Beck Uses Math ‘Equation’ to Explain Argument Against Gay Marriage

santorumGlenn Beck launched his radio show this morning with a rousing discussion about Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum and his recent statements about gay marriage.

Beck started the conversation off by offering up the definition of the word “bigot” — a term that is often utilized in the gay marriage debate. “The definition of bigot is somebody that won‘t listen to anybody else’s side, because of their point of view…they try to shut down everyone else’s point of view,” he explained. ”If you won‘t tolerate someone else’s point of view, then you are a bigot.”

His point, which is something that is often lost on both sides of the contentious same-sex marriage debate, is that one can disagree while still being open to the thoughts and views of the opposing side. When an individual doesn’t hold the capacity to at least hear out those with whom he or she disagrees, bigotry comes into play.

Throughout the discussion, Beck reiterated his support for civil marriage, while also driving home his belief in the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman.

“I don’t care — if you want to sleep with your boyfriend and you’re a guy…that’s up to you. You don’t destroy marriage to do it,” he said. ”I have exactly the same opinion on gay marriage that President Obama has. Exactly. Unless he’s lying.”

    glenn-beck

Toward the end of the discussion, he further explained his stance on same-sex unions:

“I’m for civil marriage. All the rights, civil marriage, that’s fine…My solution is take government out of marriage entirely. What is government doing in marriage?…But you cannot change the law. You can’t change one part of the equation without the other part of the equation.”

The equation Beck is referring to involves the notion that one man plus one woman inevitably (and historically) equals marriage. Violating this concept, which many social conservatives embrace, would essentially, in their view, be like saying that one plus one can equal something other than two (a mathematical impossibility).

Changing what has always been reality, Beck maintains, would open up the floodgates to other changes to the matrimonial equation. He explains:

“The equation is: one guy, one woman equals marriage. That’s the equation. One plus one — one guy, plus one woman — equals marriage. Now, let’s change the second variable. One guy — change the second variable — plus one guy — equals marriage. One woman plus one woman equals marriage. Okay, well how about we change the other variable. Two guys plus one woman equals marriage. One guy plus three women equal marriage.”

Laws, Beck says, aren’t based on personal morals or certitude. ”If you really think that moral certitude — your moral certitude, my moral certitude, anybody else’s moral certitude — is the way we run our country, well you’re mistaken,” he said.

“Our laws were based on God’s laws. If you don’t like that, fine. Fine. That’s totally cool,” he said. “But you must change the Constitution to be able to change the formula. You have to do it.”

Legally speaking, a same-sex marriage functions identically to an opposite-sex marriage. No, procreation is NOT a consideration here. Male/female couples are not required to prove either ability or intent to procreate in order to get a marriage license. Some heterosexual couples voluntarily opt to remain childless. Others are childless for physical reasons. Some are simply elderly and cannot procreate due to age. Yes, we do allow old people to get married, even though they cannot breed.

Ironically, most supporters of polygamy are not free-love liberals, they are Old Testament conservatives who argue (correctly) that in Biblical times polygamy was an accepted practice.

However, modern marriage law is incompatible with polygamy for the simple reason that we no longer maintain the assumption that only one person in the marriage (the husband) has control of the marriage. Women are no longer "property" of their husbands. With this being the case, modern marriage law works under the assumption that both parties in the marriage are equals. Which is why it works in both opposite-sex and same-sex scenarios.

The legal problem with polygamy is that it is virtually impossible to extend equal rights within a marriage to more than two people. For example, a basic right of marriage is making medical decisions for an incapacitated spouse. In a polygamous marriage this could be a problem if multiple spouses are in disagreement. Inheritance, property and parental rights issues also become vastly more complicated.

So same-sex marriage is NOT actually a "slippery slope" into polygamy. The two are legally very different constructs, and while allowing same-sex marriages requires only a slight modification as to who is allowed to marry, polygamy would require either a new legal construct, or a reversion to the ancient model of one dominant spouse ruling over multiple inferior spouses.

      The issues are completely different.

Most people have read the Bible more often than the US Constitution . They should attend Constitution classes, time to time ..not just Bible school .

So if this ever goes to the Supreme Court you think it will win (I'd guess maybe under the 4th and definitely 14th)? I think it will be there eventually.
      • AMercer 4 mths ago
Actually, I do not believe most people have read the bible. They may have skimmed thru it or listened to sermons about it but I doubt they actually read it from beginning to end.
      • LouM 4 mths ago
Most people treat the bible like a software agreement license. The all just scroll to the end and click "I agree" without ever reading the #$%$ thing.

How does Glenn Beck feel about divorce's effect on "the sanctity of marriage"? Specifically, his own divorce?
      • oripunk3485 4 mths ago
Buckaroo - what makes marriage sacred in the first place?
      • Twin Claw 4 mths ago
"What makes a marriage sacred is the fact marriage has (Christian) religious roots."

yo, mr. ------- know-nothing. Marriage existed LONG BEFORE Christ.

"It's when to 2 people come together before God and give their life to serve one another and the God that instituited the sacred institution of marriage."

'Sanctity' in marriage, assuming there ever was one, ENDED with my parents' generation (bless them; 36 years and still strong!).

and how is institution with 65%+ divorce rate sacred? Do you even understand the word's meaning?
      • AMercer 4 mths ago
Theon78. Do you believe that religion has a monopoly on marriage? Do you argue that two atheists cannot marry? What about non-christians? From your reply you indicated that marriage is christian. Does that mean two hindus cannot marry?

