    Bermuda: Tourists up by 12 percent in 2011

    HAMILTON, Bermuda (AP) — Bermuda says the number of tourists coming to the wealthy British dependency increased by 12 percent last year compared to the previous year.

    Tourism Minister Wayne Furbert says 655,236 visitors came to Bermuda in 2011, the second highest in the Atlantic territory's history.

    Government figures show that cruise ship visitors were up 19 percent and air arrivals rose by roughly 2 percent with 236,038 tourists flying to the territory.

    Bermuda has long been popular with tourists for its pink sand beaches and with businesspeople as an offshore financial haven. But the 2008 financial crisis took a bite out of Bermuda tourism.

    Furbert released 2011 tourism statistics Monday.
