Believers In Mysterious Planet Nibiru Await Earth's End

Renowned astrophysicist Carl Sagan once described a "baloney detection kit" — a set of tools that skeptical thinkers use to investigate any new concept. A few of the key tools include a healthy distrust of information that isn't independently verified, critically assessing an idea rather than becoming irrationally attached to it simply because it's intriguing, and a preference for simple explanations over wildly speculative ones.

The waxing obsession with the planet Nibiru , which conspiracy theorists say is a planet swinging in from the outskirts of our solar system that is going to crash into Earth and wipe out humanity in 2012 — or, in some opinions, 2011 — shows that an astonishing number of people "are watching YouTube videos and visiting slick websites with nothing in their skeptical toolkit," in the words of David Morrison, a planetary astronomer at NASA Ames Research Center and senior scientist at the NASA Astrobiology Institute.

Morrison estimates that there are 2 million websites discussing the impending Nibiru-Earth collision.  He receives, on average, five email inquiries about Nibiru every day.

"At least a once a week I get a message from a young person — as young as 11 — who says they are ill and/or contemplating suicide because of the coming doomsday," Morrison told Life's Little Mysteries, a sister site to SPACE.com.

What's the origin of this mass panic about Nibiru, which astronomers say doesn't exist?

    A suspect origin

The idea that doomsday will result from a planetary collision was first proposed in 1995 by Nancy Lieder, a self-described "contactee." Lieder claims she has the ability to receive messages through an implant in her brain from aliens in the Zeta Reticuli star system. On her website, ZetaTalk, she stated that she was chosen to warn mankind of an impending planetary collision which would wipe out humanity in May 2003. (When no such cataclysmic event occurred, Lieder's followers chose 2012 as the new date for the Nibiru collision, which coincides neatly with other doomsday prophecies focused on the ending of the Mayan calendar.) [Doomsday Facts (or Fictions)]

Lieder originally called the bringer of doom "Planet X," and later connected it to a planet that was hypothesized to exist by a writer named Zecharia Sitchin in his book "The 12th Planet" (Harper 1976). According to Sitchin (1920-2010), the ancient Sumerians wrote about a giant planet called Nibiru — the "twelfth planet" in the solar system, after the other planets (including Pluto), the sun and moon — which has an oblong orbit that swings near Earth every 3,600 years. Humans actually evolved on Nibiru, he said, and colonized this planet during a previous flyby.

Historians and language scholars say that Stitchin grossly mistranslated ancient texts. The Sumerians did indeed believe in a cosmology involving planets; however they thought there were five planets, not 12, and they did not believe that humans hopped to Earth from a place called Nibiru. Furthermore, astronomers have pointed out that a planetary orbit like the one Sitchin proposed for Nibiru is impossible: No celestial body could maintain a stable orbit that swings it through the inner solar system every 3,600 years and keeps it beyond Pluto the rest of the time. The body would quickly get sucked in or pushed out.

Nonetheless, Sitchin's books have been translated into 25 languages and sold millions of copies worldwide. Lieder's planetary collision theory has adopted the name of Nibiru for Earth's planetary nemesis. Many people who believe that doomsday will occur when the Mayan calendar ends in 2012 have adopted Lieder's Nibiru collision prophecy as the cataclysm that will bring us to that end.

    Missing planet

The biggest missing link in the doomsday prophecy is Nibiru itself. Because no giant, rogue planet has been found in the outer solar system to play the role of Nibiru, some conspiracy theorists have decided that a small comet called Elenin (which will pass nearest Earth in October 2011) is actually Nibiru. Even then, though, scientists say Elenin will come no closer than 100 times farther than the distance from Earth to the moon. [What If Our Solar System  Formed Closer to Milky Way's Edge?]

"The fact is that these folks are constantly changing their story," Morrison wrote in an email. "For some, Nibiru is no longer the Sumerian god or planet that is supposed to be returning to Earth in late 2012. It has become a catchword for almost any cosmic catastrophe."

Internet rumors about Elenin began spreading earlier this year. Its approach to Earth was blamed for shifting the Earth's axis by 3 degrees in February, precipitating the Chile earthquake, then shifting the pole even more to trigger the Japan quake in March. "Ignoring plate tectonics as the cause of earthquakes, they suggest that the comet exerted strong gravitational or electromagnetic effects on our planet," Morrison wrote.

When scientists pointed out that the comet is a mere 3-mile-wide glob of ice with no magnetic field and that it won't even pass very near Earth — and that plate tectonics, not comets, cause earthquakes — rumors began to circulate that NASA was withholding information about Elenin.

"Ironically, the inconspicuous nature of this comet plays into some of the conspiracy theories," Morrison pointed out. "For people who are convinced the comet did cause the earthquakes, this proves that Elenin is not a comet at all, but a much more massive, and dangerous, interloper." Conspiracy theorists began speculating that the comet is Nibiru in disguise — a planet or even an enormous brown dwarf star.