As for the original question I think Oripunk3485 is making a darned good point. You have a person (Beck) who is arguing that gay marriage will destroy the santicty of marriage. However, this person has already been married and divorced. How can someone argue that gay marriage will harm the sanctity of marriage when they have already harmed it to begin with. That would be like BP opposing a program that ships oil over the Gulf of Mexico because they say it could harm the environment.
    • GRC  •  Richardson, Texas  •  4 mths ago
Well it's not like their are 50 million gay people waiting to get married. Geez, a civil union is a civil union. Who cares who the players are ? A gay person should have marriage rights just like any other person in this world. Do you really care if 2 guys or 2 girls get joined ? It doesn't affect you at all. Gay people only want the same rights enjoyed in marriage that others enjoy. How would you like to be in a union w/ someone and that person dies and their family takes everything you and your partner have worked for for 20 years. Are people really that selfish that they don't want people to enjoy the benefit of a union. So Sad !
      • Ralph 4 mths ago
It is all about establishing heterosexual couples as superior to homosexual couples under the LAW. That was one of the bases for throwing out Prop 8 in California. The Constitution does not permit the law to recognize classes with more rights than others. Yes, they are that selfish, GRC. It is quite clear how petty people like Santorum are. They would prefer to destroy marriage altogether than share it.

The argument that gays should not be allowed to marry because they cannot have children is illogical... by that same logic two senior citizens (one male and one female) who want to get married cannot have children either... so if you are going to use the argument that having a child is the purpose of marriage then that logically means that the two senior citizens should be forbidden to get married as well... simple math...
    • ChristopherB  •  4 mths ago
Hmm. He must have a different version of the constitution than I have seen. No gods are ever mentioned

Beck loses his argument when he claims that "our laws were based on God's laws".

      I. This is a secular nation, NOT a theocracy.

      2. If there is a God, he/she surely is NOT impressed with the laws of humans. There's nothing Godly about the IRS.
    • ConstantCraving  •  4 mths ago
Oh, Glenn. First of all, "our" law's are not based on your god's laws. Secondly, if you do adhere to your god's laws, then "what god has joined together let no man put asunder" and so you are technically still married to your first wife and therefore a bigamist. How's that for math!
    • ChristopherW  •  Irvine, California  •  4 mths ago
I love how this article attempts to make Beck look as if he actually has a point.
    • Big Bagel  •  4 mths ago
Actually Glenn, the definition of bigot is this: a person who is obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially : one who regards or treats the members of a group with hatred and intolerance. You can't even get the definition right.
    • mutnarf  •  4 mths ago

Marriage in this country has been mostly a religious ceremony. We cannot forget that "Adam's rib" had no rights and wasn't allowed to vote in this country... for a long time after the civil war.
Historical facts are no reason to keep to an outdated system.
Using that argument... women would not be able to work, vote, own property... they would be treated as property... used to clean and maintain the home and clothing, have children and feed their family by cooking.

Civil unions are preferred by many traditional couples of one man and one woman. Many like the thought of that protection rather than no protection when they live together without the sanctity of religious marriage.

If marriage were separated from the government... then all the *advantages* married people have over single people could disappear.
Just getting married and getting pregnant gives a tax credit. Having a child, even out of wedlock... gives a tax credit. Getting married, having children... is a choice.

Back in the olden days... many children were needed because we were mostly an agricultural society and the more hands to work the land... the more chance of a successful survival rate.

In today's society and modern times... giving couples a tax break because they chose to have children... smacks of favoritism... and inequality... since having lots of children doesn't really benefit our government... so, why the tax breaks today for having children?
Just because they've done it that way doesn't mean it should continue.

Same with marriage. It was a religious institution.

What business does government have saying how many people can be in a marriage?
Or how many of what sex? Why should our government set the standards for marriage?
The answer, honestly, is that if they stopped giving tax breaks and privileges for marriage... the government shouldn't be involved in marriage laws at all!!
    • David  •  4 mths ago
Well, if he thinks US laws should be based on "God's Laws," then let's round up all the adulterers in the USA, read them Leviticus 20:10 (adulterers must be executed) and stone each and every one.
We can start with Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich, and any US politician guilty of it, just for starters.
      Yep . . .
    • CB  •  4 mths ago
Gay marriage would boost our economy with weddings (involving many businesses - wedding invitations, bakeries for the wedding cake, jewelers for wedding rings, event transportation, event photography, wedding planning services, formal wedding attire, wedding locations, banquet/reception locations, catering), travel (honeymoons), home purchases, home furnishing purchases, etc. In allowing the homosexual spouse to receive insurance benefits as a spouse, it would allow one partner to stay at home and take him/her out the work place so there will be more jobs available for those in the work force.

Let's move forward. Someone else's marriage has no impact on mine. What about all the people cheating on or abusing their spouses? Their behavior doesn't affect the value of my marriage.
    • D P  •  4 mths ago
I say the conservatives aren't conservative enough. Support Biblical marriage. Give daughters away as property to men, so they kept as wife-slaves until death.
...So, now that we see how ridiculous this sounds, keep the government out of "marriage". Stop giving tax breaks for it, and stop using a single religion to define law.
    • Matthew  •  4 mths ago
And yet no math equation has been found to account for why anyone would care less what Glenn Beck is babbling about.
