  • Dogs 'Hang 10' at Surfing Competition

(REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson)The waters off California's Huntington Beach were host to an unusual sight over the weekend - surfers on all fours paddling through the choppy waters.

They weren't your typical surfers clinging to stay on top their boards, however, but surfers using all four legs because, well, they're dogs.

They were taking part in the Surf City Surf Dog contest, held annually in the well-known surfing mecca to raise money for animal charities.

The event's organizers tried to set a new Guinness World Record this year by getting 20 dogs to ride the same wave for five seconds, but the waves were too choppy.

(REUTERS/Lucy Nicholson)"I can't surf, and here are these dogs hanging 10, or hanging 20. It's amazing. We get to see a lot of cool stuff, and this is something that is totally new," Mike Janela, the Guinness judge on hand for the attempt told the Orange County Register before the dogs' first try. "Hopefully, they are successful - but even if they aren't, it's a great

  • Father, Son Rescued Off Calif. Coast

A father and son were rescued off California's central coast after an engine failure plunged their seaplane into the cold, choppy waters.

The pair, en route from Santa Barbara to Canada on an annual vacation trip, were saved thanks to a piece of technology they brought aboard their seaplane and the quick-thinking of two rescue pilots.

Lt. Chris Courtney and Lt. Marshall Burtt, both officers with the Coast Guard Air Station in San Francisco, had already completed two rescues Sunday when a distress call came through around 3 p.m. of a plane in trouble south of Big Sur.

When the Coast Guard helicopter piloted by Courtney, the aircraft commander, and Burtt, the co-pilot, arrived on the scene less than an hour later, they found the plane about one mile offshore and northwest of Morro Bay, in San Louis Obispo County.

"When we got on the scene they [the father and son]had their propeller still going, trying to stabilize the aircraft as best they could," Burtt told ABCNews.com.

  • Mom's Back to School 'Happy Dance' Goes Viral

Nobody loves the start of a new school year more than parents, right?

It's a theory made famous by companies like Target and Staples, which sell the season as "the most wonderful time of the year" in commercials that show parents dancing down store aisles that are stocked with school supplies and clothing.

For one Massachusetts mom, she's not just dancing in the aisles, she's dancing in the streets.

For the past four years, Tracy Moutafis, of Framingham, Mass., has seen her two children, George, 11, and Angelo, 9, off to school by doing a "happy dance" in the middle of the street as soon as they board the big yellow school bus.

Moutafis's annual dance to "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang has made her a celebrity in her neighborhood and now a star online too. She records her celebratory dance each year, and when this year's dance was posted to YouTube, it quickly went viral.

"[It was] the first day of school, and I said,' I'm going to do something fun,'" Moutafis said today

The early morning pancakes came with a breakfast surprise in a Mission Valley, Calif., IHOP recently when a deer crashed through the window and capered in a panic around the restaurant.

The deer came through the front window about 7 a.m. Monday and began to run through the restaurant, according to local ABC affiliate KGTV.

The store's surveillance camera captured the chaos that ensued as the deer stumbling and confused, tried to find an exit. It first headed toward the kitchen, turned and scampered towards another window but was baffled by the blinds.

After nearly five minutes inside, the deer finally made its way towards an emergency exit the restaurant's manager had propped open and was gone.

Beyond a likely case of shock, no patrons or employees were injured in the incident.

  • Meet Mini, the Dog As Small As Your iPhone

(Jon Beal/BNPS)Queen Elizabeth may have her Corgis, but the puppy stealing hearts and breaking records in Britain is a Yorkshire terrier chihuahua mix no bigger than an iPhone.

The dog, appropriately named Mini, weighed just 1.3 oz at birth; Mini's believed to be Britain's smallest dog, according to the Daily Mail.

Mini was born one week ago in a litter of seven puppies who all easily tripled her in size. The pint-size pooch has been nursed by hand by her owner, 29-year-old Emma Williams, every two hours since she was born, in addition to being fed by her mom.

The result? Mini now weighs 1.9 oz, big enough to rejoin her siblings but still nowhere near the 4.5 oz weight typical of puppies her age and breed, the Daily Mail reports.

"Mini was the second puppy to be born so at first I thought she was a normal size and the other was big and chunky," Williams, from Sandbanks, Dorset, England told the paper. "But as the others came out it became