In fact, Elenin is a textbook comet; it has visible "coma," or nucleus, and a long tail made of vaporizing ice. [What's the Difference Between an Asteroid and a Comet?]

If it were a brown dwarf, "it would not have a coma or tail, because the gas cannot escape from an object with substantial gravity. In addition, if it were massive we would be seeing its gravitational influence on the orbits of the planets, especially Mars and Earth, but there is no change in these orbits," Morrison wrote. "Finally, if it were a brown dwarf it would have been easily detected in various previous astronomical surveys, including the recent WISE infrared mission, even when it was still in the outer solar system," he wrote.

The fact that the comet isn't headed our way is overlooked by most conspiracy theorists, while others say its path is going to change. "[Some] websites suggest that the comet is accompanied by a giant UFO, which controls its orbit," Morrison told us; in effect, who cares if Elenin doesn't seem to be headed in our direction — it'll be steered here.

    Distinguishing truth from lies

Morrison offered some advice to those who are interested in astronomy or are worried about impending collisions. "If it [a story] is real, it is likely to be in regular news media, not just posted on some website," he told us. Furthermore, "not everyone who claims on YouTube to be a scientist or an employee of NASA is. But there is no simple way to distinguish truth from lies."

The Nibiru conspiracies are so nonsensical that Morrison wonders whether even their purveyors believe them. Because many websites sell Nibiru books, tapes and even "survival kits," Morrison thinks they are purposely taking advantage of people who aren't able to distinguish credible sources from crackpot ones. "This is especially a problem for young people, which is why I am so angry at those who target children," he said.

No1. the Mayan calander never says that the world would end in Dec. of 2012. They believed that the world went thu stages, then would move to the next phase. They believed we were in the 4th phase that would end in 2012. And the new phase (#5) would begin. We can see this in our weather changes etc.And if there is a big a big planet out there nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbbb

Of coarse, they would never come right out and announce it. But all the information is available to come to your own conclusion. If you have reviewed all the evidence and decided, there is nothing to be concerned about, then good for you. But I suspect most of you just dismiss it blindly and wishfully, because even if they came right out and told you, you would have no idea what to do. And so you mock those who might try to warn you, and hope they don't get the last laugh.

      ok folks
1- do you REALLY think the public would be told - "hey we found a huge friggin planet that will be coming around in a yr and have no idea what to expect"..?? a year beforehand? yah kinda have the planet in a tizzy no?
2- I love the "Historians and translators( no names of course)" indicate that Sitchin ( not Stichin btw) is wrong etc.. yet he is of only 4! yah FOUR translators looking at this and studying it for 40 yrs...Oh and btw- NOT taught in schools anywhere
And as for Morrison?? - Yah do i even have to explain his position
Truth is - probably out there...360K timeline...and they have NO idea what to expect from it
      • Glowby 10 mths ago
Phil - There are thousands of amateur astronomers with scopes that could detect this thing. Do you REALLY think they could be hushed? You're living in a '50s sci-fi world, where only the military can look deep into space; which wasn't true even in the '50s.

        SNAP OUT OF IT

Google: what the..?? group of planets--------- the two youtube vids from 4 and 5 days ago------Glowby- not everyone can afford an infrared telescope for deep space exploration. Another thing, this thing is already here and was only visible from the south pole. So, go get yourself a telescope, and see if you can't find it for yourself. The coordinates can be found on the internet.

"not everyone can afford an infrared telescope for deep space exploration"
You wouldn't need one. If it's as big as they say, there would be a variety of evidences for it.

It's urban legend, pure and simple.
    • Gabriel  •  10 mths ago
DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH, MAKE YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS, JUST DONT BE LIKE THE REST OF AMERICANS AND LET THE MAINSTRREAM MEDIA MAKE THE DECISION FOR YOU.. BE A HERDER, NOT A SHEEP.. IF NIBIRU IS REAL WOULD THE GOVERNMENT TELL US ABOUT IT??? NO.. THEY KNOW IT WOULD CAUSE MASS PANIC AND HYSTERIA, LEADING TO A QUICK CRASH OF THE ECONOMY, ETC.. JUST DONT BE THAT MUCH OF A SUCKER TO BELIEVE EVERYTHING THAT NASA OR YAHOO TELLS YOU.. QUESTION EVERYTHING. BELIEVE IN THE BIBLE? NIBIRU IS WORMWOOD.

To me this indicates two things, a lot of people who are really unhappy with their lives and wish it would end quickly but not by their own hand and a few people that enjoy power over the former.

