  • Rick Ross "Sorry" f/ Chris Brown

    Release Date: October 6, 2015
    Album: Black Market
    Producer: Scott Storch
    Label: Def Jam Records/MMG

This Rick Ross lead single featuring Chris Brown feels rather like a Chris Brown single featuring Rick Ross; a "New Flame" b-side and "Aston Martin Music" redux. "Sorry" is the rare and precious moment in which a mid-career Rick Ross has finally, profitably dialed down the pugilistic shout-rapping of "B.M.F.," "Box Chevy," and Hood Billionaire in favor of the slick, discursive flow that made Deeper Than Rap and later rarities like "Amsterdam" feel so premium and endearing. Believe it or not, Scott Storch produced this exceptionally tender hit for winter's quarrelsome cuddlers. - Justin Charity

  • Kelela "All the Way Down"

    Release Date: Oct. 9th, 2015
    Album: Hallucinogen EP
    Producer: DJ Dahi
    Label: Warp / Cherry Coffee

Kelela's slick Hallucinogen EP finds the D.C.-based artist slinging the principles of old school R&B into an ethereal and heavily reverberated future. It's apex, the DJ Dahi-produced "All The Way Down", is an icy kiss-off to the cerebral hesitance that threatens raw emotion. "The only way to sum it up is falling roller coaster rush" she coos over descending synths. It's a thrill ride that's over far too soon. - Sal Maicki

  • Young Dolph "No Matter What" f/ T.I.

    Release Date: Oct. 8th, 2015
    Album: Shittin' on the Industry
    Producer: TM88
    Label: N/A

On "No Matter What", a highlight from Young Dolph's Shittin' On The Industry mixtape, the Memphis rapper declares his resiliency to stay caked up. Complete with a thick trap production from TM88 and a guest verse from T.I., it's the track that'll keep you bumping through the rest of this long work week. - Sal Maicki

  • Erykah Badu "Hotline Bling (Remix)"

    Release Date: Sept. 25, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Nineteen85
    Label: N/A

Just as "Hotline Bling" is nearing its peak of greatness, Erykah Badu decided to make the world stop with her own version of the song. The dreamy remix, co-written by her and Andre 3000’s son, Seven Benjamin, gives the Dallas songstress space to stretch out the delightful broodiness of Drizzy’s original serenade past the seven-minute mark without once feeling redundant. It’s sultry, slinky, and the perfect antidote for any Hurricane Joaquin-related chills. —Sal Maicki

  • Gucci Mane "Orange"

    Release Date: Sept. 29, 2015
    Album: Upcoming film: The Spot
    Producer: Honorable C.N.O.T.E.
    Label: Atlantic Records

Being locked up doesn't stop Gucci Mane from releasing a fire track. Produced by Honorable C.N.O.T.E, the Atlanta native dropped "Orange" a few days ago. A fuzzy beat sounds like it's emanating from a blown speaker while Gucci spits bars like "They be dumb stupid bad, with that crazy Gucci bag." You get what you expect from Gucci—lyrics that confuse you alongside beats that bump. Gucci Mane does not disappoint. Roll yourself a blunt and find some headphones or speakers. Seems like jail's doing Gucci some musical justice. —Ishani Desai

  • Shy Glizzy "No Sleep"

    Release Date: Sept. 30, 2015
    Album: For Trappers Only
    Producer: Zaytoven
    Label: N/A

As far as Zaytoven beats go, "No Sleep" is primitive and somewhat like a morning cartoon in its up-tempo exuberance. Like Future's "Just Like Bruddas," also produced by Zaytoven, "No Sleep" is a live wire; Shy Glizzy and the beat are effectively zapping at one another, and the ensuing duel is Ed Elrich vs. Greed, pretty much. Zaytoven produced all of Shy Glizzy's latest mixtape, For Trappers Only, which we'll likely have more to say about next week. —Justin Charity

  • Empire Cast f/ Jussie Smollett "Sorry Just Don't Cut It"

    Release Date: Sept. 30, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: N/A
    Label: Sony Music Entertainment

