April 17 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Sunday's Major League Baseball games: Yankees 4, Mariners 3 Moved down to sixth in the lineup, Alex Rodriguez homered on the first pitch he saw as the New York Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 4-3 on Sunday to end a four-game losing streak. Hitless in 19 at-bats, Rodriguez lined a pitch from Hisashi Iwakuma (0-2) into the left-field seats. Masahiro Tanaka (1-0) won the 12th matchup of Japanese pitchers while facing his former teammate from the Rakuten Golden Eagles in Japan's Pacific League. Tanaka allowed three runs (two earned) and six hits in seven innings. Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 3 Aaron Sanchez gave up just one run on two hits and struck out seven over seven innings, and Jose Bautista hit a solo home run and had two RBIs as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 5-3. The Blue Jays, who had a season-high 14 hits, had lost six of their last seven games against the Red Sox, including the first two of their four-game Patriots' Day weekend series at Fenway Park. Phillies 3, Nationals 2 (10 innings) The Philadelphia Philles won 3-2 in 10 innings as Washington Nationals closer Jonathan Papelbon, playing against his old team, blew his first save of the season. National League MVP Bryce Harper crushed a deep shot into right-center field in the top of the 10th inning to give Washington the lead with his sixth homer of the season. But it was not enough as Phildaelphia shortstop Freddy Galvis drove a Papelbon fastball deep into left field and the Nats lost for just the second time this season. Rockies 2, Cubs 0 Tyler Chatwood's perfect game bid fell short but he still outdueled Chicago ace Jon Lester as the Colorado Rockies claimed a 2-0 victory over the Cubs. The Rockies (7-5) won their fourth game in five starts, while the Cubs (9-3) suffered their second loss in three games and dropped their first series of the season. Mets 6, Indians 0 The New York Mets jumped on former Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber for six runs in the first two innings, Steven Matz pitched seven scoreless innings, and the Mets rolled to a 6-0 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Matz (1-1) gave up three hits, struck out nine and walked two to pick up the victory as the Mets won two of three games in the weekend series. Astros 5, Tigers 4 Jose Altuve provided offense early and often and the Houston Astros held off the stubborn Detroit Tigers 5-4. Altuve went 2-for-4 with a first-inning home run that got the Astros (5-8) going plus a two-run double. Houston built a 5-0 lead in support of right-hander Mike Fiers before the Tigers (7-4) incrementally chipped away at that advantage. Rays 3, White Sox 2 The Tampa Bay Rays got strong pitching from Matt Moore and an offensive spark from outfielder Brandon Guyer, edging the Chicago White Sox 3-2. Guyer went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, and Moore struck out 10 while pitching into the seventh inning for the Rays (5-7). The White Sox (8-4) were held in check for the second day in a row after coming to town with a four-game win streak. Cardinals 4, Reds 3 St. Louis catcher Eric Fryer made his first start of the season one to remember. Fryer, giving ironman starter Yadier Molina the day off, went 3-for-3 and doubled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Cardinals a 4-3 decision over the Cincinnati Reds. Athletics 3, Royals 2 Josh Reddick gave Oakland victory, hitting a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning to score the speedy Billy Burns and give the A's a 3-2 victory over the Kansas City Royals. Braves 6, Marlins 5 (10 innings) Mallex Smith had a game-winning RBI single in the top of the 10th inning as the Atlanta Braves defeated the Miami Marlins 6-5 to sweep the three-game series after arriving in Miami as a winless team. Diamondbacks 7, Padres 3 Outfielder Yasmany Tomas drove in three runs with a pair of homers and second baseman Brandon Drury added a two-run homer Sunday afternoon as the Arizona Diamondbacks defeated the San Diego Padres 7-3 in the rubber match of a three-game series. Twins 3, Angels 2 (12 innings) Oswaldo Arcia's two-out single in the bottom of the 12th inning lifted Minnesota to a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels as the Twins won their third straight after starting the season with nine consecutive defeats. Pirates 9, Brewers 3 Pittsburgh gained the upper hand early with a five-run third inning and Juan Nicasio delivered a quality start to lead the Pirates to a 9-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Dodgers 3, Giants 1 Kenta Maeda is looking like another good international investment by the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Japanese right-hander finally gave up a run Sunday -- but only one. He outpitched San Francisco right-hander Jeff Samardzija as the Dodgers won 3-1, taking two of three from the Giants at Dodger Stadium this weekend. Maeda gave up a solo home run to Giants second baseman Joe Panik with two outs in the third inning. It was the first run Maeda had allowed in his first three starts for the Dodgers, snapping a 14 2/3 scoreless innings streak to start his major league career. Rangers v Orioles (postponed) The game between the Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles was postponed due to heavy rain in Texas and rescheduled for June 20.
