Belarus blocks social media sites on holiday

MINSK, Belarus (AP) — The authoritarian government of Belarus blocked access to Facebook, Twitter and a major Russian social networking site Sunday in an attempt to prevent opposition protests on a national holiday. Thousands of police and special forces were deployed in the center of Minsk, the capital.

The respected rights group Vesna said the government also detained dozens of opposition activists, including Stanislav Shushkevich, Belarus' first post-Soviet leader. Many other activists were called in by the KGB and warned not to protest, Vesna spokesman Valentin Stefanovich said.

The government is trying to contain swelling public discontent as Belarus suffers its worst financial crisis since the fall of the Soviet Union.

President Alexander Lukashenko said Sunday that "an escalation of information intervention is under way" as part of plans drawn up in "the capitals of separate countries" to bring about a popular revolution.

"We understand that the goal of these attacks is to sow uncertainty and alarm, to destroy social harmony, and in the end to bring us to our knees and bring to naught the achievements of our independence," Lukashenko said in opening a military parade on Independence Day, the anniversary of the end of Nazi occupation in 1944. He wore a military uniform, as did his 6-year-old son.

Belarus is under pressure from Russia and the West. Moscow has been pushing for greater control over the Belarusian economy in exchange for loans to help Lukashenko's government weather the financial turmoil, while the European Union has threatened to expand sanctions imposed on Lukashenko as punishment for his crackdown on the opposition.

For the first time, Russian troops took part in the annual military parade. Russian state television, which broadcasts in Belarus, has supported the Belarusian protesters by showing their rough treatment at the hands of police.

A new opposition group called "Revolution by Social Networks" has held a series of Internet-organized rallies in about 30 cities and towns. The rallies have drawn thousands of protesters, who carry no signs and walk silently through the streets clapping in unison.

Eager to avoid protests on the national holiday, the government on Saturday began blocking access to the social media sites, including VKontakte, a Russian version of Facebook.

The opposition group appealed to Russian authorities on Sunday to respond to the Belarusian government's interference, activist Vyacheslav Dianov said.

Shushkevich returned to Minsk on Sunday after he and about 20 students were taken off a train from Vilnius, Lithuania, and held overnight. Shushkevich, who had met with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton while in Vilnius, said he and the students were released with a warning not to take part in protests Sunday.

It was unclear whether protests would be held Sunday evening and if so where, given that activists were unable to communicate by Internet and the center of Minsk was essentially blocked off by police.

The problem with Belarus is that the majority of Earth's population has no idea it even exists.

Yep, they definately need to spend more dollars on tourism promotion to bring in tourist dollars. But then who has any money to travel anymore. This NWO sure does suck for the vast majority of humanity. Must be nice to be a politician, royalty, banking family elite, billionair, or another branch of the criminal elite that now run the world with lies, deceit, and unquenchable greed.

The problem of Earth is that Americans don't know anything and think they are majority...

How about the until recently pro-Western Ukraine. Despite its immense resources, its per capita GDP is two and a half times lower than in Belarus.

Lobster_of_Love you are a complete idiot and should read up on some history. The Soviet Union liberated Belarus,as well as Poland, Chechoslovakia, Romania. The U.S. only helped liberated France, Belgium etc. America and England entered Europe in June of 1944, while the Soviet Red Army had been pushing back the Nazis since 1941. So if most of Europe is not speaking German they should be saying "Spasibo" to a Russian.

Finally an intelligent American who knows about WW2.

Actually if both of you knew anything is that Russia received billions in equipment and money under the lend lease act, that without, Russia would not had survived, and Moscow would had been taking. Remember that until America entered, Germany was winning, and Britain was in no condition to liberate Europe, and neither was Russia.

My wife is from Belarus and is on a 6 week visit to Minsk right now. I hopew and pray she and the kids are OK there. Lukashenko is a crazy fool. I hope the people of Belarus could get him out of office, but even if 80% vote to oust him....he'd still end up winning....The people are just stuck with the dictator.
      • Longhorn_72 11 mths ago
Don't worry you're wife will be OK. If you've ever been to Belarus you know that there is very little crime, and people respect each other. As long as she stays away from protests she will be perfectly fine. She's probably safer there than in most major U.S. cities.
      • preppylilkitten 11 mths ago
        She will be alright :)
      • A Yahoo! User 11 mths ago
Correction to the poster above: She's probably safer in Belarus than any other country on earth (with the exception of maybe Israel with it's massive foreign aids handouts).

