Backlash for Lowe's as ads pulled from Muslim show

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lowe's Home Improvement has found itself facing a backlash after the retail giant pulled ads from a reality show about American Muslims.

The retail giant stopped advertising on TLC's "All-American Muslim" after a conservative group known as the Florida Family Association complained, saying the program was "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values."

The show premiered last month and chronicles the lives of five families from Dearborn, Mich., a Detroit suburb with a large Muslim and Arab-American population.

A state senator from Southern California said Sunday he was considering calling for a boycott.

Calling the Lowe's decision "un-American" and "naked religious bigotry," Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, told The Associated Press he would also consider legislative action if Lowe's doesn't apologize to Muslims and reinstate its ads. The senator sent a letter outlining his complaints to Lowe's Chief Executive Officer Robert A. Niblock.

"The show is about what it's like to be a Muslim in America, and it touches on the discrimination they sometimes face. And that kind of discrimination is exactly what's happening here with Lowe's," Lieu said.

The Florida group sent three emails to its members, asking them to petition Lowe's to pull its advertising. Its website was updated to say that "supporters' emails to advertisers make a difference."

The North Carolina-based Lowe's issued a statement apologizing for having "managed to make some people very unhappy."

"Individuals and groups have strong political and societal views on this topic, and this program became a lightning rod for many of those views," the statement said. "As a result we did pull our advertising on this program. We believe it is best to respectfully defer to communities, individuals and groups to discuss and consider such issues of importance."

The apology doesn't go far enough, Lieu said. The senator vowed to look into whether Lowe's violated any California laws and said he would also consider drafting a senate resolution condemning the company's actions.

"We want to raise awareness so that consumers will know during this holiday shopping season that Lowe's is engaging in religious discrimination," Lieu said.

Besides an apology and reinstatement of the ads, Lieu said he hoped Lowe's would make an outreach to the community about bias and bigotry.

Lieu's office said a decision was expected Wednesday or Thursday on whether to proceed with the boycott.

Lowe's said company officials are trying to make arrangements to talk directly to Lieu about his concerns and clarify the company's position.

Suehaila Amen, whose family is featured on "All-American Muslim," said she was disappointed by the Lowe's decision.

"I'm saddened that any place of business would succumb to bigots and people trying to perpetuate their negative views on an entire community," Amen, 32, told The Detroit News on Sunday.

Dawud Walid, Michigan director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, said his group felt "extreme disappointment" at Lowe's "capitulation to bigotry."

Walid said he has heard expressions of anger and calls for a boycott by Muslims but said a key to resolving the Lowe's advertising controversy will be how non-Muslim religious leaders and others react to Lowe's decision.

"I will be picking up the phone tomorrow to some of our friends and allies to explain the situation to them," Walid said Sunday.

I have always been a Lowe's shopper but also shopped at Home Depot. From now on I intend to do most of my shopping at Lowe's to help offset any business they lose over the muslims.

Lowe's has lost my business for good. Home Depot is a block farther from my home, so it's no big deal to divert my purchases there.

      More power to Lowe's

Let Lowe's advertise with whatever show they want. I applaud them for pulling their ads. This is America, they can do what they want. In the end, if they lose customers, they will pay the price, leave them alone! Forget Home Depot, I am a Lowe's customer now!!!

i'm a muslim, and if i had a multi-million dollar corporation, i would have pulled my ads from that show as well.. i'm sorry but its pure unadulterated crap. they don't even pray.. how can they call themselves muslims? they admit to drinking, and blatantly drink on the show. the women dress like they're anything but muslim, even the ones with the headscarves (for the most part) and they talk very vulgarly about issues like "sex" who the hell does that besides the kardashians? i know plenty of muslim families, being in one myself, and not a single one is as messed up as those families.. thank god for that.. the only normal family is that of the football coaches..him and his family are the only ones who are not flat out acting.