It's about money...that fellow that predicted the end of the world in May raked in US$72 Million
      • Qualia 10 mths ago
Sometimes it's not about the money, it's about the adulation and attention. Imagine, standing up in front of a crowd, everything you speak is nonsense but there are all these people soaking up every word and treating you like god, too powerful an attraction for some.

I think the argument is that a Brown Dwarf would difficult to see since it would absorb light due to its immense gravity and mass. Go find a picture of a Brown Dwarf and you will see. Also, the comet Elenin is already past Mars' orbit nearing Earth's (and you still can't find any pictures of it). Go to Nasa and go see Elenin's trajectory. It has been in alignment with the Earth and the Sun during the last few major earthquakes. Ameteur astronomers have detected a massive object and you can see it at google sky using an infrared filter. Something is going on, maybe not Niburu but why are millions of animals dying around the world with no explanation (even before the radiation leak)? Why has volcanic activity recently increased? Why is there a large increase UFO sightings all over the world even being covered by the mainstream media. Why are we getting a record number of tornados. Why has solar activity spiked? Why has the wind and storm activity increased 20% recently? Something is to blame and it's not CO2 emissions. Anyone who has been paying attention is just reacting in worry for the safety of their loved ones, not to feed their need for conspiracy news.

In 1983, planet x was discovered using an orbiting telescope known as the infrared astronomical observatory (IRAS). In a 1983 washington post article, Dr. Gerry Neugebauer, IRAS chief at the NASA jet propulsion labratory in california, is quoted as saying, "all I can tell you is that we don't know what it is." Dr Jame Hauck, a member of the IRAS science team said, "whatever it is, the mystery body is so cold it's temperature is no more than 40 degrees above absolute zero."
A few other stories on this were published, including one in U.S.News that I recall reading in highschool. Then it all but disappeared. In 1993, Myles Standish,a planetary scientist with the NASA jet propulsion labratory, said there was no evidence of the existence of planet x, based on the orbits of Uranus and Neptune, with disregard to the previous IRAS findings in 1983. Robert Harrington of the U.S. Naval Observatory in Washington, D. C., had been searching for planet x and believed it could be found in the southern sky, but his work was ended when he was denied access to a telescope in the southern hemisphere, to continue his research. So there you have the FACTS. Nothing about a wacko with a brain implant. NASA said it was there. NASA said it was not, and that's the end of it, because NASA said so. But no, according to a story from CNN earlier this year, scientist expect to find planet x in the next 2 years. This is the kind of stuff that conspiracy theories are made of. People who hear of planet x from this piece of crap on yahoo and instantly dismiss it are the ones that are so easily misinformed, not the believers, in my opinion.
      • Glowby 10 mths ago
If Nibiru/planet x was out there, THOUSANDS of amateur astronomers all over the world could detect it, and nobody could possibly cover it up.
It's a VERY lame conspiracy theory. (Pitiful, actually)
      • Kirstin 10 mths ago
If you were actually PAYING ATTENTION to what the IRAS team was doing, you would know that the reports didn't disappear; they were studied in more detail and the previously unidentified IR sources were all correlated with known objects -- very distant known objects, in fact. If you observe long enough, you can work parallax measures on these observations, and that tells you they're waaaaay too far off to be a tenth planet.
      • k 10 mths ago
Feb. 15th 2011---"Evidence is mounting that either a brown dwarf star or a gas giant planet is lurking at the outermost reaches of our solar system, far beyond Pluto. The theoretical object, dubbed Tyche, is estimated to be four times the size of Jupiter and 15,000 times farther from the sun than Earth", according to a story in the British paper The Independent." So why haven't thousands of ameteaur astronemers found it?

Ok, take your fake, man corrupted religions designed to control and condemn all those who do not believe as you do, and shove them up your collective Niburu butts. After intensly studying comparative religions for the last 35 years I have come to the following conclusions.

      1. While there may have been an ultimate creator, I feel it was the Big Bang, not some man with long flowing robes and white beard who created this.

      2. While Jesus of Nazareth may have been a real person, Christians have used this mans message to slaughter and butcher millions of people in the name of their peaceful and loving religion. Out of all the religions in the world, the Christian religion has more innocent blood on it's hands than all the other religions COMBINED, and this includes the Muslim religion.

      3. 98.6% of all Christians are total and absolute psychotics, meglomaniacs and two faced losers. Or as Tonto used to tell the Lone Ranger: They speak with forked tongues. They proclaim the message of Jesus Christ to be one of love and forgiveness, but where is their love and forgiveness? They condemn anyone to an eternity in hell telling us their bible tells them this, if you are NOT one of them. Of course their forked tongue comes from telling us they are not condemning us to hell but their God is...yet they think they can speak for their own God in who deserves an eternity in hell. They always seem to twist the judge not lest ye be judged rule by stating they are not judging us, but their bible is. They failed to heed the passage where Jesus himself said DO NOT BOW DOWN AND WORSHIP ME BUT WORSHIP MY FATHER WHICH IS IN HEAVEN, and built a whole religion on worshipping this Jesus. They condemn same sex marriage as wrong in the eyes of their God and evil, yet straight marriage is the best, cause their God tells them this. Yet if marriage is so freaking sacred with them, why is the divorce rate over 50%, that many christians cheat on their spouses, that many are also closet gays and lesbians only to be busted in some National Inquirer type scandal.

