Some of the top furniture designers, suppliers, manufacturers and importers will be exhibiting at the Australian International Furniture Fair (AIFF) in 2012. The trade show features the latest trends in furniture design, from outdoor wicker furniture to convertible lounges, contemporary dining suites and commercial furnishings. More than 6,600 visitors and in excess of 250 exhibitors were at AIFF and the co-located DECORATION + DESIGN fair in 2011. Sydney Design, held annually in July, is another event that highlights the best of Australian design -- from furniture to fashion.

60th Perth International Arts Festival

The Perth International Arts Festival is the longest-running multi-arts festival in the southern hemisphere. While attendance is lower than at NSW's iconic Sydney Festival, the Perth International Arts Festival offers a more varied program. The three-week-long festival features more than 1100 performances and boasts a diverse program of art, music, theater, dance, literature and film. Since 1953, the festival has welcomed some of the world’s greatest living artists and entertained more than 800,000 people. The opening of the festival will be a visual spectacular called "Place des Anges" by internationally renowned French company Les Studios de Cirque.

34th Sydney Mardi Gras

Sydney's annual Mardi Gras is not the largest annual gay pride festival in the world in terms of participants but it rivals gay and lesbian pride events in New York City, Amsterdam, San Francisco and Sao Paulo for the title of "best gay event in the world." Sydney's world-famous Mardi Gras Parade is the highlight of the two-week long festivities. In total there are more than 60 different events to attend including the Harbour party, Fair Day and one of the world's most celebrated dance parties, the Mardi Gras Party.

20th Tropfest

Tropfest is the world's largest short film festival. It offers young filmmakers a unique opportunity to showcase their works to a huge audience. The festival is open to anyone who wishes to enter and usually amasses around 700 entries each year. Tropfest is a free event held annually in Sydney. It is also broadcast live to venues in Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart and Perth, attracting a national audience of around 1 million people. Since starting in Sydney, Tropfest has expanded to include international events in places such as London, New York and Toronto. For an additional fix of Australian cinema, the Melbourne International Film Festival is held annually in July.

Heralded as Australia’s largest multi-arts festival, the Adelaide Festival regularly attracts in excess of 650,000 attendees. 2012 marks the festival’s change from a biennial to an annual event. This year the Adelaide Festival will feature close to 1000 local and international artists and 68 events spanning music, opera, cabaret, literature, dance, visual arts, forums and new media. The Adelaide International (March 1 - April 5), Artists Week (March 2-5) and the Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art (March 3 - April 29) run concurrently to the Adelaide Festival. The Adelaide Fringe festival will run February 24 - March 18 and the 20th WOMADelaide music festival will run March 9-12.

57th Moomba Festival

During Australia's Labour Day long weekend, people in Melbourne take part in the varied sporting, arts and music activities that form part of the annual Moomba Festival. The free festival is one of Melbourne's longest-running events and attracts more than 700,000 visitors. The Moomba Festival includes the Birdman Rally where participants dress up and use homemade flying machines in an attempt to fly or flap the furthest and the Moomba Parade which travels through the heart of the city. This year’s lineup includes The Panics, Josh Pyke, Tex Perkins and the Bamboos.
