Bank of America website still having problems

NEW YORK (AP) — Bank of America's consumer online banking service was slow for a fifth day Tuesday, and the bank still wasn't saying what the problem was.

The bank said many times starting Friday that it had resolved the problem, but visitors to its home page still saw an error message for much of Tuesday saying the site was "running slowly" and customers might experience delays or have difficulty accessing parts of it.

The message encouraged customers to try again at "a non-peak time" or visit an ATM or one of nearly 6,000 branches to get into their accounts.

Bank of America Corp., based in Charlotte, N.C., is the largest U.S. bank by deposits and has 29 million online customers.

Spokeswoman Tara Burke said the website problems were not the result of hacking. She declined to "break out the root cause" for the problems but said the bank was continuing to assess the situation. She said Tuesday evening that the site was largely operating normally.

This wasn't the first time this year that Bank of America's website experienced problems. Customers also had difficulty accessing their accounts in January and March. In both instances, the bank said the problems resulted from routine system upgrades.

The most recent stumble is significant because of its duration, said Ben Rushlo, director of performance management at Keynote Systems Inc., which monitors the performance of company websites.

He said it was the longest major banking website problem he's seen in 13 years with Keynote.

"It's extremely unusual in 2011, given the prevalence of online banking and that it's the de facto way people interact with banks," Rushlo said. "This is something gone awry. There's no way they would've intentionally taken down their home page."

Rushlo said that the incident doesn't seem connected with Bank of America's announcement Thursday that it would start charging customers $5 a month to use their debit cards.

Several major banks have introduced new or higher fees for checking account customers in the past year. The industry says the changes are needed because of a new regulation that limits the fees they can collect from merchants whenever customers swipe their debit cards.

The Ceo will probably get a 15 million dollar bonus for coming up with this idea.

If BoA is falsifying a DOS attack on its web site in order to prevent an electronic run on its accounts then go into the nearst branch office and close it out in person. Show this greedy corporate bastages who has the real leverage in our economy ... the customer.

Want to save the economy? Save America and make the world a better place while taking care of yourself and your family. It's easier than you think. Take all your hard-earned money OUT of the private banking conglomerate sector and into a community-based, socially conscious credit union. It's a win-win situation. Good for you. Good for me. Good for the economy. Together we can make a difference. Your money talks louder than you think. Join the revolution. End the era of private banking. Do it now before it's too late. Tell all your friends and family. Millions of Americans are making the switch. It will bring in new prosperity. But don't take it from me. See Diane Sawyer's report:

A run on accounts will make no difference to Bank of America. The Federal Reserve will step in and provide ample working capital. The American consumer has no power left. You can thank Bush and the Republicans.

Yup.. I agree with Brickell... Bailout CITY. Guys, i've given up on the "people".. Not the system. There's always been a system to keep the classes separated. But the people want it this way.

They do not want to be bothered , so they ignore internet requests and make it appear to be a technical problem.

true......Do we really need this bank at all?

Senator Dick Durbin(D-Illinois) called for a run on the bank on the floor of the Senate. Bank of America shut down their website to stop depositors from closing their accounts. It is just like banks in the 30's closing their doors to prevent a run on the bank. Since Bank of America is FDIC insured, this could end up costing taxpayers a lot of money.
      • Ken 7 mths ago
And Durbin is way out of line for doing so. No Senator should be playing politics with such a matter. It is highly unprofessional and unethical.

Walk into the branch and pull all your money out; close all your accounts! HIT THEM the only place they understand - their WALLET!

Is this a hack that BoA is not talking about? Seems like some people might be #$%$ at BoA.
    • John  •  7 mths ago
IM thinking maybe they will get more $5 bills if they are telling people to use the atm, are they going to return the money seeing it is thier fault the on line banking is not available? or is this a computer malfunction? either way are they going to hold off taking a fee untill the problem i s resolved.?

    • Robert M  •  7 mths ago
Are there really 38 million people out there that are still stupid and moronic enough to keep accounts with this blatant confidence operation laughingly refered to as a bank. Really people the only headline that might be worth reading about BoA is its summary collapse into the abyss of greed from which it came with scattered charred chunks laying around as a icon of self-destruction where greed eventually leads.

Couldn't happen to a nicer bank. Not!
    • Roger  •  7 mths ago
      How convenient.
    • allen  •  7 mths ago
So many people closing their accounts, no doubt.
    • Zip  •  7 mths ago
Keeping people from closing accounts until they forget about the new fees.
    • Jerry  •  7 mths ago
Either they're getting hacked and won't admit it, or they're trying to keep customers from accessing and/or closing their accounts. Either way, where are the Federal regulators in all of this? If this bank is too big to fail, surely it's not too small to regulate.

      Two words people... CREDIT UNION...
    • Jack  •  7 mths ago
Like I tell everyone here, Bank of America stinks! They were involved in the mortgage scandals, they used federal TARP money to buy other banks, wont give loans to small businesses and now they want to raise the fees on checking/debit card purchases. There are plenty of banks out there to choose from. Walk into your local Bank of America branch and withdraw & close your checking account and switch to a friendlier bank :)

The next BOA board meeting will be held in an underground bunker.

It's being overloaded with people moving their money somewhere else.

And then they want to charge me an extra $5 a month for using my ATM card! Morons!