Since January, FOX has aired 14 episodes of its hit record label drama, Empire. The latest episode, "Without a Country," has the highest saturation of truly good songs of any episode yet. My editor, Damien Scott, and I disagree in deciding which song is the episode's best ("Snitch Bitch," aside). "Sorry Just Don't Cut It," which the character Jamal resentfully dedicates to his brother, Hakeem, is a rare contemporary gesture from a show that otherwise sounds like 2002. Here we have an effective synthesis of peak Ne-Yo and Drake circa Take Care. Finally, Lee Daniels is making full and proper use of Jussie Smollett's voice, which is good for more than camp and melodrama. —Justin Charity

  • Katie Got Bandz f/ Jeremih and Chi Hoover "Make Me Rich"

    Release Date: Sept. 30, 2015
    Album: Drillary Clinton 3
    Producer: N/A
    Label: N/A

Katie Got Bandz gets a savage boost from Jeremih on “Make Me Rich," the first taste of the drill queen’s forthcoming Drillary Clinton 3 project. The track finds the Chicago MCs spitting about the game of opulence over a booming beat between a warbled hook from Chi Hoover. It’s as unhinged as anything we’ve come to expect from Katie, and we can’t get enough. —Sal Maicki

  • Fetty Wap “Jugg" f/ Monty

    Release Date: Sept. 25, 2015
    Album: Fetty Wap
    Producer: Salik Singletary
    Label: 300 Entertainment/RGF Productions

Fetty is at peak-Fetty on “Jugg,” a saccharine romp that works as a continuation of sorts on the drug slinging romance that “Trap Queen” had us wrapped up this past summer. “I’m like, ‘baby how you doin’ ayy/I’m tryna roll with you, ayy ayy” he wails on the chorus, meddled by sticky sweet autotune. Though nothing particularly new from the Jersey based rapper, it’s ridiculously catchy, and earnest enough to keep us locked in for the next chapter of his jugged up love story. —Sal Maicki

  • Youth Lagoon “Free Me”

    Release Date: Sept. 25, 2015
    Album: Savage Hills Ballroom
    Producer: Trevor Powers, Ali Chant
    Label: Fat Possum Records

Trevor Powers’ third LP as Youth Lagoon, Savage Hills Ballroom, finds the twenty-six year old grappling with the same existential complications as his first two projects; this time, however, the watercolors are saturated and his emotions are more tangible than ever before. This is none so apparent than on the penultimate odyssey, “Free Me,” where Powers’ begs for emancipation from the heaviness on his shoulders over a swelling bass line. It’s the perfect culminating soundtrack for a 4 a.m. night drive with no clear destination. Sal Maicki

  • CHVRCHES “Keep You On My Side”

    Release Date: Sept. 25, 2015
    Album: Every Open Eye
Producer: Iain Cook, Martin Doherty, Lauren Mayberry
    Label: Glassnote Entertainment Group

CHVRCHES dropped their fantastic sophomore LP Every Open Eye today, solidifying the Scottish trio as a force to be reckoned with when it comes to crafting spectacular synthpop anthems. “Keep You On My Side” pulsates with the anxiety that anyone who has ever grasped at the threads of a relationship knows all too well. Stomping synth lines from Iain Cook and Martin Doherty make way for lead singer Lauren Mayberry to invert the situational vulnerability into a powerful rally cry for those ready to put up a fight for love. Sal Maicki

  • Drake & Future “Diamonds Dancing”

    Release Date: Sept. 20, 2015
Album: What A Time To Be Alive
Producer: Metro Boomin, Allen Ritter, Frank Dukes
    Label: Cash Money Records/Epic Records

The crown jewel of Drake and Future’s highly anticipated What A Time To Be Alive proves its reference on the mixtape’s cover art to be well earned. “Diamonds Dancing” drifts between a full-blown club banger and a meditation on the perils of excessiveness. During its peak moments, it’s a pristine justification of the weeks of hype leading up to the mixtape’s Sunday release. The highs are all too fleeting, though, as Drizzy warbles off about someone doing him dirty towards the back end of the track. While we all wonder who’s done him wrong (could it be Nicki? Rih?), Metro’s icy instrumentals continue to glide into catharsis, and suddenly whatever has been dirtied feels glistening clean again. Sal Maicki

  • Lana Del Rey "Music To Watch Boys To"

    Release Date: Sept. 18, 2015
    Album: Honeymoon
    Producers: Rick Nowels, Kieron Menzies
    Label: Polydor/Interscope

