Bachmann says vaccine retardation claim not hers

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said Monday she was not arguing that a vaccine intended to prevent cervical cancer caused mental retardation when she repeated the scientifically unfounded claim last week.

The Minnesota congresswoman said she was relaying what a distraught woman told her after a GOP presidential debate in Florida in which Bachmann criticized rival Rick Perry for ordering the vaccine in Texas.

"All I was doing is relaying what a woman had said," Bachmann told The Associated Press after touring a manufacturer in Waterloo. "I relayed what she said. I wasn't attesting to her accuracy. I wasn't attesting to anything."

During the debate, Bachmann accused Perry, the governor of Texas, of abusing his authority by signing a 2007 executive order requiring school-age girls to be vaccinated against human papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted disease that can cause cancer. After the debate, she described an encounter with a woman she says approached her.

"There's a woman who came up crying to me tonight after the debate. She said her daughter was given that vaccine," Bachmann said on Fox News. "She told me her daughter suffered mental retardation as a result. There are very dangerous consequences."

Perry said he erred by not seeking legislative approval but stood by the aim of preventing cancer. Campaigning in Iowa last week, he said Bachmann's comment after the debate was unwise "when she had no scientific backing, to say the very least."

Bachmann has criticized Perry in recent weeks, in hopes of reviving her struggling presidential bid. His entry into the race in mid-August halted her ascent after she had won the Iowa Straw Poll, an important test vote. The state's presidential caucuses begin the nominating process.

In Sheffield on Monday, Bachmann criticized Perry's opposition to building a fence on the U.S.-Mexican border and his support for in-state tuition benefits for children of illegal immigrants.

"I do not believe that American taxpayers should be subsidizing benefits for people who are in this country illegally or for their children," she said.

Bachmann was visiting manufacturing plants in northern Iowa to emphasize the issue of jobs. She found herself answering questions from reporters about comments by her former campaign manager, Ed Rollins. Rollins said Monday that Bachmann had little capacity to compete beyond Iowa, compared to Perry and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, if she did not do well in the state's caucuses.

"She doesn't have the ability or resources to go beyond Iowa at this point in time, where Perry and Romney, with lots of money, can go into South Carolina, Arizona, Florida and other places," Rollins told MSNBC.

Bachmann, who was scheduled to campaign Tuesday in Des Moines, said she is focused on Iowa. She declined to say whether she could compete beyond Iowa should she fail to win the caucuses.

"Iowa is our top priority and we intend to win Iowa," she told the AP.

I believe I heard that 30,000,000 young ladies have taken this vaccine, and there is'nt one documented report that it causes mental retardation. Except Michele Bachman!

the vaccine isnt Michelle's excuse: her mother would have had to take it and it wasnt around then. She needs no excuse.

So if a distraught woman had told her that the vaccine turned her daughter into a mutated space alien, she'd be repeating that as well?
      • HH 8 mths ago
yes, she'd repeat it if it got her votes. and it probably would.

Good God, what a friggin' idiot! And this thing could be the next President. She makes Sarah Palin look like Madame Curie. Well, OK, that's a little bit of hyperbole. Sarah's dumb as a post, too.

How dare you disrespect posts! Shame!

If Michele Bachmann does'nt agree with the vaccine for 12 year old girls, why does she use it against Perry in the debates? All vaccines affect people in different ways, that's no reason to stop using medicine to help young ladies not get cancer. No one has proven that this medicine causes children to have mental defects. She says she's not the one who put that out there, but uses it to scare people.

Nah it just kills people, so you're right there's no reason for YOU not to take it....
"As of June 22, 2011 there have been a total 68 VAERS reports of death among those who have received Gardasil® . There were 54 reports among females, 3 were among males, and 11 were reports of unknown gender."......CDC website; go read it for yourself..

Every vaccine has a percentage of the population that ca'nt take it . It's not for men, so how did they die from it? If you think your half man, do'nt take it! I'm not trying to be dramatic when I say, 68 out of 30,000,000 is not a bad % point. I had to take pennicillin for years, one day I swell up from taking it. Had to be rushed to the hospital caused I swelled up like a balloon, I had Popeye arms. That's just the way things happen, bad Karma!
But, have you ever heard that it caused mental retardation? I never heard it brought up until M.B. brought it up in that debate against Perry.

"There's a woman who came up crying to me tonight after the debate. She said her daughter was given that vaccine," Bachmann said on Fox News. "She told me her daughter suffered mental retardation as a result. THERE ARE VERY DANGEROUS CONSEQUENCES."

