As a past president and 18-year member of the board, Bartlett has been very passionate about helping the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS.) She believes in their mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and myeloma, and improve the quality of life for patients and their families.
The Man & Woman of the Year campaign is a fundraising competition among individuals in the community who vie for the honor of being the Man or Woman of the Year. Candidates are judged solely on their fundraising efforts-each dollar raised comprises one vote. The candidates who raise the most funds to help advance the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during a ten-week campaign, beginning at the Kickoff Party and culminating at the Grand Finale Celebration, will be named the Man & Woman of the Year. The candidates raise money in honor of local blood cancer survivors, the Boy and Girl of the Year.
“The best part of the campaign was reaching out to 500 friends, family, and clients and seeing the overwhelming support from about 300 of them,” said Bartlett. “They were proud to help such a worthy organization in bringing cures to blood cancers and helping patients like Jordan and Christina, our boy and girl of the year. It was so gratifying to help this organization that has been part of my life for the last 18 years.”
As a theme song for the campaign, Bartlett chose "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge. One chorus line, "We are family, I got all my sisters with me," defined her mission for this campaign. With the help of her two sisters, Linda and Terri, Bartlett participated in the campaign in memory of their mother, Ann Bartlett, a dedicated LLS volunteer. Through example, Ann Bartlett taught her daughters the importance of charitable giving. Ruth Bartlett's focus during the campaign and in working for LLS was not only on fundraising, but also encouraging patients and their families in the struggle to beat cancer.
“We are all very proud of Ruth’s achievement, especially for the impact it will have on patients’ lives,” commented Bill Godshall, Partner at Frazier & Deeter. “I competed in the Man & Woman of the Year contest in 2010 and I can tell you it takes dedication, hard work and passion for the cause. In many ways, Ruth was my mentor. I am so glad to see she won the event this year.”
The 2011 Man of the Year, Harry Jones, a partner at Edge Capital Partners LLC, raised $66,259. All funds raised were in honor two local children who are battling blood cancers but are doing well. Jordan, our Boy of the Year, is 6 years old and Christina, our Girl of the Year, is 11 years old. The Grand Finale celebration was held on June 4th at the Lowe’s Atlanta Hotel.
