Bangladeshi worker killed in Tun Razak Exchange MRT accident

A worker was killed following an accident at the Tun Razak Exchange MRT underground construction site in Kuala Lumpur today. The Bangladeshi worker, identified as Safikul, 28, was dismantling a temporary structure used for slab work with a group of workers when it gave way and collapsed at 1.15am. MMC Gamuda KVMRT (T) Sdn Bhd, the main contractor for the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit, tonight confirmed the incident and said Safikul was trapped under the debris while the other workers who were with him escaped unhurt. It said that Safikul, who was working for the sub-contractor engaged in carrying out reinforced concrete works, was rushed to the Kuala Lumpur Hospital and succumbed to his injuries. "Arrangements are being made to inform the Bangladesh High Commission to send his remains back once the post-mortem is completed." This is the third fatal accident at a MRT construction site. At the same time, the accident site has been closed off for further investigation and all related parties, including the Department of Occupational Safety and Health. It was reported that the Tun Razak Exchange MRT station is the biggest among the seven underground MRT stations along the Sungai Buloh-Kajang (SBK) route which will later be extended to Serdang and Putrajaya (MRT Two Route). Construction is scheduled to be completed in July 2017. The SBK route, being built under the first phase of the MRT project, covers a distance of 51km with 31 stations and can accommodate 1.2 million commuters. On February 27, a Bangladeshi worker died in an accident at the MRT’s Semantan site while another was injured. The work at the Semantan site is contracted to Sunway Construction. In the incident, the workers were assembling a rebar cage, when the tes that held the rebars gave way and fell on them. Last August, MRT Corp’s then chief executive Datuk Azhar Abdul Hamid quit his post after an accident at its Kota Damansara site took the lives of three Bangladeshi workers. They were trapped under a 300-tonne concrete span that collapsed at the MRT worksite near the former Rubber Research Institute in Kota Damansara. The company rejected Azhar’s resignation letter. Much earlier, a motorist’s sedan was crushed when a metal slab fell on it at the MRT site in Pusat Bandar Damansara. There were no casualties in that incident. – May 24, 2015.
