Artist brings 3-D pavement art to Grand Canyon in 1st semi-permanent display in North America

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - An artwork on display just outside the Grand Canyon is taking chalk art to a new level.

The three-dimensional work, called the "Grand Canyon Illusion," is on display at the National Geographic Visitor Center in Tusayan, near the South Rim entrance to the park.

The artist, Kurt Wenner, studied Renaissance art in Europe and started out making two-dimensional chalk art on the streets of Rome decades ago. That morphed into an art form of his own, making objects appear to rise and fall in 3-D pieces. The one on display near the canyon has visitors perched atop spires and starting down a winding trail that seems to plunge into the gorge.

The piece blends the visitors who pose in it with a scenic, infinite backdrop. You can see it through the end of October.
