    Who Will Bail Next?

Will any GOP hopefuls drop out of the race since Mitt Romney sailed to easy victory in New Hampshire? Remember, Michele Bachmann fled after a poor showing in Iowa. Here’s a look at where the rest of the field stands, and who might be next to bail.

Ron Paul finished a clear second, and spoke off the cuff about defending civil liberties. He defended today’s attacks on Romney’s business practices and the former governor’s “I like to fire people” comment that went viral today. Much has been made of Paul’s young following, and with them, he’ll continue on in the race.

Newt Gingrich experienced tremendous blowback today after receiving a $5 million cash infusion into his super PAC from billionaire Sheldon Adelson. After the New Hampshire results were announced, Benjy Sarlin from Talking Points Memo tweeted that Gingrich HQ had a few journalists around but otherwise, crickets. When speaking, Gingrich reminded the TV cameras and folks in living rooms of his job-creation record.

Even a solid week of media attention lavished on Rick Santorum couldn’t help him in New Hampshire. He reached just 10 percent there, at last report. Perhaps his early South Carolina presence can help him. CNN’s John King says the Palmetto State may be more open to Santorum’s conservative values.

Buzzfeed’s McKay Coppins speculates about whether Jon Huntsman Sr.’s gravy train can keep his son in the race. Huntsman HQ sure was optimistic about third place. His foreign-policy experience earned him a few New Hampshire supporters.

Sarah Palin told Fox News tonight that Rick Perry will not drop out, and still has plenty of cash. Perry finished last in New Hampshire—literary at 1 percent, according to our colleague, David Frum—after having packed up his ship to head early to South Carolina.

The post-primary spin predicts that no candidate will drop out based on tonight’s performance, but if last-place Perry or Santorum pulled out, it wouldn't be a surprise.

In underdog, unofficial-candidate news, gay rights activist Fred Karger tweeted that he’s in eighth place while Bachmann’s Brain tweeted that “Write In” nabbed only .3 percent fewer votes than Rick Perry.

By popular votes in IA and NH, MORE people voted for Paul than Gingrich and Perry combined. Perry and Newt should quit.
    • Jr  •  4 mths ago
Rick Perry has lots of cash? Cool something most of us don't have. How many states will it take him to realize he is DONE. Same for other Rick and Newt.
    • GBJOE  •  4 mths ago
$5 MILLION from ONE individual. PACS and Corporate donations should be limited just as are the donations to the Political Parties... The "buying" of Elections through false information Ads needs to end ON ALL LEVELS. By today's Political Standards, only an individual from the 1% has a chance of being elected.

REPUB Supreme Court authorized it of course...

With the money it costs today to run for president, Harry Truman, probably the most honest president in American history, could never have been elected.
      • CARL 4 mths ago
Im sure Barak got plent of donatins of that size in the last election and plenty more for the one coming up.
    • Neal  •  4 mths ago
Perry had such a poor showing and is polling so low in SC that he should drop out because he doesn't stand a chance at getting the nomination. Santorum's close second in Iowa was a fluke and won't get near that level again. Newt is all but out because he can't get traction anywhere with his message. people are tired of hearing the same thing and of politicians pushing war and driving up the debt. Huntsman isn't getting anywhere with voters. That leaves Romney and Paul. I think that Paul's message will get get him more voters than Romney. But in the end the republican party, no matter how has more deligates, will nominate Romney because they don't want Paul to get the nomination. Remember deligates don't have to vote in the way that the election falls for their states and are free to vote for whoever they want and that'll be Romney. Even if Paul gets more deligates in the primaries Romney will still get the nomination and Paul will have to run as an independent.

You can always steal the slogan that got Santorum booted out of the senate by PA voters -- real simple -- two words run together so that people chose how to pronounce it.... DUMPRICK
      • Jack 4 mths ago
Perry is anything but dumb. Poor delivery, but he's saying all the right things. What is dumb is a post like the one above. Cute, but it says more about the poster than either of the candidates. Yeah, lets allow Romney to buy the election..
      • Nene 4 mths ago
@Jack....Perry is almost as smart as GW. One thing is for sure...he won't run out of money as long as he has an open account...compliments of the Texas taxpayers.

Rick Perry is done. He just doesn't realize it yet.

THOSE WHO TRAIL should save their money and quit the race. By popular votes in IA and NH combined, Paul comfortably outpaced Gingrich, Santorum, Perry, or Huntsman. Let the real anti-Romney candidate compete one-on-one.
      • TG 4 mths ago
Well, rarely is it 'their money' as the resent $5M in the coffers of Newts super pac.
      • Ray 4 mths ago
let them keep beating each other upp--let them stay until the GOP delegation and them fight it out after Romney gets about 30% of the vote
    • Darius1814  •  4 mths ago
The Rick's are done, so save the money and fade away please.
    • RAllen1st  •  4 mths ago
My guess for next in line to tap dance off the ticket... Rick Perry
    • George K Jr  •  4 mths ago
Media attention will hurt Santorum. He's way too bigoted and rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Gingrich has a heck of an uphill battle. Perry? Anyone who gets 1% in any state is done. He should drop out.
    • Mark Gregorio  •  New York, New York  •  4 mths ago
Perry finished last in New Hampshire—literary at 1 percent??? Really, like literary?
    • Chidi  •  4 mths ago
Perry and Huntsman are already done.Gingrich or Santorum will be out after South Carolina unless they win or finish a strong second. That will leave Romney, Paul, and either Gingrich or Santorum (whoever has does the best in South Carolina and has the most money left).
    • sing while you may  •  4 mths ago
Scary Perry will drop out after he bombs in SC. He just wants to blow his donor's money first.
    • Silverback  •  4 mths ago
If P-Rick can't win, place or show in South Carolina it's curtains for him.
    • williered  •  Spring, Texas  •  4 mths ago
Perry's "new" campaign theme song, "turn out the lights, the party is over."
His single achievement as a "candidate" was to provide SNL with a steady stream of material.

the main questions in my mind are whether romney can have another good showing in s.c. as he did in n.h., and what happens to huntsman in s.c.

romney did well in his backyard as he had to do, and imo if he does well again in s.c. the game will be all but over. as for huntsman, he is my personal favorite of the repubs as a fiscal conservative and social moderate, but his performance is likely 'too little and too late'...although i would be happy to see him do well and really mount a challenge.

as for the rest, while rick and rick and newt will keep at it in s.c., they are already done but just won't call it a day yet...and ron paul will keep at it but his best showings are likely done as well.

Romney was pro-choice before he was pro-life. Romney was for civil unions before he was against them. Romney was for gun control before he was against it. Romney favored an individual mandate to buy health insurance before he opposed it. Romney supported the stimulus before he opposed it. Romney believed in man-made climate change before he disbelieved it. The man has no principles at all - he will say whatever he thinks will get him elected.
    • Matt F  •  4 mths ago
The "fire people" attack is just stupid. A clear example of how things are taken out of context. He was talking about liking the freedom to move from one healthcare insurance provider to another at will.
    • Watserety  •  4 mths ago
Santorum MUST stay in! No one else is fighting to prevent "MAN ON DOG SEX". THAT is the defining issue of our time. Go Santorum! Keep the CRAZY coming!
    • Joseph M  •  Knob Lick, Kentucky  •  4 mths ago
Hopefully they will all bail out...
    • KennethJ  •  Atlanta, Georgia  •  4 mths ago
Santorum and Perry will be the next ones to bail after SC
Huntsman may bail if he finishs lower then 3rd place in SC
Gingrich will be the last one to bail
Paul will stay in until he runs out of money
