Awkwardness Ahead If Jack Dorsey Returns to Twitter

By now, Business Insider, The New York Times and TechCrunch are all confirming that Twitter creator/co-founder Jack Dorsey (pictured above) is in talks with Twitter's board to lead a product development role at the company. Nicholas Carlson, who broke the story, says the CEO position is on the table, but the Times and TechCrunch say it's more likely that Dorsey will maintain his position as CEO of Square, a mobile credit card payment startup, while pitching in at Twitter.

Twitter would neither confirm nor deny the reports, saying "Twitter is lucky to have the involvement of its founders. As we said last fall, we're fortunate that our chairman, Jack Dorsey, has been able to get even more engaged in the company. His assistance has and will continue to be invaluable."

If Dorsey were to return to Twitter it wouldn't be without its awkward moments. Though he conceived the idea for the microblogging service, he was ousted as CEO in 2008--a move he told Vanity Fair "was like being punched in the stomach.” Dorsey would also have to work closely with Twitter's other former CEO Evan Williams who he's had a rocky relationship with. As Twitter board member Fred Wilson said this month, "Ev and Jack are a little like John and Paul. They made great music together for a while, but then they both kind of got ambitious about things and didn’t see eye to eye anymore.”
