Authorities Find Body Believed to Be Mt. Rainier Shooting Suspect

The man suspected of killing a ranger at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington State is believed to have been found dead, according to police.

Authorities located a body face-down in the snow without any identification, but believe it to be Benjamin Colton Barnes, 24, the sole suspect in Sunday's shooting, according to a Twitter posting from Washington State Patrol spokesman Guy Gill.

Barnes was being tracked by ground and aerial search crews for the shooting death of 34-year-old ranger Margaret Anderson, who tried to block his path when Barnes sped past a checkpoint in the park Sunday morning. Barnes fired shots at Anderson and another ranger before fleeing into the park's wilderness. The other ranger was not injured.

Shortly before the discovery of the body, police said they had been honing in on Barnes' location by following his footprints in chest-deep snow. Authorities said he had some survival training and appeared to be moving in and out of river beds to avoid being followed. Police said they did not know whether he had enough supplies to continue outpacing them.

More than 100 agents from the National Park Service, state police, FBI, and local sheriff's departments had descended on the park to help the search efforts. Authorities had gathered 125 campers that were in the park Sunday into a visitors center, where they were held under police watch overnight. The visitors were evacuated in the dark early this morning.

Three small groups of hikers who were making an ascent of the mountain remained in the park.

Barnes is a military veteran who has a history of criminal violence, including threatening the mother of his child with guns during a bitter custody battle, according to court documents obtained by ABC News.

Anderson was a married mother of two daughters, ages 2 and 4.

Police had been searching the snowy park since early Sunday, using infrared radar, aircraft and ground units to try and track the suspect. Lee Taylor, a spokeswoman for the park, said 111 law enforcement officers from the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Washington State Patrol, FBI, and Pierce and Louis counties are assisting in the search.

"Obviously something was wrong with him" He had a criminal record, but still was proud to have his guns, including apparently an assault rifle. Gabby Giffords and the other 6, this woman..., when will the man of the street realize that it's just way too easy to buy guns in this country?

However, while I am sure his wife is sorry for what he did, I would bet that she is relieved to be free of the danger he posed to her and their child.

As I posted on the other article, I worked with Margaret (not at Rainiere) and I can't even describe how wonderful of a person she was. Strong family values, modest, quiet, always smiling and someone everyone liked. I can have peace that she died doing what she loved. Eric, I hope you can find peace as well...

My thoughts are with the victims' family and her children, especially. I wish I knew what made people believe that their lives matter more than anothers...

Strangely for me, I also hope the killer's family can find some solace in the knowledge that their loved one's life is ended, so he cannot harm anyone else...

My heart goes out to both families...

Folks, PTSD is serious and should not be taken lightly as are some of the topics discussed. Strange how those "Hometown Heroes" who deserve so much respect for their sacrifices slowly are forgotten when they become "VETERANS" It is a gorilla on the backs of many, many past and present men and women who were drafted and who joined voluntarily. How many would have served had they known of the consequences of PTSD and the nation's indifference to their plight once their service had ended? Put that on a recruiting poster! In Nam we had a saying that summed up most of what we were going through "It don't mean nothing" Do not let it get you down. You will be heading back to the world and it will all be gravy from then on. But Nam had a gift that keeps on giving PTSD. Seems the younger vets have been given the same gifts. Pray for him as you would the young women, both are causalities of war..

I was in the military for 6 years, believe it or not the military recruits losers too. Just because someone was in the military does not make the super human, or saints. 96% of them are great people the rest are total losers and mentally ill cast outs from all over our nation. We had a guy in our unit go around Germany hitting women in the head with a hammer until he killed them then had sex with they're dead body's! Another guy cut off his roommates head and put it in a plastic sack for safe keeping. Nut Bags are every where in our society, the armed forces, the white house, the senate. Just because someone can do they're job and coexist with the rest of us, this means they are not nut's? How many true nut cases never cross that line, but work with us on a daily schedule until they snap and the in the aftermath everyone says well he was kinda weird and kept to himself mostly?

If you suddenly get the urge to take your shirt off and take a picture of yourself holding guns and looking menacing.... you should probably surrender your guns and seek some medical treatment.

Tragic that he served his country in a war zone, yet lost his life in America. Too bad he and others cannot get the help they desperately need...yet probably resist.

It is such a sad thing for her and her children. As for the firearm talk... She wasn't armed. think about that. Maybe he'd be the one shot dead.

Don't any of you wonder what is happening with so many of our vets?
It is reported that 18 vets a day commit suicide, some after taking the life of someone else.
Does this not give anyone pause? Why is happening with these vets, that they return home for the war front filled with such violence and rage?
Has the horror and carnage of war pushed them over the edge? Are they not getting the time of counseling they need? Are the not getting all the help they need to adjust to civilian life again?
In no way am I defending what this man did. I'm concerned in why this is happening so much to those who wear our uniform. We it to all who wear the uniform of this country, to find out why this is happening, and we need to get these vets all the help they need.

He had " has a history of criminal violence". That makes him not legally eligible to own, possess or purchase a gun. So who is at fault for not assuring that any guns he may have had access to were removed from him? Where did he get the guns he had? When guns are taken from the responsible and legally qualified, only the criminals and crazies will have guns. It is happening in most of the British Empire nations. There are plenty of guns in the Third World, mostly military weapons that are already forbidden to American citizens, and those places use the weapons to enslave the majority of their populations.
