Edison Coins "Hello"

"Hello" is a deceptively simple word with a rich history. The first version of the word is holla, as in Gwen Stefani's "Holla Back Girls" but it dates back to at least 1400 according to the Online Etymology Dictionary. Holla was used to attract attention, as was the later alteration of 1781, hallo. Thomas Edison is credited with coining the "hello" alteration in 1877. He suggested the greeting "hello" be used rather than the

"ahoy ahoy" greeting suggested by Alexander Bell according to Today in Science History.