I could go on but you get my point. Yet here is my final closing argument taken right from their own bible. "Many shall call me Lord, Lord, but I shall say to them get thee behind me for I know you not."
      • real truth 10 mths ago
        I agree.
      • PGH 10 mths ago
Right on Frank. It's all man made nonsense designed to control people. No creator made the entire universe so expansive it's beyond our comprehension, countless species evolving over billions of years, all so the pope could tell people not to play with themselves.

It's all fake. Concentrate on reality and we'll all be better off.
      • real truth 10 mths ago
"I will pray for you even though you hate me because I am a Christian and you hate me I love you brother."

It's the other way around. We don't hate Christians;Christians hate us.
We just wish you'd stop screwing up the world and snap back to reality and not be so willfully ignorant.

I like to see more articles like this. It's good to shine a bright light on the loonies. Too many naive people fall for the crazy ideas of the tinfoil hat crowd, and worry themselves unnecessarily. We see it happen over and over. We've got to shout the crackpots down from time to time.
      • k 10 mths ago
Articles like this only fan the flames. The overwhelming majority of the Nibiru/ Planet X believers don't believe Nancy Lieder, and David Morrison, the most obvious choice head a dis-information campaign, goes to far in attempting to vilify anyone who questions his assertions..
    • Jp  •  10 mths ago
Great article, thank you. I would like to add my two cents if you don't mind. First it should be said those scholars who feel they have debunked Sitchin's work, well they are mostly of the Religious historian types. Which is cool, hey it is fact that those types are well known to be icons for open mindedness. Either way pretty tricky thing I would think deciphering a dead language. What's that 1st paragraph of yours say again. Funny us humans how we all lean towards the "experts" that rhyme our reason.

Theory of mine on how those guys came up with the number five. Twelve, that's already been taken. How about five that sits better in the realm of those crazy Sumerian Pagan Gods. Still 12 or 5, I mean that's a big difference. If I could throw my guess on what number system the Sumerian's where based. How about 42. None of my guesses ever are original. Deal with it.

As for Sitchin's 12th planet; great book. Now I agree a planet in such an orbit of 3,600 years seems very unlikely. Yet, if you look past his rhyme. He does have some excellent knowledge of the known past civilizations of our planet, and he raises some seriously big questions of their knowledge. At least in my silly twisted opinion.

Lastly death. Deal with it. If makes you feel better you knowing the time of your demise by some dooms day theory. I say run with it. Me I'll just be happy if when I die, I can get through it alive.

Funny thing is that this is actually going to happen and they aren't telling you about it. Whether it's now or in the future is irrelevant... But judging by the US spending so much money on D.U.M.B's (deep underground military bases), I wouldn't be surprised.

why my bird is upset and why she is looking to me and concerned?i seen her jumbing the one hand to another, what happening?Something Not Normal?I asked a'll die?she did not denied or confirmed,I asked her to show me what's going to be?suddenly I found that are on earth and in orbit while one eye predict the ground and another predicted from orbit, what to see?Why this is her? this not the moon that I know , but this is more big than the moon , loud noises very strong vibrations,I feel like I'm frozen, suddenly i m very hungry.i m loosing my energy.this is what i had seen from the orbit, but what i seen from the land is more fear and hard to imagine
this object power, we as human We can not imagine the force of this object ,force of attraction,Centripetal force, centrifugal force ,yes this one is very very strong imagine a water column width of 500 km or more, imagine a water column with length up to sky ,imagine to see the ocean floor,I wondered how bird calls this object.the response was NI.....I asked if this object is controlled by extra terrestrialI entity ?affirmative response, and to begin to draw their form, show as an anchor 1,50, have a force that can change to any color to be translucent, transparent but are only certain brain ,just brains. that was not a dream.it was a direct transmission from the future. My desire is that I can sleep .God Bless our earth.

Ladies and gentlemen, trust me when I say this that I am going to be laughing my $%$ off once December 21, 2012 passes and nothing happens but then again the talk about 2012 has been around more than the Y2K so who knows what will happen. Though most likely people will be spending those last few days before Christmas buying presents than worrying about the world ending. Also, the talk about the end of the world is going to increase more and more throughout 2011 until they are going to show those 2012/Nostradamus specials on History every week or every day in 2012.
