  • Christian Bale Visits Aurora, Colo., Shooting Victims

    Christian Bale, who plays the hero, Batman, in "The Dark Knight Rises," today visited victims of a massacre that occurred early Friday at a screening of the film, allegedly by a man who fashioned himself as Batman's comic book arch-enemy, the Joker.

    Bale spent about two-and-a-half hours at the Medical Center of Aurora, Bill Voloch, the interim president of the facility, told the Denver Post, adding that he met with five people being treated there and two others brought in from another hospital.

    "It was good for the patients," Voloch told the Post. "We hope it was therapeutic for them, and all the staff really appreciated him coming."

    Petitions asking the actor to visit Aurora were posted on following Friday's shooting.

  • Mariah Carey to Judge 'American Idol'

    (AP Photo/Abdeljalil Bounhar, file) Mariah Carey is joining the judge's table of "American Idol."

    Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly announced the new addition to the "Idol" team at a Television Critics Association press conference today. In a statement released by Fox, Carey said, "it's going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with 'American Idol.' … I can't wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon."

    "We are proud to have one of the world's greatest-ever female singers join our show," "Idol" creator and executive producer Simon Fuller said in a statement. "Mariah defines the word 'Idol' and will inspire every singer that has the honor of performing in front of her."

    The 5-time Grammy winner isn't sidelining her recording career for the show. She's currently working on her new album and its first single, "Triumphant," set for release early next month.

  • Katie Holmes Announces First Acting Role Post Divorce

    Katie Holmes is returning to the stage. The actress has announced her first major acting role since splitting from Tom Cruise: starring in the comedy "Dead Accounts," opening on Broadway this fall.

    Holmes will play Lorna, a woman who is living with her aging parents in Cincinnati while trying to figure out her life. She also has to deal with the return of her brother, Jack, who returns to the Midwest with a load of money and without his wife.

    "Dead Accounts" comes from Pulitzer Prize finalist Theresa Rebeck. Tony Award winner Jack O'Brien has been tapped to direct. A representative for the play said Holmes' four cast members will be announced shortly.

    Holmes made her Broadway debut with a revival of Arthur Miller's "All My Sons" in 2008.

    It will be a busy fall for the 33-year-old actress - her fashion line, Holmes & Yang, will make its runway debut at New York Fashion Week in September.

  • Katie Holmes' Car Hit by a Garbage Truck, Tom Cruise Spotted With Suri

    Even sanitation workers are hot on the pursuit of Katie Holmes. A New York City garbage truck ran into a Mercedes carrying Holmes and her daughter Suri Monday night, denting the car and making Suri cry, according to People magazine.

    New York City police confirmed no one was injured in the accident that happened outside the Chelsea Piers sports club. A police report was filed when Holmes and her daughter arrived home.

    Monday’s accident was the second time the pair’s car has been hit in four days. Last Friday, a paparazzi car hit their vehicle as they arrived at their Chelsea apartment after a visit to the FAO Schwarz toy store.

    Nevertheless, Holmes has been anything but a shut-in since filing for divorce from Tom Cruise June 28, taking Suri around Manhattan for trips to Central Park, Whole Foods, ice cream shops, and a pet store, where the 6-year-old threw a tantrum over the weekend.

  • Steven Tyler Leaves 'American Idol'

    (AP Photo/Katy Winn, file)After two seasons on "American Idol," Steven Tyler is saying sayonara. Fox put out a statement confirming his decision to depart the show, and the Aerosmith frontman summed up his decision in typical Tyler-speak.

    "After some long…hard…thoughts…I've decided it's time for me to let go of my mistress 'American Idol' before she boils my rabbit," he said. "I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I'm back - but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I've got two fists in the air and I'm kicking the door open with my band."

    "On Nov. 6," he added, "we are unleashing our new album, " Music from Another Dimension" on the Earth, Moon, Mars, and way beyond the stars…'Idol' was over-the-top fun, and I loved every minute of it."

  • Usher's Stepson's Accident Still Under Investigation

    The investigation continues into the Jet Ski accident that reportedly left Usher's 11-year-old stepson, Kyle Glover, brain dead.

    Sgt. Mike Burgamy of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources told today that the accident is still under investigation, and that the lead investigators have yet to talk with the district attorney's office. Glover's prognosis will determine how they proceed.

    "I don't know what's going to happen with the 11-year-old," Burgamy said. "We're going to have to see what his condition is going to be before we present findings of the case."

    Jeffrey S. Hubbard, 38, a friend of Usher, a seven-time Grammy winner, and his ex-wife, Tameka Foster, is at the center of the investigation. "He was interviewed, and it's possible he may be reinterviewed," Burgamy said. Attempts by to reach Hubbard were not successful.

  • Famed Bridal Designer Vera Wang Separates From Husband

    Vera Wang, the fashion designer who has all but become the face of American weddings, is separating from her husband, Arthur Becker.

    "Vera Wang and Arthur Becker have mutually and amicably agreed to separate," Wang's publicist said in a statement to "They remain devoted parents to their two daughters."

    Wang, 63, and Becker have been married for 23 years. According to Women's Wear Daily, Becker advised Wang as her business grew from a Manhattan bridal shop into a global, multimillion-dollar brand. They have two daughters, Cecilia and Josephine.

    Wang has outfitted scores of celebrities for their weddings, including Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, and Chelsea Clinton.

  • Katie Holmes Celebrates Independence Day Sans Tom Cruise

    "I'm alright," Holmes told the New York Daily News as she pushed a shopping cart carrying Suri through the Whole Foods Market in Chelsea. A security guard accompanied the pair.

    Meanwhile, a new interview with Holmes reveals that she may have been plotting her divorce months before filing legal papers on June 28. In late May, she was asked about Cruise for an Elle magazine interview to be released July 17.

    "He has been Tom Cruise for 30 years, I know who I am and where I am and where I want to go, so I want to focus on that," she said, adding that being married to the movie star, who was just named among the world's highest-earning actors by Forbes, didn't make her career any easier.

    "If anything, you work a little bit harder when you're in such visible circumstances," she said.

  • Katie Holmes Distances Herself From Tom Cruise

    Credit: Splash NewsAs Tom Cruise marks his 50th birthday today, Katie Holmes is further distancing herself from her soon-to-be ex-husband.

    A source familiar with Holmes' security detail confirmed to ABC News that Holmes has fired the security team Cruise employed for her for years. Another source told ABC News that one of the main reasons she filed for divorce was Cruise's loyalty to Scientology.

    Representatives for Cruise and Holmes have thus far declined to comment on whether Scientology played a part in their split.

    Meanwhile, according to Us Weekly, Cruise left Iceland last night, where he was filming the movie "Oblivion," to head back to California.

    Holmes is currently in New York, where she filmed an appearance on "Project Runway: All Stars" Monday and filed for divorce Thursday. Photographers captured her wearing a grim smile as she walked through the city. Notably absent: her wedding ring.

  • Anderson Cooper Reveals He's Gay

    The 45-year-old CNN anchor came out in an email to the Daily Beast's Andrew Sullivan that was published on Sullivan's blog this morning. Cooper was responding to an Entertainment Weekly article about how gay public figures are increasingly coming out in more restrained ways than in the past.

    "The fact is, I'm gay, always have been, always will be, and I couldn't be any more happy, comfortable with myself, and proud," Cooper writes.

    Cooper explains that he kept his sexuality private "for professional reasons" but had "begun to consider whether the unintended outcomes of maintaining my privacy outweigh personal and professional principle." Instances of gay bullying made him "believe there is value in making clear where I stand."
