Bachmann: Democrats using 'scare tactics' on debt

WASHINGTON (AP) — Newly declared Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is accusing the Obama administration of using "scare tactics" to pressure Congress into a deal allowing an increase in the government's borrowing authority.

Bachmann tells CBS's "The Early Show" she can't vote for increasing the debt limit unless it is accompanied by "substantial cuts" in spending.

Asked about a possible default when the current borrowing authority expires Aug. 2, the Minnesota Republican says that isn't a risk because "the interest on the debt could easily be paid."

Bachmann says President Barack Obama once acknowledged he wouldn't deserve a second term if he couldn't turn the economy around by his third year in office. She says his stimulus program was a bust because it failed to create 4 million new jobs, as promised.

how about we start with the salaries in congress honey, would that work for you?
      • Steven 10 mths ago
No problem. Cut the salaries in Congress. Then can we do something that would actually have an impact on the bottom line?
      • A Yahoo! User 10 mths ago
What do you feel would be a fair salary for a Congressman? Do you really feel they should make considerably less than private sector jobs with that much responsibility? It makes for a great talking point, but really, it is not what has put this country in debt. Wake up!

Her name isn't honey! And, yes for the minimal hours they are actually in congress - cut the salaries - put them on a time clock like the rest of us!

I'm Canadian and when I read these comments one thing stands out. Everyone is unhappy either with the Republicans or Democrats, both of whom have a fair share of the blame for the situation that your country is in at the moment. And yet you only see the answer as either a Democrat or a Republican. This is a case of doing the same thing and expecting different results. Perhaps a better solution would be to give these tired old parties a rest and do what we do in Canada when the need arises. Establish a new party that actually shares your beliefs and that isn't already beholden to the forces that appear to prevent either of the existing ones from acting in the middle-class American's best interests. I don't believe that the holy Founding Fathers ruled out the establishment of more than two parties, it just seems to have developed without an understanding of the diwnside of only two views of the world, two views that from a Canadian's perspective aren't really all that far apart.

We did. It's called "The Tea Party".

Insanity is when you try the same thing over and over, expecting different results.

If those honest politicians would have paid back our Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid funds, instead of defaulting on them! The funds would not be short of money! So all you folks spewing worthless rhetoric about this subject try at least to get your politico facts straight! And, remember Reading is Fundamental and leads to a True Understanding of the True Facts!

glad someone else posts this stuff too. we fixed Social Security in 1983 and it was doing so very well that the excess was put into the general fund. That was when our illustrious politicians decided let's build yet another useless thing and spend money for votes. According to some these vouchers amount to about 4 trillion owed to social security trust fund. With that alone still in the pot Social Security is fixed.

But $7.58T of the $11.17 Trillion National Debt is also $7.58T of $12.8 Trillion borrowed from Social Security and Medicare.

The above came from some hype place and is not accurate at all exp the debt has increased since then. However that is where a lot of bad numbers come from. The actual number is in the 4 trillion range.
      • Mike 10 mths ago
Hmmm, the two honest politicians don't have enough votes to do anything.

We don't need scare tactics from any part of the government, WE NEED THE TRUTH !

But for 10 years that has been the m.o. of the repubs. Remember terrorism terrorism everytime Bush wasn't going to get his way." If " Obama is trying that method at least he's trying to help the people and not Corporate America.

Many of us here also are fed up with the polarization. it will never resolve anything.

You have Rush to thank for that.

If we agree with the Dems, we are in deep doo doo. I don't like either party but the Dems are more financially irresponsible than the Repubs.

I would love to see a simple breakdown of what each side is asking for and where the spending is going. I agree you should not spend money you do not have or at least a plan to get, but where is the analysis? All I see is bickering in the press throwing around number so astronomical that they are incomprehensible, with no back up - a spreadsheet, anything. The party ideologs will always line up behind their party, but the rest of us in the middle would like to see a comparative analysis - maybe your both wrong and there needs to be a little give an take.

On June 28, 2011 in an interview with Fox News Channel, Bachmann proudly stated that John Wayne, was from Waterloo, Iowa just like her and “That’s the kind of spirit I have, too,” Bachmann said.

Only John Wayne isn’t from Waterloo, he was born in Winterset, Iowa, more than 100 miles to the south.

