Barack and Michelle Obama exchange touching Valentine's Day messages

Barack Obama has wished his wife Michelle Obama a happy Valentine’s Day.

Composing one of his first messages since leaving the White House last month, the former President shared a photo of himself and Michelle on Twitter.

The outgoing President wished his wife a happy Valentine’s Day, saying that even though he had spent almost 28 years with her, every day still felt new.

The former First Lady quickly replied, sharing a holiday photo of their bare legs on the sand. “Happy Valentine's Day to the love of my life and favourite island mate,” she wrote.

People commented on the images pleading for the couple to come back to the White House. "Please come back its all falling part," said one person, referring to the Trump administration.

In one of their last public outings together, Obama gave a highly emotional and even tearful tribute to Michelle as part of his farewell address.

“Michelle, for the past 25 years, you have not only been my wife and mother of my children; you have been my best friend,“ he said while wiping tears from his cheeks.

“You took on a role you didn’t ask for and you made it your own with grace and with grit and with style and good humour. You made the White House a place that belongs to everybody.”

The couple, both Chicago natives, met in the late 1980's at a local law firm called Sidley & Austin. At the age of just 25, Michelle was assigned as a mentor to an associate who was, you guessed it, Obama.

Michelle resisted when he first asked her out, once saying in an interview that she felt it would be ”tacky“ if they started going out because they were ”the only two black people“ at the company. But she did not put up a fight for long and they started dating later that summer and by 1991 they were engaged and 1992 married.

Since bidding farewell to the White House after eight years there, they have been on holiday in the British Virgin Islands alongside Sir Richard Branson.

While enjoying some downtime on the island, Obama condemned President Donald Trump’s hard-line immigration order, which bans immigrants from seven Muslim-majority nations.

“The President fundamentally disagrees with the notion of discriminating against individuals because of their faith or religion,” Obama's spokesman said in a statement.

“Citizens exercising their Constitutional rights to assemble, organise and have their voices heard by their elected officials is exactly what we expect to see when American values are at stake.”
