Australia agenda: L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, Moomba Festival

Australia’s top designers will be showing off their creations during the weeklong L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. Meanwhile participants in Melbourne’s Moomba Festival’s Birdman Rally will be dressing up their homemade flying machines for a different kind of parade.

The L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival, LMFF for short, is unique in that it is public friendly -- the majority of the festival's fashion shows and events are open to the public and many of them are free to attend. The event features fashion from noted Australian brands Lisa Ho, Sass & Bide, Alex Perry and Scanlan & Theodore plus collections from up-and-coming Australian designers. The LMFF might be the most popular fashion festival with the local public, but Sydney's Fashion Week Australia (April 30 - May 4) is Australia's most globally-followed fashion event.

57th Moomba Festival

During Australia's Labour Day long weekend, people in Melbourne take part in the varied sporting, arts and music activities that form part of the annual Moomba Festival. The free festival is one of Melbourne's longest-running events and attracts approximately 1 million visitors. The Moomba Festival includes the Birdman Rally where participants dress up and use homemade flying machines in an attempt to fly or flap the furthest and the Moomba Parade which travels through the heart of the city. This year’s lineup includes The Panics, Josh Pyke, Tex Perkins and the Bamboos.

26th Melbourne International Comedy Festival

Alongside the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (August 3-27) and Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival (July 12-29), the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is one of the three largest comedy festivals in the world. The event regularly attracts crowds of more than 500,000 spectators who come to see free and paid events from the festival's vivid program of stand-up comedy, cabaret, theater, street performance, film, television, radio and visual arts. The Sydney Comedy Festival will take place a few weeks later (April 24-May 12).

91st Archibald, Wynne & Sulman Prizes

The Archibald Prize is one of Australia's oldest and most prestigious art awards. Since its inception in 1921 the prize has been awarded to some of Australia's most important artists, including George Lambert, William Dobell and Brett Whiteley. Each year the Art Gallery of NSW holds an exhibition to showcase Archibald Prize entries. The Art Gallery of NSW also displays landscape paintings in oil or watercolor and figure sculptures submitted for the Wynne Prize plus genre paintings, subject paintings and mural projects in the running to win the Sir John Sulman Prize.

The Bluesfest Blues and Roots Music festival is one of Australia's biggest annual music events next to the Big Day out and Womadelaide. The festival attracts around 17,500 visitors each day. In 2012 the five-day festival will feature famous musicians such as Cold Chisel, John Fogerty, Crosby Stills & Nash, the John Butler Trio and Earth Wind & Fire. Bluesfest has been shortlisted as one of the top five festivals in the world alongside Glastonbury and the Montreux Jazz Festival.

21st Targa Tasmania rally

Unlike the majority of rallies, the public is invited to the Targa Tasmania to watch the almost 400 sports cars, Grand Touring Cars and sporting automobiles from the 1900s to the present race around Tasmania's roads. More than 200,000 spectators turn out to watch the Targa Tasmania each year, bringing an estimated $10 million dollars into the Tasmanian economy. In 2012 the course has been elongated by 70 kilometers in a bid to “keep the event fresh to maintain its appeal to competitors."

Anzac Day

Anzac Day is a national holiday in Australia and traditionally marked with dawn services that pay tribute to the fallen soldiers and Anzac Day parades.
