Avianca jet makes emergency landing in Brazil

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — An Avianca Airlines passenger jet has made an emergency landing at the airport in Brazil's capital city.

Brazil's Air Force says that none of the 49 passengers and crew aboard the jet were injured when the airliner made the emergency landing Friday evening.

The plane had taken off from Petrolina, a town in northeastern Brazil, with Brasilia as its destination. The Air Force says that the front landing gear didn't lower as the jet made its approach for landing in Brasilia.

The pilot safely landed the airliner on its rear wheels. After several hundred meters, the nose touched to the ground and the jet slid to a halt.

After hours calls to Avianca's press office in Brazil weren't returned.
