BBC Wants To Scan Your Face To See If You’re Enjoying Its Shows

The BBC has confirmed plans to use face-scanning technology to read viewers’ emotions and find out how they react to its shows.

Working with the Insight division of BB Worldwide, British firm CrowdEmotion uses cameras to film the subtle reactions on viewers’ face enabling researchers to determine their subconscious response to different programmes.

The tech analyses facial reactions to determine six possible emotional responses: sadness, puzzlement, happiness, fear, rejection surprise.

Following a successful trial involving 5,000 viewers, the BBC plans to use the face-scanning technique in future research.

The BBC says that the trial: “enabled us to find out the emotional response of each person and how they truly felt about the content they were viewing”.

The tests have been carried out around the world, including 200 cameras installed in UK homes to measure reactions to a variety of programmes including Sherlock.

The BBC hopes that the technology will enable it to guide viewers towards more of the programme that they’ll like in future.
