Barack Obama Wins Soft Bowl With CBS’ Gayle King In Super Bowl Interview

“We’re like everybody else, folks rated the commercials,” said Barack Obama today giving a thumbs up and a thumbs down in his last Super Bowl pre-game interview as President of the United States. It has become a tradition in this administration for the President to chat live with the big game host network Sunday. Obama sat down with CBS This Morning co-host Gayle King in the Executive Mansion’s Blue Room.

In what was totally a game of touch rather tackle, King, who is a long time Obama supporter and donor, tossed one softball after another to both POTUS and FLOTUS. Yep, Michelle Obama joined her husband for the first time in the pre-game sitdown at the White House. Of course, unlike every other Super Bowl pre-game interview Obama has done since taking office in 2009, a different President will be in the White House for sure next year. Surprisingly, with today’s fluffy conversation coming almost right between the Iowa Caucuses and this week’s New Hampshire primary, the 2016 campaign was a barely hinted at.

Other topics touched upon by King and the Obamas were future post-Presidency plans for travel, what a digital deadzone parts of the White House can be, their first date and how the First Lady cares “deeply about the halftime game show” featuring Coldplay, Bruno Mars and long time Obama pal Beyonce. Obviously comfortable with King, Obama filled out a secret prediction of who would win today’s game between the Denver Broncos and the Carolina Panthers. The POTUS Prediction will be read out on CBS This Morning on Monday.

Unlike 2014, when Fox News Channel’s Bill O’Reilly noticeably sparred with Obama over policy, this year’s 7-minute interview was more morning show feel good feature in tone than hard news. While King was to conduct another interview with POTUS today talking about the recent missle launch by North Korea and more serious topics, the chat with the First Couple started off with greetings and a first question of “do you have any special plans for the day?” Putting on their regular Americans pose, the Obamas talked about the regular group of friends they’ll have over to watch the Super Bowl, what they’ll be eating and drinking and where everyone sits. However, unlike last year’s Deflategate dominated chat with NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, the blazer wearing but tieless President didn’t go totally casual and sip a beer on camera today.

Mainly remembered for the power outage in New Orleans’ Superdome that halted play between the ultimately winning Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco 49ers, the 2013 CBS hosted Super Bowl also saw Obama interviewed by CBS News anchor Scott Pelley. The two discussed such issues as the role of women in combat and the then growing concerns about concussions in the NFL. King’s interview with the Obamas today was first formally announced in mid-January at the TCA winter press tour. CBS say that portions of the interviews at the White House will show up on other programming like CBS This Morning over the next few days.

Live on CBS from Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA this afternoon’s Super Bowl 50 sees the Broncos and the Panthers square off around 3:30 PM PT – and late night hosts Stephen Colbert and James Corden both have special shows afterwards. Yes there will also be lots of those ads the Obamas rated — including a hefty collection from Hollywood of upcoming movies and celebrity shilling.