She wasn't relaying what the woman said with this last line. She was making an argument that mental retardation is a "dangerous consequence" of the vaccine. Bachmann used this argument in a public debate and either she can admit she was wrong or she can stand by it. But what she can't do is put the blame on someone else for the words that came out of her mouth.

Watching that nitwit in a Bag "debate" may cause mental retardation.

You know, the sad part is that she was starting to make a valid argument about how government should respect parental rights and how Perry should have made the vaccination program opt-in, instead of opt-out. But when she started using scare tactics such as repeatedly saying "GOVERNMENT INJECTIONS" and giving "evidence" that the HPV vaccine causes mental retardation, I literally threw the remote at the TV and yelled, "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?!" She had a golden opportunity to make a logical argument about personal liberties and to make Perry look bad but blew it by attacking HPV vaccines instead. I'm dumbfounded.

"I wasn't attesting to her accuracy. I wasn't attesting to anything.", then why bother saying it?

My God, Bachmann flip flopping again, This woman is just nuts, She'll say something stupid and it goes over bad then change it around to sound better, JUST HOW STUPID DOES THIS WOMAN THINK THE AMERICAN PUBLIC IS! just insulting!

SO if a crazy person came up to her and told her he was Jesus she would repeat it? No Bachmann, you repeated it because you were using it to your advantage, now that you have been called on it you are doubling back. You are a 2 face lying hypocrite who takes federal subsidy welfare for yourself.

A woman that I never met, told me that she had sex withj Michelle Bachmann.
Not saying that she is bi or lesbian, just repeating what I was told.
Also an unkown man told me, that Mr. Bachmann is gay.
      Again, not saying just relaying
    • POPS  •  8 mths ago
Wow, this Bachmann chick is dumb as a post. She's making Palin look like a mensa candidate.

Apparently that midwest stepford wife program needs some work. The robotic brain is based on 70;s technology and their memory chips overload.

Poor Michelle. She took a triple dose of the HPV vaccine and is now retarded.
    • Steel Abs  •  8 mths ago
How the hell did she get to be a congresswoman. Imagine if she becomes president. Minnesota is a funny state.

It's a good thing someone didn't tell her that aliens are invading the Earth before the debate, there would be War of the Worlds-style pandolerium by now!
So, what is more dangerous? 1) That she can apparently say anything she wants, then just add "...or so someone told me"? Is this the new "I'm just SAYIN'!"?
or 2) Anyone can walk up to her and say anything they want, and she will repeat it as truth without checking it out? Astounding.
Random crazy person outside 7-11: "Psst. I heard Russia just launched a nuke at us!"
MB: "Quick! Launch everything we have at them!"
(later) MB: "Oopsie! Democrats made me do it!"

Yes, it IS your claim. You made it at a televised debate. Don't play games.Incidentally, while there is an extremely ignorant and vocal anti-vaccine movement, I highly doubt that this distraught mother you refer to actually existed. I would say that it was cover in case you (rightfully) got called out on your #$%$ but you're probably not that clever and just thought that "frightened mother" sounds less obviously #$%$ than "this person I met on the street".

What is Bachman's legislative record. What is there to show that she had done anything during her time in Congress? She runs her mouth a lot, that's for sure. But does she do any work? After all, are the taxpayers paying her to do something, create a record of her accomplishments? She was on Wolf Blitzer and never answered a question. To every question, she starts in telling you what Obama has done wrong. She never has an idea, a solution, a suggestion of anything that is positive. She spends 24/7 trashing O'Bama. If she were President what would she do? Anyone? She certainly isnt going to abolish the Federal Reserve and she certainly isn't going to get rid of O'Bama care.

Why does this woman and the other right wing ideologues keep up this onslaught of disinformation? What is the republican plan to put people back to work? How will they do that? Why haven't they done it when they had the chance under Bush? If they are pro-life why are they for war? If they live the American Dream why do they deny it to the poor? What have they ever done to bring peace to the world? What are they afraid of? Why do they make excuses all the time? Why do they hate our government so much? What kind of government do they want? How come they attack defenseless people? How come they have mediev al ideas on freedom of religion? Why do they pit rich against poor, white against black, Muslims against Christianity, and liberals against conservatives? Taxes are for the benefit of all and help support the country. How come they don't want to pay taxes ? How do they expect the government to function without revenue? How come their ideas benefit the very few and not the majority? Are they capable of learning at all? Didn't learn lesson from Viet Nam and now we have wars again? Do they have any love in their hearts? I heard when you lie your soul gets sick. Have they lied so much that they are all mentally deranged or is it all the alcohol they drink?