Like any Lana Del Rey album, the build-up to her fourth studio album Honeymoon has been brimming with anticipation as fans sucked up every atmospheric, mood-soaked drop ahead of the release. After an early taste in her album trailer, "Music To Watch Boys To" has cooly stormed to the front of the pack as an early album favorite. In signature Lana form, she sings of love and longing, playing into his wishes and hoping he sticks around. On a bed of inebriated production, Lana wills us to sway along, crooning "Live to love you/And I love to love you" before claiming control stating "It's all a game to me." Catchy enough to sink into your ears, it's fated to lull you back into Lana's woozy, romantic world. —Jessie Morris

  • Young Thug "Best Friend"

    Release Date: Sept. 14, 2015
    Album: Slime Season
    Producer: Ricky Racks
    Label: 300

Young Thug is many things, but most importantly, he's his own best friend and he took fans on a weird, wild ride to explain in the video for his latest track/video. On the Ricky Racks-produced "Best Friend," Thugger amps himself up in a way that can only really be described by watching the insane visuals, in which he takes on so many different personas but in the end, is always just himself. It's off Slime Season which is out now. —Lauren Nostro

  • Rick Ross "Work"

    Release Date: Sept. 15, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Jahlil Beats
    Label: MMG

Fresh off of the release of his Black Dollar mixtape last week, Rick Ross comes through with a bouncy new single on "Work." With bright and flashy production from Jahlil Beats, he spits about making it work even if he has to "take my shirt off and flex my abs like Tupac." All threats aside, Rozay's got what you need to get through that weekday grind. — Sal Maicki

  • Jay Rock "Vice City" f/ Black Hippy

    Release Date: Sept. 11, 2015
    Album: 90059
    Producer: Anthony "Top Dawg" Tiffith
    Label: Top Dawg Entertainment

Black Hippy’s back and better than ever with their “big money” and “big booty bitches” on Jay Rock’s single “Vice City." Jay, Kendrick, ScHoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul all come with some hard hitting bars and soliloquy after soliloquy. The theatrical accompanying video shows all of TDE going bar for bar at one another. “I’m more spiritual than lyrical I’m similar to Eli… Why? Cause I’m wearin black shades”. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the lyrical sounds of TDE on "Vice City." —Ishani Desai

  • Ty Dolla $ign "When I See Ya" f/ Fetty Wap

    Release Date: Sept. 10, 2015
    Album: Free TC
    Producer: Cardo & Johnny Julio
    Label: Atlantic Records

Hit makers Ty Dolla $ign and Fetty Wap joined forces on Ty’s new single “When I See Ya,” a smooth R&B joint produced by Cardo and Johnny Julio. Ty serenades his girl into the bedroom and keeps it to the point with straight-forward lines—We gon’ f**k when I see ya—while Fetty delivers a heartfelt ode to his chick towards the end of the song. —Ishani Desai

  • Tinashe "Party Favors" f/ Young Thug

    Release Date: Sept. 9th, 2015
    Album: Joyride
Producer: Allen Ritter, Illangelo, Boi-1da, Vinylz
    Label: RCA Records

Tinashe’s going back to her Black Water roots with an eerie, hypnotizing new track produced by Allen Ritter & Illangelo, and co-produced by Boi-1da & Vinylz. If you’ve ever been smack dab in the middle of a dark basement club high as hell and feeling yourself, here’s your new theme song. “Party Favors” is a sensual, slow-burning jams ending with a warbled Thugger verse for the first look at her highly anticipated next album, Joyride. More Thugger/Tinashe collabs, please. —Lauren Nostro

  • Raury “Friends" f/ Tom Morello

    Release Date: Sept. 9, 2015
    Album: All We Need
    Producer: N/A
    Label: LVRN/Columbia Records

The closing track on Raury’s forthcoming All We Need LP shows the 19-year-old artist is entirely ready to tackle stadiums in the near future. Taking cues from the “We Are The World”-esque anthems of yesteryear, he backs his call for peace with a children’s choir and a solo from Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello on "Friends." It all evokes nostalgia but never feels stale. When you see him on the inevitable music festival circuit next summer, have your lighter ready for this one. —Sal Maicki

