athenahealth to Revamp Health Care with Strategic Alliances

athenahealth, Inc. (ATHN), recently announced that its cloud-based athenaCoordinator Enterprise Population Manager has been selected by Granite Healthcare Network (:GHN) in order provide better care quality across GHN’s network.

GHN is a partnership of five independent New Hampshire charitable hospitals, namely, GHN's Catholic Medical Center, Concord Hospital, LRGHealthcare, Southern New Hampshire Health System, and Wentworth-Douglass Hospital.

The hospitals have a shared data-driven population health management program. Through this, they share best practices and acquire jointly purchased services contracts to provide the best quality care to patients at affordable costs in a bid to revamp the state’s health care machinery.

The collaboration with athenahealth will help GHN effectively recognize patient activity and chalk out the gaps in care. Subsequently, the group members can coordinate care across their growing network of risk-based payment arrangements.

Of late, athenahealth has entered into a number of strategic partnerships. One of them was with Ingenious Med. This is part of athenahealth’s More Disruption Please (MDP) program, through which athenahealth is looking to accelerate high-value innovation via the cloud.

athenahealth also entered into a partnership with Henry Schein Medical, the U.S. Medical business of Henry Schein (HSIC) to help physicians operate highly-efficient, successful practices, as well as to provide high-quality care through the delivery and use of athenahealth's athenaOne suite of Electronic Health Records (:EHR), integrated revenue cycle management, and patient communication services.

Notably, a few days back, the KLAS EMR Interoperability 2014 report announced athenahealth as the most favorable among select vendors for its overall contribution to its clients' interoperability success, inter-vendor cooperation, and incorporation of outside data into health care providers' workflow. The survey took into consideration 220 participants across inpatient and ambulatory settings.

With the recent partnerships, athenahealth is looking to improve overall health care and revamp established methods. It remains to be seen, however, if the recent developments can help the company contest against strong peers like Allscripts Healthcare Solutions (MDRX), Merge Healthcare Incorporated (MRGE) and Quality Systems (QSII).

Currently, athenahealth has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
