Running in cycles of 5,125 years each, some say the long count part of the Mayan calendar, which is shaped like a wheel, reaches its end at the winter solstice on December 21, 2012. Others suggest the end of a calendar cycle means nothing more than a new beginning, like turning the page as we do every January 1 in the Gregorian calendar. In any case, here are some events happening around the Bay Area in honor of the Mayan calendar's end.

A Chance to Dance

If you're keen to take the chance to dance the night away, doomsday parties are scheduled all over the Bay Area. Live bands and DJs will be on hand to assist with the countdown to the apocalypse as midnight approaches. DNA Lounge's Winter Solstice Party, "The End," begins at 10 p.m. on Friday, featuring Zion*1. Advance tickets are $25. At 375 11th St., San Francisco, until 4 a.m. Alternatively, "if you're still here," the DNA Lounge suggests, "come on out and party like it's the end of the world" on the following night, as well.

Skate to the Brink

End of the World Roller Disco: A Black & White Affair takes place on Thursday, December 20, at CeELLspace, 2050 Bryant St. at 18th Street, San Francisco. Entry, $15; skate rental, $5.