  • Travi$ Scott “Maria I’m Drunk" f/ Justin Bieber and Young Thug

    Release Date: Sept. 4, 2015
    Album: Rodeo
Producer: Frank Dukes, Allen Ritter, Maneesh Bidaye, Mike Dean
    Label: Epic Records

Travi$ Scott, Justin Bieber and Young Thug team up for the booty call anthem of 2015 in “Maria I’m Drunk,” a full-bodied romp in tune with the primal emotions that only tequila can bring out. Frank Dukes, Allen Ritter, Maneesh Bidaye and Mike Dean set the scene for a faded night in LA with a hazy production that cuts thick like smog. After an extended plea for trust, Scott and company make their best case for the night. Whoever Maria is, we’re betting that after Bieber asks for her “on the rocks, no chaser,” she’d be hard pressed to not call her friends. We’ll have what they’re drinking. —Sal Maicki

  • Justin Bieber "What Do You Mean?"

    Release Date: Aug. 28, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Skrillex
    Label: Def Jam

"What Do You Mean?" marks the latest phase of Justin Bieber's ceaseless rebranding: from cute little boy who made "Baby," to crude and troublesome cokehead in Brazil, to tender and repentant cad who sings over Jumanji whistles. In any case, the song is good! Like many good pop songs, it seizes upon a particular, relatable resonance—here it's pre-commital romantic ambiguity—and churns it into a profitable hook. "What Do You Mean?" won't be huge, I don't think, but it's a cute tapering of summer 2015. —Justin Charity

  • GoldLink f/ Louie Lastic "Movin' On"

    Release Date: Aug. 26, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Louie Lastic
    Label: Squaaash Club

GoldLink, a modest darling of the Internet, had never held my attention until this morning, when I clicked a Facebook link to "Movin' On" and immediately got to body-pumping in my desk chair. This one blends 2Pac's "I Get Around" and general, nebulous '80s dark synth influence into a jam that had me feeling like "Housequake." It's jiggy, it's fonky. —Justin Charity

  • The Weeknd f/ Ed Sheeran "Dark Times"

    Release Date: Aug. 27, 2015
    Album: Beauty Behind the Madness
    Producer: Mike Dean
    Label: Republic

While the song's backstory, as told to GQ, might've foreshadowed some ill-conceived playdate of collaborative songwriting, truth is, the finished product is the second-best song on the Weeknd's new album. Truly, Ed Sheeran is with the shits; his hazy opening salvo on "Dark Times" makes a scathing impression. Together, Ed Sheeran and Abel Tesfaye sync harder than Asuka and Shinji on the destrudo-meter. Incredible. —Justin Charity

  • Carly Rae Jepsen "Let's Get Lost"

    Release Date: Aug. 21, 2015
    Album: Emotion
    Producers: Christopher Baran, Ben Romans
    Label: Interscope

Critics are talking me off the ledge that is unqualified, hyperbolic praise of Carly Rae Jepsen's stepping out, but don’t get it twisted: her album is good. It's no pop revolution but its wink-wink innuendo and blunt '80s synth rehashes are all the cheese I could've wanted, really. (Which, coincidentally, is how I wound up feeling about Charli XCX's Sucker.) "Let's Get Lost" fulfills my general desire that every other great pop song should remind me of Mya's "Take You There"; here we are. —Justin Charity

  • Junglepussy "Now or Later"

    Release Date: Aug. 20, 2015
    Album: Pregnant With Success
Producers: Shy Guy, Roc & Mayne
    Label: N/A

In the music video for "Now or Later," Junglepussy is tossing kale and chopping beets whilst rocking a tropical rose bathrobe. I, by vicarious leisure, am moisturized in solidarity. ("Brown skin shining like a pot of gold," she raps.) The beat squeaks like a Tamagotchi, and Junglepussy raps in four-wheel drive, rebuking the thirst of scrubs and the general okie-doke. —Justin Charity

  • YG, Blanco, and DB Tha General "G Thang"

    Release Date: Aug. 19, 2015
    Album: Still Krazy
Producers: Cookin Soul, Jake One, and G Koop
    Label: Def Jam

