president. “This is a figure we strive to maintain year after year and have done so for the last 15 years.”
Reaffirming ANRF’s efficiency is the independent, online evaluator, Charity Navigator, which has awarded ANRF their highest rating of 4-stars every year since they began evaluating ANRF four years ago. “We are very small administratively, with only two full-time employees; this ensures that our donors’ gifts are used efficiently for arthritis research,” said Belisle.
The Arthritis National Research Foundation is funded entirely by private donors. ANRF receives no government support for its efforts and they need your charitable contributions to continue the search for a cure.
“Research is the key to finding a cure,” says Dr. Gale Granger, Professor of Immunology, ANRF board member and renowned researcher. Dr. Granger’s discovery of Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) and Lymphotoxins have led to the current “anti-TNF” treatments for rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. The Arthritis National Research Foundation funded Dr. Granger’s work at University of California, Irvine 40 years ago and now he works with ANRF to help pave the way for young researchers. “The younger researchers, with the fresh, new ideas, are the future of arthritis and autoimmune research,” says Dr. Granger. “They will be the ones to find a cure and are the people we have to keep in research.”
