The actress replaces Juliette Binoche, who was forced to step down from the project due to a scheduling conflict, Variety reports.
For his directing debut, Brady Corbet -- the actor seen in films by Lars Von Trier and Michael Haneke -- is assembling a prestigious cast. The latest recruit is Bérénice Béjo, who won a César award for her role in "The Artist" and was honored in Cannes for her performance in the 2013 film "The Past."
The French actress will share the screen with Robert Pattinson, whose breakthrough came via the "Twilight" films and who more recently starred in David Cronenberg's "Maps to the Stars," and with veteran actor Tim Roth.
Co-written by Brady Corbet and Mona Fastvold, "The Childhood of the Leader" will depict the childhood of a political ruler who comes to power after World War I. Bérenice Béjo will play a matriarch, according to Variety.
Production is slated to begin in November in Budapest.
