Authorities enter Rhode Island speaker's office

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Authorities carrying an evidence bag and empty cardboard boxes have entered the Statehouse office of Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox.

The U.S. attorney's office confirms the FBI, IRS, state police and the U.S. attorney's office are engaged in a law enforcement action at the Statehouse. He would not give specifics.

Three state police officers stood outside the closed door to Fox's office on Friday morning.

Fox's spokesman, Larry Berman, says state police had asked everyone to leave the office.

U.S. attorney's office spokesman Jim Martin wouldn't comment when asked whether the Democratic House speaker was being investigated. He said two federal search warrants had been executed, but he wouldn't say whether they were connected to Fox.

Two men who answered the door at Fox's house said he wasn't available to speak to a reporter.
