Baseball-Highlights of Saturday's Major League Baseball games

April 11 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Saturday's Major League Baseball games: - - - Royals 6, Angels 4 Former Los Angeles Angels second baseman Kendrys Morales had three hits to lead Kansas City to their fifth consecutive win, topping the Angels on Saturday. Morales, signed in the offseason to replace Billy Butler as the designated hitter, is off to a fast start, hitting .421 (8 of 19). The Royals had 12 hits Saturday, including home runs from third baseman Mike Moustakas and catcher Salvador Perez. The offense came in support of starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie, who was able to get through seven innings, giving up four runs, six hits and one walk. - - - Red Sox 8, Yankees 4 Right-hander Joe Kelly allowed only a single in seven innings and center fielder Brock Holt had four hits as Boston followed up the longest game in team history with a victory over New York. Kelly (1-0) initially was going make a rehab start but returned from a strained right biceps after a successful bullpen session Wednesday in Philadelphia. - - - Padres 10, Giants 2 San Diego rocked San Francisco and Madison Bumgarner. This time, James Shields got the better of Bumgarner, unlike in the last year's World Series, when Bumgarner beat Shields in Games 1 and 5 when Shields was pitching for the Royals. San Diego chased Bumgarner (1-1) after three innings. - - - Cubs 9, Rockies 5 It took four games spread over a week, but Chicago finally showed some offensive life -- plenty of it, actually. After scoring three runs on 12 hits in their first three games, two of them losses, the Cubs compiled a 12-hit that attack included three home runs and two triples, both by center fielder Dexter Fowler. - - - Cardinals 4, Reds 1 Matt Adams homered and Michael Wacha pitched six strong innings, lifting St. Louis over previously unbeaten Cincinnati. Third baseman Todd Frazier started the scoring for Cincinnati (4-1) in the first inning with a line-drive home run that barely cleared the left-field wall and put the Reds ahead 1-0. It was Frazier's third home run this season. - - - White Sox 5, Twins 4 J.B. Shuck lined a pinch single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in the winning run as the White Sox got their first win of the season. Right-handed closer David Robertson pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save, as the White Sox (1-4) came back from a 4-0 deficit. - - - Rays 2, Marlins 0 Right-hander Chris Archer pitched seven shutout innings and Tampa Bay made a pinch-hit home run from Tim Beckham and an RBI double from third baseman Evan Longoria stand up. Archer allowed only one hit and one walk and didn't allow a runner to reach third base. - - - Mariners 5, Athletics 4 (11) Shortstop Brad Miller drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI double in the top of the 11th inning for Seattle. First baseman Logan Morrison led off the inning with a single against left-hander Fernando Abad, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on Miller's opposite-field double down the left-field line. - - - Phillies 3, Nationals 2 (10) Center fielder Odubel Herrera drove home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning with a double as Philadelphia beat Washington. Catcher Carlos Ruiz led off the 10th by singling off Tanner Roark (0-1), the fifth Washington pitcher. Right fielder Grady Sizemore flied out to deep left, with Ruiz advancing to second on the play. Herrera then slapped an 0-2 fastball from Roark down the first base line to drive in Ruiz. - - - Diamondbacks 6, Dodgers 0 Arizona rookie right-hander Archie Bradley gave up one hit in six shutout innings and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt homered and drove in three runs in the Diamondbacks' victory at Chase Field. Bradley, 22, struck out six and walked four in his major-league debut after winning the final spot in the rotation the last week of spring. - - - Rangers 6, Astros 2 Texas starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo, making his home debut for his new team just 15 miles from where he grew up, gave the Rangers a needed boost. A pitching star at Fort Worth's Trimble Tech High School, Gallardo surrendered two runs, scattered eight hits and struck out seven in 5 2/3 innings while performing in front of large contingent of family and friends among the 36,833 at Globe Life Park. - - - Tigers 9, Indians 6 Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona said it best. "That's not only a good lineup, it's a hot lineup," Francona said after the Detroit Tigers slugged their way past the Indians at Progressive Field to remain unbeaten to start the season at 5-0. The Tigers roughed up the Indians' bullpen for seven runs in the last three innings, including a four-run ninth inning. - - - Orioles 7, Blue Jays 1 Pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez was ready for a fresh start after scuffling through his first season with Baltimore. Though the sample size is small, the early results are sterling. Jimenez pitched seven innings of one-hit ball, Jonathan Schoop hit his first career grand slam, and the Orioles defeated Toronto. - - - Brewers 6, Pirates 0 Everything went according to plan for the Milwaukee Brewers. Their offense, from top to bottom, was productive; their defense was crisp and their pitching was downright stellar en route to victory over the Pirates that snapped a season-opening four-game losing streak. - - - Braves 5, Mets 3 Supposedly rebuilding Atlanta is off to an impressive and unexpected start. Freddie Freeman homered and Julio Teheran allowed just one hit until the seventh inning as the Braves improved to 5-0 with a victory over New York. - - - (Editing By Cameron French)
