Canada’s month-long CONTACT photography festival will take over the city of Toronto with numerous gallery exhibitions, public installations and arts events. The inaugural US edition of London’s Frieze art fair will be launched in the Big Apple under the banner of Frieze New York.

The world's leading galleries gather for this two-pronged art fair which aims to tap into what is fast becoming the world's largest market for contemporary art. Art Beijing is Asia’s largest art fair in terms of exhibition area. In 2012  the Art Beijing Contemporary Art Fair and Art Beijing Fine Art Fair will be held jointly as Art Beijing 2012 for the first time. Photo Beijing and the themed exhibition Art Breakthrough - Art Unforbidden will be co-located with Art Beijing. It aims to attract the world's best contemporary art and photography at enthusiasts, collectors and critics. Last year more than 40,000 art lovers came to see the works on display by more than 80 international and local galleries.

15th CONTACT Toronto Photography Festival

CONTACT is the world's largest annual photography event. It attracts more than 1,500,000 visitors each year. The month-long festival is organized in collaboration with galleries throughout Toronto and comprises exhibitions, public installations, lectures, films and events. The festival aims to help audiences explore how photography informs and transforms our experience of the world. Additional major photography events in 2012 include PHotoEspaña, Les Rencontres d'Arles, the New York Photo Festival, Photo London, Paris Photo, FotoFest and the Hereford Photography Festival.

The inaugural edition of Frieze New York will be housed in a bespoke temporary structure in Randall’s Island Park. The contemporary art fair, which bears strong ties to its London counterpart, will present approximately 180 forward-thinking galleries and works by more than 1,000 leading artists. The Frieze Art Fair and the debut edition of the Frieze Masters will take place in Regent’s Park, London, UK October 11-14, 2012.

Joan Miró: The Ladder of Escape

One of the most influential modern artists of the last century, this show of 120 paintings, drawings, sculptures and print works emphasizes the Spanish artist's variety of visual styles, including Fauvism and Surrealism, and his political engagement. This exhibition of leading Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein shows more than 130 paintings and sculptures, plus 30 rarely seen drawings and collages covering all periods spanning the artist’s career. Beyond his iconic Pop art paintings, the show includes war cartoon paintings, late nudes, and Chinese landscapes, following his versions of Cubism, Surrealism and German Expressionism and use of alternative media.

Nuit des Musées, International Museum Day

During the week of May 18, museums and art institutions around the globe will be hosting various events in celebration of both Nuit des Musées (Long Night of Museums) and International Museum Day. Long Night of Museums originated as a trend in Berlin in the 1990s and has since spread throughout Europe, with more than 100 cities now participating. International Museum Day dates back to 1977 and is typically celebrated each year on May 18 to raise awareness about the importance of museums within our society. Generally, museums will open their doors to the public for free on these days and extend their opening hours late into the night.

FutureEverything Festival

Formerly known as the Futuresonic festival, the FutureEverything festival is a wide-ranging event that includes "world premieres of astonishing artworks, an explosive city-wide music program, and visionary thinkers from around the world." It is considered to be one of the top international ideas festivals alongside TEDx, 99% and South by Southwest. A host of satellite events and workshops will also take place around Manchester parallel to the festival.

5th ART HK 12 - Hong Kong International Art Fair

ART HK has quickly become one of the leading contemporary art fairs in Asia despite its relatively recent appearance on the Asian art circuit. The event attracts an interesting mix of international collectors, curators and museum directors who travel to the event to scope out the thriving Asian art scene. In 2012 ART HK will host 266 galleries from 38 countries. A strong lineup of Asian artists will complement a leading mix of high-caliber international galleries in 2012. Art Basel and Art Basel Miami Beach organizer, the MCH Group, has purchased a majority ownership stake in Asian Art Fairs Ltd. and will convert ART HK into the Asian edition of its Art Basel brand over the next couple of years. Asia is home to a long list of "international" art fairs in 2012 including Art Taipei, Art Singapore, Art Tokyo, the KIAF, and SH Contemporary.

Picasso to Warhol: Fourteen Modern Masters exhibition

A touring exhibition of famous artworks from New York’s world-renowned Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) -- including pieces by Andy Warhol, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso -- will be shown at the Art Gallery of Western Australia as part of the gallery’s Great Collections of the World series. The Art Gallery of Western Australia will be the only Australian venue to host this exhibition. The partnership with New York’s MoMA will give visitors the chance to see exclusive highlights from this outstanding collection, many of which have never been seen outside the United States. The large-scale exhibition will feature more than 100 modern art masterpieces by 14 iconic artists of the 20th century. Five subsequent exhibitions at the gallery will feature works from MoMA’s extensive collection.

The London 2012 Festival is being hailed as the “biggest festival London has ever seen.” The major 12-week-long event will be held concurrently with the Olympics Games and will highlight the very best in music, theater, dance, visual arts, literature, fashion and film from the UK and abroad. The festival is also the finale of London’s Cultural Olympiad, a four-year arts event that is described as the “largest cultural celebration in the history of the modern Olympic and Paralympic Movements.”
