Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

Feb 4 (The Sports Xchange) - The Baltimore Orioles acquired right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne from the San Diego Padres on Thursday for minor-league right-hander Jean Cosme. Despaigne struggled in 2015 and went 5-9 with a 5.80 ERA in 34 appearances (18 starts). He went 4-7 with a 3.36 ERA in 16 starts in 2014 as a rookie. Cosme made 12 starts for Single-A Aberdeen last season and went 3-5 with a 4.74 ERA. He was Baltimore's 17th-round selection in 2014. - - The Los Angeles Dodgers announced the signing of free-agent second baseman Howie Kendrick. The 32-year-old Kendrick agreed to a two-year, $20 million contract last week after rejecting the team's one-year, $15.8 million qualifying offer. - - Tampa Bay Rays left-hander Drew Smyly won his arbitration case and will make $3.75 million in 2016. The Rays submitted a figure of $3.2 million but the arbitrator sided with Smyly, who made $2.65 million last season. Smyly went 5-2 with a 3.11 ERA in 12 starts last season. He was plagued by a left shoulder injury that prompted two stints on the disabled list. - - Right-hander Jake Arrieta and the Chicago Cubs are scheduled for an arbitration hearing on Tuesday in Arizona. There was a significant gap between Arrieta's request of $13 million for 2016 and the Cubs' offer of $7.5 million when the two sides exchanged salary figures in January. Arrieta won the 2015 National League Cy Young Award after a stellar season that included a trip to the playoffs. He posted a 22-6 record with a 1.77 ERA. - - Veteran outfielder Jonny Gomes agreed to a one-year contract with the Rakuten Eagles of Japan's Pacific League. Gomes was a major-league free agent and was unable to land a deal. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
