August 28: National Bow Tie Day, Radio Commercial Day, National Cherry Turnover Day, Dream Day

    National Bow Tie Day

First there was planking, then Tebowing, and now … bow tying? Yep, that's right! Aug. 28 is "National Bow Tie Day" and bow tie-sporters all over the world will be tying up their bows in celebration. Currently Dhani Jones, former University of Michigan and NFL linebacker, holds the Recordsetter World Record for bow tying. As part of a fundraiser for young adults with cancer, Dhani tied a bow tie in just 13.59 seconds!

Do you wear a bow tie? If so, you're in good company. Here are some celebrities famous for getting their bow tie on:

    * Winston Churchill - This British statesman inspired the Blenheim, a navy bow tie with white polka dots named for his birthplace.

    * Pee-Wee Herman - Actor Paul Reubens is best known for his comic character Pee-Wee Herman, who always wore the same outfit which included a red bow tie.

    * Donald Duck - This lovable Disney cartoon character also wore a bow tie, along with one of his best Disney buds, Mickey Mouse.

    Radio Commercial Day

In 1922 the first radio commercial ever was broadcast by Queensboro Realty. It lasted 10 entire minutes and cost a mere $100. Even though radio commercials are now much shorter, they're by no means cheaper. In 2011, more than $17 billion was spent on radio advertising in the U.S. alone.

Although we are often prone to switching channels when a commercial comes on, there are some that are entertaining. You can celebrate "Radio Commercial Day" and listen to some of the funniest ones here.

    National Cherry Turnover Day

Cherry turnovers are served extensively as an American dessert, but they are enjoyed widely as a breakfast item as well. Not to be confused with a popover, which is considered to be a quick bread rather than a pastry, turnovers are light, airy, and filled with some luscious goodness from cherries to cream cheese to nuts.

Today is "National Cherry Turnover Day," and there's no better way to celebrate than by enjoying one of these tasty temptations. You can either pick some up at your local bakery, or try your hand at making your own. Here is a great cherry turnover recipe from Yahoo! Shine:

    Dream Day

On Aug. 28, 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. Considered to be one of the greatest political speeches of all time, Dr. King inspired peace and hope in the hearts of civil rights activists around the globe.

Today is "Dream Day" in commemoration of that historic speech. You can celebrate by reading the words of this awesome document and vowing to live your life free of hatred and prejudice.
