    Avid Collector Seeks 1968 Jimi Hendrix/The Doors Singer Bowl Flushing Meadows Concert Poster

    Andrew Hawley, avid buyer of original 1950s and 1960s vintage concert posters, announces his search for the concert poster from The Singer Bowl in Flushing Meadows New York featuring The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, and Janis Joplin. The concert was held in August, 1968 in Queens, New York. The Doors performed a tense concert that was marred by violence. In the 1970s, the Singer Bowl was renovated to host the U.S. Tennis Open.

    Andrew Hawley, from Vintage Rock Posters, is seeking an original August 1968 concert poster from The Singer Bowl in Flushing Meadows, New York featuring The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Who, and Janis Joplin. According to Hawley, “This poster is unique because it advertises a series of concerts that took place at Flushing Meadows during August, 1968. The concert promoters were Gary Kurfirst and Shelly Finkel. Finkel was a successful boxer promoter who managed boxing legends Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson. The Singer Bowl concert series started on August 2, 1968 with Jim Morrison and the Doors teaming up with The Who and Kangaroo. It was a hot muggy night and the audience was restless. After The Who and Kangaroo's performances, The Doors took the stage. The concert was tense. Morrison performed surrounded with heavy set bouncers. The Doors concluded their set with “The End” a song from their debut album and were escorted off the stage as bedlam broke out in the crowd. Later that summer, The Jimi Hendrix Experience played with Big Brother and The Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin. In the early 1970s, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) was looking for new venue to host it tennis tournament. The old, long rectangular stadium was heavily renovated and divided into two adjacent stadiums, becoming Louis Armstrong Stadium for the U.S. Tennis Open.”

    Hawley continues, “The poster for the show is your standard 14x22 inch boxing style poster featuring artists renditions of Morrison, The Jimi Hendrix Experience as well as Big Brother. The poster was printed locally by Murray Poster Printing out of New York. Hawley is willing to pay $5,000 cash for this concert poster and any condition is accepted.
