Baby Girl Fatally Shot in Crib by Gang-Related Gunfire From Outside Her Compton Home: Police

Man Charged in Fatal Shooting of 1-Year-Old Los Angeles Girl

A baby girl was fatally shot in the head while lying in her crib Tuesday evening as suspected gang-related gunfire erupted outside her Compton, California, home, police say.

The victim, Autumn Johnson, had just turned 1-year-old the week before she was killed, PEOPLE confirms.

Los Angeles police were called to the girl's home at around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, arriving ahead of paramedics.

Because of the life-threatening nature of Autumn's wounds, police "decided to take the child and drove her to a local hospital in their patrol car," reads a statement from investigators.

Despite the officers' best efforts, doctors were unable to revive Autumn, pronouncing her dead a short while later.

According to a statement from police, witnesses described seeing two suspects firing rounds into the girl's home. No one else was injured by the bullets.

The shooters then fled the neighborhood in a dark four-door sedan, the statement reads.