Hey Senator Ted Lieu, the American Pork Association wants to sponsor the show who do they talk too?
    • Robin  •  Seattle, United States  •  5 mths ago
Aren't the actions of senator Ted Lieu somewhat likened to extortion? "You will advertise where I tell you to or I will make a law that says you have to". And I thought we elected these idiots to protect us. Go LOWES!

I posted in a response he needs to tell citizens of the US what law Lowes violated, if he can not then it seems he would guilty of trying to infringe on the rights that are granted to US corps and extortion. I think the threats alone could be prosecuted possibly.

The very same people who are condemning Lowes for pulling their advertising from American Muslim are the same people who have no problem bashing the christian religions. They are the same so-called enlightened people who pressure our department stores into abandoning the standard merry Christmas greeting in favor of their Happy holiday greetings. Lowes has every right to do what they did and I hope they do not fold to this vicious minority that has no problem trying to force their own bigoted opinions on the rest of the country. When the Muslim leadership (and I use that term loosely) starts to publicly denounce the violence that is being thrust on the world in the name of the Islam, then maybe I will have more sympathy. When the muslim religion finally decides to acknowledge that some of the passages in the Koran that dictates that all infidels (non muslims) are to be killed is wrong, then I will at least attempt to understand and accept their views and show some tolerance. But I will never accept a so-called religion that says that it is all right (and a duty) to kill all non muslims. That is not reliigion. It is a cult.

      "legislative action"...to do WHAT?
      • ringman 5 mths ago
That's what I wondered, Lowes has certain rights like everyone has. I do not see where they extended beyond thus said rights. If they just tried to do what they are allowed to do, then any legislation to punish or inhibit their rights would seem to me be unconstitutional. This would make Sen. Lieu THREATS possibly a violation of his office. As an American citizen, I demand that the senator please explain what law Lowes violated. If he can not give a violation he needs to apologize to Lowes and the American people and then face Legal actions against for his threat to coerce Lowes to reinstate their adds.
      • ringman 5 mths ago
against him for his threats..... sorry/

What was Lowe's doing advertising on that show in the first place?
      • spike 5 mths ago
wasting their money; ratings for the show were dropping off a cliff, which is why Lowe's, along with a number of other businesses, had pulled their ads
    • KatherineJ  •  5 mths ago
While I don't necessarily agree with these groups that pressured Lowe's to pull the ads, I understand the company's decision. They were just responding to feedback from its customers. Unfortunately, their decision created more controversy than it prevented.

As for the Senator, he has every right to be offended, but he and the government have NO RIGHT to try and enforce tolerance.
      • weatherdiva3 5 mths ago
The people that were complaining about the show were not necessarily customers.

I think Lowes did the right thing by pulling their add. I would love to see what would happen in Iran if there was a show for say a Jews program or say a christan. Never would it happen, people would be BEHEADED but not here it's stil free speach and I think Lowes saw what a bunch of properganda the show was. Sorry for my SP I haven't had my firsy cup of coffee yet.
    • weatherdiva3  •  5 mths ago
Before you start cheering too loudly for Lowe's for "upholding American values" by giving in to the demands of a right-wing conservative group, you should check their business practices. You will see a lot of corporations making decisions to please certain groups then making decisions to screw over hard-working American people. They wrangle great tax breaks, keep wages down, and then lay off employees all after causing small and medium businesses, who were the tax base in that area, to go out of business.
    • Family  •  5 mths ago
If lowes is penalized for this it is just another time when a few will decide for the rest of us. Lowes should be allowed to advertise however they see fit. Sounds to me that they did not think this was good use of their advertising money. Note THEIR advertising money.

Wow, how convoluted does your thinking have to get, when you try to justify FORCING someone, by rule of law, to spend their money to support something like a lame, thinly veiled, propaganda outlet for this religion, when they don't want to ? If you love these guys, support their show/mosque/whatever....if you don't, put your money behind someone you do.The discrimination here is against Lowe's. I have an idea that will make a lot of folks in our country happy though...California, the rest of the country would like to know...what would it take for you to secede? No hard feelings, sorry it didn't work out, just leave...please, we're asking nicely...Don't make us kick you out.