John Wayne Gacy, the mass murderer in Chicago who was convicted of killing more than 30 young men in the 1970s and stashing their bodies in a crawlspace in his house was from Waterloo.

Bachmann was confronted by CBS’ Bob Schieffer on “Face the Nation” Sunday about the UNTRUTHS of her attacks on President Obama.

Schieffer noted how PolitiFact, a fact-checking website that was awarded a Pulitzer Prize, analyzed 23 of Bachmann’s statements, finding just one to be “completely true.” 7 of which were outright lies.

Schieffer then asked Bachmann “Do you feel you have misled people?”
Her response “No, I haven't misled people at all”.

Gosh and it wasn't that long ago that America already had a balanced budget AND a budget surplus to start paying all that debt the Republicans incurred yet are now claiming they're so committed to paying while completely ignoring that they were the ones that squandered all the money WE gave them to do just that in the first place.

Can you wingnuts explain how we now make up all the trillions in lost revenue the Bu$h/GOP tax cuts for the ultra rich has, is, and will cost us???

Can you wingnuts explain how we now pay for all those billions in corporate welfare we hand out every year???

Can you wingnuts explain how we make up all those trillions in lost revenue where TWO-THIRDS of all multi-national conglomerates pay ZERO taxes for outsourcing jobs and yet hiding profits in tax haven countries to still receive all that corporate welfare???

Can you wingnuts explain how now we pay for all the money Bu$h gave the banks for taking us to the brink of complete economic collapse???

Can you wingnuts explain how now we pay for your 10-year nation-building project that has cost us trillions yet based on a lie of WMD's???? btw where's that oil you promised???

Can you wingnuts explain how we now pay for keeping the military complex's budget several times larger than any other in the world???

The GOP likes to claim we have the highest tax rates in the world yet always fails to mention that we also have the LOWEST EFFECTIVE tax rate in the world when it comes to the ultra rich and multi-national conglomerates.

ALL these trillions being lost to the rich and corporate welfare are being "redistributed" onto the middle-class and American small businesses to make up the difference yet the GOP want it to continue when they know WE CAN'T DO IT ANYMORE!!!!

bin Laden may be dead but over here the Gadhafi Oligarchy Party is committing middle-class genocide and the wingnut buffoons just keep voting for them including the few bought-off DINOs. The GOP Kochsucking mafia boss Norquist must be so proud.

Have you watched the latest "60 minutes".
In America many kids go to school, to bed with empty stomach. They even described their feelings: can't sleep, when fallen asleep then waken up by hunger. Many families have to choose between food or electricity...

Really, does anyone take this person seriously other than the religous fanatics in this country. Notice, I didn't say Christians!
    • Eric1  •  10 mths ago
'DEMOCRATS are using scare tactics?' Are you KIDDING me??? That is ALL I have heard from the GOP for the past FIFTEEN YEARS, and why I QUIT the Republican Party TEN YEARS AGO!!!

The repubs are against and fight anything Obama trys to make work. There has been several things the repubs have submitted that when Obama has said was a good idea, they refused to vote to approve what they had submitted. The repubs are killing America just to make Obama look bad.

10 years of cuts ...so where are the jobs ...lots of jobs ,just not in america
    • Tony  •  10 mths ago
And using terms like "death panels" and "Don't kill Grandma" during the health care reform debate weren't considered "scare tactics"?? What a hyprocrite!
    • Andrew  •  10 mths ago
Cut spending. When a person gets broke the first thing to do is cut spending.
    • John  •  10 mths ago
Wow, where does Andy get his 'facts'? During Bush's terms we lost jobs. When he was about to leave office the housing bubble had already burst and the economy was sinking fast, about to implode. The unemployment rate was about to skyrocket and the DOW was about to crash...all of this was well under way.

If you read the financial press, listen to any of the financial news networks, visit and read any of the financial web sites, one can conclude that the US defaulting on its debt obligations would result in financail disaster for the US and world economies. Look at what the prospect of a Greek default is doing to markets. Think what the result would be if the government of the world's largest ecomony defaulted on its debt. Of course the Wing Nuts in the GOP could care less about the good of the Nation. All they want is for Obama to fail so they can get back into office and continue the destruction of the Nation that started under Reagan and hastened along by Bush 2.