Centrally planned economies do NOT work. Socialism works until you run out of money. It's been proven over and over again. But then there are narcissistic morons who think that the reason these didn't work because it wasn't done right. These idiots always think they can do better.
    • A Yahoo! User  •  11 mths ago
Shutting down protests justs gives the all the more to protest about. Let the protesters vent and all you'll get is a bunch of people complaining on the net. Works for the US.
    • Kip  •  11 mths ago
LOL @ the trolls who claim the Bolsheviks liberated Belarus from the NAZI's. Learn English first, and then the words "liberated" and "occupied". Russia liberated nobody...they only replaced one evil with another. Also look up "Molotov - Ribbentrop Pact". Russia/USSR was NAZI Germany's #1 ally and trading partner up until Hitler decided to invade the USSR. Lenin and Stalin were responsible for the deaths of over 20,000,000 people including the starvation of Ukrainians and the illegal invasion of Finland in 1939 along with the illegal occupation of Eastern Europe including Belarus for over half a century. The US should have dropped two more nukes after Japan. One on Berlin and one on Moscow. Luskashenko was not only installed by the Kremlin (Yelstin) he has been kept in power ($$$) by the Kremlin ever since (Tsar Putin).

What is better, having president for life Lukashenko or being an EU puppet?

Be careful who you support, "protestors"!
    • ValedaM  •  11 mths ago
My daughter-in-law is a political refugee from Belarus. She cannot return home. Hopefully the people of Belarus will keep protesting until Lukashenko can be ousted one way or another. As far as I know, he is the only dictator in Europe. One is too many.

Did "demonstrators" presented anything to other people? - nothing
No democracy vision no economy plans
But they want to destroy what they have like Gorbachev did?!!!! and entire world was lauphing and appload??? They are werth than hippy - those destroied only themselves with drugs and did not call to destroy their country (or were delt with harder than in Belarus)
Belarus goes on a viable independance path somewhat similar to China: you want business - do business to a sertain limit (not able to destroy country and other people around you). You want less risky life - go for government plants and other jobs. You can not buy for mony any political power.
      What "democracy" the demonstrators wont?
Englend, France, Germany, Greece, Poland, USA? Which economy "market" they want with it?
They do not tell, because their "leeders" want democracy for themselves and "somebody" to sell Belarus in pieces. The other demonstrators just are being used (nothing comes without clear plans)
Lukashenko prepresent at least democracy of those millions that clearly support him. Do demonstrators what democracy without those millions? If demonstrators want democracy they should respect the existing one and et least present their plans first, clear and discuss openly.
We have Obama promissing one thing and delivering other. You have Gorbachev and Eltsin. Stop being fulls and being used: think, discuss with you homeland people openly and then act.
Do not demonstrate your ignorance even to demand those plans you "demonstrate" from your "Demo leaders". It's easy to put a house on fire to get more "light".
Demonstrators better be responcible act on that, or be dealt like hippy were dealt with and Chicago demonstrations at their times (shot and killed). Do business or work, and discuss openly.

Haven't they got the news that the soviet union is gone already?

3 months ago, subway bombing in Minsk. Remember universally accepted theories and predictions? Lukashenko did it himself. The arrested will be tortured in order to extract the names of his political opponets as conspirators and use it as a a pretext to crush the opposition. So far only the three perpetrators, none of them a politician, have been detained. The Belarus KGB should learn to how to use waterboarding.

Why is west always trying to interfer is matters of people of Rus? Yes it would be better for White Russia to reunite with mother Russia. Belarus KGB can retrain motherland on how to deal with Chechen animals, and motherland can help white Russia with economic model. It is win win for all people of Rus.

Why is it that these repressive governments always talk about how 'social harmony' has been threatened and then arrest those they say are responsible instead of looking into their own black souls for the reason they are not liked?

I wonder how well an American would be received in Russia coming not as a Democrat, Republican, or a Capitalist.
