    Bahrain arrests medics after appeal bid lost

    MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) — Bahraini police have arrested five medical personnel after a court rejected appeals to overturn their convictions for roles anti-government protests last year in the Gulf kingdom.

    The move is likely to bring more criticism from rights groups, which denounced the appeals court decision.

    A total of 11 medical professionals were convicted. Bahrain's Information Affairs Authority says four with the shortest sentences — two months or less — would go free because they already served their time during a pre-appeal detention.

    The other five, whose sentences range from six months to five years, were taken into custody Tuesday, a day after their appeal was rejected. Two remain fugitives.

    Authorities claim the medics sided with protesters from Bahrain's Shiite majority, which is seeking a greater political voice in the Sunni-ruled nation.
