Best Battles in New Comics: 1/23/15

Hey, thanks for taking some time to check out the latest and oh-so-awesome edition of Best Battles in New Comics. This week, we're highlighting new action scenes from Marvel, DC, and Valiant. Want funny, over-the-top action? Maybe some crazy stuff out of a huge story? Or how about a nice look at some of Valiant's coolest characters fighting a ridiculously creepy enemy? Well, that's exactly what you're going to get! If your favorite new battle isn't below, go ahead and give it some love in the comments. Now, let's check out some glorious action scenes!

BATMAN AND ROBIN #38

The first highlight is taken from Peter J. Tomasi, Patrick Gleason, Mick Gray and John Kalisz's latest issue of BATMAN AND ROBIN. Why is it being included, you ask? It may be short, but it's the Dynamic Duo's return to the streets of Gotham. That's a bit of a big deal and it's presented in a mighty fun way. Not only has the Dark Knight brought his son back to life, but the wee lad now has superpowers, too! If you think Damian was already arrogant enough, just imagine what returning from the dead and being crazy powerful will do to his confidence. But before we chime in on Damian, let's take a look at Batman doing what he does best: Kicking and punching criminals really, really hard.

Watching the Caped Crusader obliterate goons is always good fun -- especially when it's being presented by Gleason, Gray and Kalisz -- but that isn't the reason why this sequence is getting a highlight spot. The reason is because of his kid, Damian. Now, we saw Damian discover some of his new abilities while fighting Kalibak, but now that he's adjusted to some of these powers, it's time to see how he unleashes against the low level bad guys. The creative team sure knows how to give Robin an attention-grabbing introduction.

Awesome, right? We're just going to assume a majority of you agree with us on that one. While Batman has a focused expression on his face, the art team makes it crystal clear that Damian is happy to be back and loving the fact that bullets are no match for his newfound durability. You can't help but love how his expression once again changes when he finally gets right next to the criminal. He's totally relishing every second of this.

As you can likely guess from that last panel, Batman probably isn't 100% cool with the way Damian's using his new abilities. While Bruce's struggle to be a proper mentor and father is put on display, a good portion of this issue is dedicated to giving us a great insight into Damian. Don't miss this one if you're a Damian fan or simply interested in what's going on in Batman's world. Yeah, we're going to guess that's a good amount of you.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #13

Now we'll take you into the latest chapter of Spider-Verse! In Dan Slott, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Cam Smith and Justin Ponsor's issue, there's a good amount of buildup and focus on character before some Spiders leap back into action and things get especially crazy. Now, the reason this has made the cut is because it includes a jaw-dropping sequence with Kaine, but before that goes down on Loomworld, it turns out there's another brawl taking place on the planet! Silk, Spider-Gwen and Spider-Woman are in a whole lot of trouble. It doesn't help that Silk's teleporter is damaged again!

As the trio struggles against the swarm of enemies, Kaine is bringing the fight to the Inheritors. He's out for blood and has let the Other take control. We won't tell you why he's so upset, but we will show you just how absurdly dangerous the Other is! Morlun and his family are immensely powerful, but when Kaine lets loose, it's a huge challenge even for them. They've been getting used to walking all over their opponents, so to suddenly face an uphill struggle is a big surprise.

If you've been following Spider-Verse, odds are you know by now that Lord Solus is a very, very powerful dude. But against the Other? Even he's going to have trouble. Unfortunately for him (and fortunately for team Spider), the guy is overcome by joy and anticipation when he sees his daunting enemy. At last! A true challenge! Yeah, it's just too bad it's a short-lived one for you, Solus. See, this is why you need to spend less time monologuing, villains.

Is the big guy down for the count and does Kaine go own to wreck the other Inheritors that are in his way? We won't spoil it for you, but will will promote the fact there's a very interesting twist revealed about Earth-3145 and the handling of its Spider-Man is definitely one of the biggest selling points of this issue. It'll surprise you, that's for sure.

THE VALIANT #2

Okay, let's take a trip to Valiant's excellent, evergrowing universe. Jeff Lemire, Matt Kindt, Paolo Rivera and Joe Rivera's second chapter of the publisher's latest limited series is all kinds of great and even has an especially great action scene! All you need to know is there's this very frightening villain called the Immortal Enemy and, throughout the years, the Eternal Warrior has been unable to stop it from killing Geomancers. There's more to it, obviously, and the first chapter made sure it was very new reader friendly. Even this second one has a thorough introduction page. But we're not here to talk about the narrative. No, sir! We're here to discuss all of the magnificent chaos, so a splash page of Eternal Warrior landing a THOOM-worthy hit is a fitting way to begin.

Every time Eternal Warrior faced the horrifying villain, he's suffered a humiliating defeat. However, this time is different. No, he didn't bring crazy new weapons to the fight or anything like that. Instead, he brought very dangerous friends. Ninjak is basically the ultimate badass in the Valiant universe, but even he has trouble as the Immortal Enemy invades the assassin's mind and makes him experience his worst fear. Ninjak is able to overcome (because he's awesome like that), but when a mental attack fails, the Immortal Enemy has no problem switching to physical attacks.

Despite being hugely skilled combatants, the foe is able to smack both of them aside and continues to chase Geomancer. Luckily for her, she runs into another character who's an amazing combatant and also wants to save her: Bloodshot. That's right, this issue delivered an extremely cool battle sequence with Eternal Warrior, Ninjak and Bloodshot. And this is just the second issue of the limited series! Anyway, let's see how Bloodshot fares against this seemingly unstoppable fiend.

Does the second chapter take a dark turn and the Immortal Enemy succeeds yet again? If not, how does this group hope to stop or even just slow down the threat? This limited series is as new reader friendly as it gets and it shows off quite a few corners of the Valiant universe, so do yourself a favor and give it a read. With a cast and creative team like this, how can you not at least consider giving it a shot?
