Barnes & Noble’s first big move since tie-up with Microsoft: Help users ditch tablets

Barnes & Noble and Microsoft announced in late April that the companies were uniting in a spinoff that would focus on B&N’s digital Nook business, and now the company has made its first major announcement since the deal was completed. While the bookseller has focused mainly on its own eReaders as well as tablet and smartphone apps with its Nook strategy, the company’s first move since the Microsoft deal is to give readers a way to ditch tablets and read Nook books on their PCs. “Nook for Web” is a direct response to Amazon’s Web-based Kindle offering, allowing customers to read books right from within their Web browsers. “There’s no need to download special software to access your digital library,” B&N’s digital boss Jamie Iannone said. ”NOOK for Web seamlessly combines Barnes & Noble’s best-in-class digital reading experience and unrivaled NOOK Store to deliver an immersive, easy-to-use solution for readers to consume millions of titles right from their Web browser.” Nook for Web is available immediately at no additional cost to users, and Barnes & Noble’s press release follows below.
