Asus sails past 1080p with Transformer Pad Infinity tablet

Rumors of high-resolution tablets have been swirling for months now, and a high-res iPad is almost certainly on the way, but Asus seized the honor of being first to make it official on Monday with the Transformer Pad Infinity. The upcoming Android 4.0 tablet will offer an impressive resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 – higher than many laptops and even most HDTVs.

By making the vertical resolution 1,200 pixels rather than the usual 1080, Asus will actually shift the aspect ratio from 16:9 to 16:10, a less “skinny” form factor that squeezes a bit more into the sides of the screens when held in portrait mode. It also emits a squint-worthy 600 nits at peak brightness. In typically hyperbolic marketing fashion, the panel will wear the title “HD Super IPS+.” Interestingly, the company’s pre-conference briefings omitted the physical size of the screen. While that might suggest it’s something other than the same 10.1 inches as the company’s other Transformer offerings, pictures suggest it remains the same.

Whatever the size, it takes plenty of hardware to drive that many pixels, and the Transformer will come packing. It runs Nvidia’s 1.6GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor… but only in its Wi-Fi configuration. The 3G and 4G versions will both step down (a bit) to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 platform. Both versions include 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of built-in storage, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of Asus’ free lifetime WebStorage. The company also has high expectations for the 8-megapixel camera with 5-element lens.

True to the Transformer name, the Infinity will have any accompanying dock that adds both a keyboard and extra battery life. With the internal 25-Watt-hour battery plus the 22-Watt-hour battery in the dock, Asus claims the Infinity will deliver 16 hours of battery life, or 10 without.

Although it will clearly take a back seat to the Infinity, Asus also announced the Transformer Pad 300, which gets the same hot Tegra 3 chip and camera, but without the high-res display – just a 1,280 x 800 IPS model. What it lacks in pixels, it will make up for in, well, color: Asus plans to break away from the standard slate and black to offer the 300 in red, white and blue.

Asus hasn’t yet announced pricing or availability for any of its MWC 2012 announcements, including the long-awaited PadFone.

@NUNYA..Are you on drugs. You would be hard pressed to find a more solid product. Are you just another fanboy upset that apple is falling behind?

On such a small screen, 1920x1200 is not going to be very useful.

all the izombies must be having a fit, lol
wait till the ipad3 gets released, and they'll find the specs the specs will already be outdated, much like the the 4S (which is still 3g!) bha ha ha ha

What the article failed to mention is that original Transformer Prime owners were reporting weak wifi and non-existing GPS on their devices. The Transformer Prime Infinity, rebranded from the TF700T showcased at CES 2012, fixes many of the problem the original Transformer Prime had. Original Transforner Prime owners must be royally #$%$ about this since the Transformer Prime Infinity is being release just a few months after the Transformer Prime was released.

their fault for being guinea pigs, I never buy new tech until 3-6 months after release. not only is it generally cheaper but the firmware bugs and whatnot are fixed.

NUNYA14, you really are an insult to humanity. You have proven to world, that stupidity springs up and shows it ugly head. If you have been paying attention to the news at all, you would have seen that, the Apple iPad is made IN CHINA!!!
My kids have Asus laptops, and play World of Warcraft just find fine. No problems at all.

Did you notice that there's no price? I little picture would have been nice too.
      • OOPS TRY AGAIN cause yaho ... 2 mths ago
probably because the price is insane like all new tech that has no competition yet. $450 4tb hitachi hard drives anyone?

Who cares? Only way people will be able to tell the difference is if the screen is 50" like a real hdtv (ie 480p vs 1080p, or dvd vs blueray). I guess you'll be able to tell when the icons are so small that you need a magnifying glass to read them. Other than bragging rights what's the point? I'd rather have a faster cpu to the point it's faster than my 100lb water cooled rig. A portable supercomputer would be more useful. This makes as much sense as having 1200p on a smartphone.

looks like asus' stockholders or someone that needs a bigger e-pe/nis doesn't agree. #$%$ ever. fools and their money are soon parted.

Yeah, progression who needs it. 1080p is as clear as it can be so no point in pushing ever so slightly ahead. Its why I still use Beta. Better quality then vhs and you can't tell a difference compared to blue ray because my tv is from 1986.

what brand? kicks a/s/s tv if it lasts 25 years

Only other choice (tablets/online reader/wireless &smart phone) beside china is samsung. Asus is pegatron or the second china electronic company with foxconn , has higher workers standards, and builds apple computers too and is now making the iPads 2 and coming 3 model. Should be similar to a special tiny 7" sony small laptop put out 2 years ago was a 1,920x something unreal sharpness but Sony as usual over priced it.
      • Aqua 2 mths ago
But then again Sony laptop is china pegatron or foxconn build to order, (only 2 motherboard builder) including the playstation and all brands game station .that could explain the higher markup .

I think that resolution is overkill.
I have 17" laptop which have resolution 1920x1080 and I think that is just right resolution for size.

Isn't 1080p the most the human eye can actually process?
      • Sam 2 mths ago
        No,
The eye can process MUCH more.
The determining factor is not actual pixels...but pixel density.
1080p at TV viewing distances are FAR less than what the eye can discern.
BUT, 1080p on tablet size at tablet viewing distance is STILL not close to visual acuity limits.
Assuming 7.4" screen edge with 1080 pixels...you have under 150 pixels per inch...but visual acuity limits are closer to 350-400 pixels per inch at that distance.
Again, these are "theoretical" (average) limits...some people have better acuity, some worse.
Either way, you can see that the limits of the human eye are FAR better than virtually anything that is currently offered.
The things that get close are some of the newer cell phone offerings...with pixel densities over 300-350/inch.
Even close up, those are starting to reach the limits of eye differentiation.

Hey NUNYA14.....do you actually "feel" stupid?
    • Farrell  •  2 mths ago
Anything over 720p isn't noticeable until you start getting into 40 inch+ screens.
    • Chouster  •  2 mths ago
Did they get the permission to use Transformer trademark from Hasbro? Another potential legal fight. They should just call it Transforming to avoid all the troubles.
    • Hollycow  •  Richardson, Texas  •  2 mths ago
can't tell the difference between 720 and 1080 unless they're next to each other.