There’s a lotta fingers in this pot: rappers YG, Blanco, and DB Tha General; and producers Cookin Soul, Jake One, and G Koop. It's surprising, then, that the final product is so streamlined, more so a mellow procession of contributors than a clusterfuck, which I might've expected. I’d been praying for NorCal mack Clyde Carson to break us off with a summer compilation of some sort, but no dice; in any case, “G Thang” is decent consolation. So far, YG’s album singles have amounted to a change of pace, with YG having recruited West Coast jazzman Terrace Martin to produce “Twist My Fingaz,” lead single from the forthcoming Still Krazy. —Justin Charity

  • Young Dro "Ugh"

    Release Date: August 18, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Zaytoven
    Label: E1

Zaytoven: ok how bout I'ma sample the J Timberlake hook from Gone

    Dro: haha

    Zaytoven: *flute emoji*
Zaytoven: "oink oink nigga where the pigs at ponytail niggas speak pig Latin" lmaoo

    Dro: lmaoooooooooo

    Justin Charity

  • Mac Miller "Break the Law"

    Release Date: Aug. 16, 2015
    Album: GO:OD AM
    Producer: N/A
    Label: Warner Bros.

Mac's "100 Grandkids" is a promising first single but it's on "Break The Law," we hear a laidback, melodic anthem that fans have been begging for from Mac. You'll be singing "Get money, fuck the system, break the law," all summer long—until we get that new album. —Lauren Nostro

  • Lana Del Rey "High By the Beach"

    Release Date: August 10, 2015
    Album: Honeymoon
    Producer: N/A
    Label: Interscope

For years, Lana Del Rey has been plagued by criticisms that her actual music falls short of her sultry persona and grandiose ambitions. On “High By the Beach,” though, Lana’s music and image are finally in sync. Breathy and effortless, “High By the Beach” is the kind of single you would expect from an artist who once labeled herself the “gangster Nancy Sinatra.” Like any memorable pop song, “High By the Beach” hits its peak during the hook, where Lana expertly toes the fine line between catchy and repetitive. This, along with the trap-influenced drum beat, clearly marks “High By the Beach” as one of Lana Del Rey’s strongest songs to date. Justin Smith

  • Chance the Rapper "Israel (Sparring)"

    Release Date: August 12, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Cam O'bi
    Label: N/A

Despite having already released a full-length album and a joint mixtape with Lil B earlier this year, Chance the Rapper is back with more new music. While Chance's two most recent projects explored new techniques and instrumentation, this latest release seems to be a return to a more familiar sound. That is to say that “Israel (Sparring)” is more Acid Rap than anything that Chance has dropped recently. On “Israel (Sparring),” Chance is calm and collected, without any of the jazzy frills that characterized Surf. Accompanied by nothing but a simple drum beat, some synths, and a brief assist from Noname Gypsy, the Chicago rapper is just as captivating as ever. To put it simply: Chance is on a roll. Justin Smith

  • Dr. Dre f/ Kendrick Lamar, Marsha Ambrosius & Candice Pillay "Genocide"

    Release Date: August 7, 2015
    Album: Compton
    Producer: Dr. Dre, Focus...
    Label: Aftermath, Interscope

Dr. Dre's Compton might be one of the year's best rap albums. With guest verses from the likes of Kendrick, Snoop, and The Game, Compton plays like a victory lap for the West Coast’s finest. On “Genocide”, one of Compton’s clearest standouts, Dre does an uncanny impression of Kendrick Lamar circa good kid, m.A.A.d city. Snarling and evocative, Dre sounds like a force to be reckoned with. That being said, Kendrick's verse is the real show stopper. With lines like, "Fuck your mama, Fuck your daddy, fuck your dead homie/ Fucked the world up when we came up, that's Compton homie," Kendrick single-handedly elevates "Genocide" from good to great. Justin Smith

  • CyHi The Prynce "Elephant in the Room"

    Release Date: August 5, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: BKS Productions
    Label: N/A

CyHi The Prynce just put out one of the hardest tracks of the summer, “Elephant In the Room.” On it, he goes into detail about shooting up the Def Jam offices, demanding a new million dollar deal and kidnapping Kanye. “You and you by the double doors, (three gunshots) that was three shots and it holds 15 so that means I got a dozen more.” Makes sense, as he was recently cut from Def Jam and pushed infinitely into the shadows of the G.O.O.D. Music roster, too. —David Weiner

  • Kid Cudi "Confused"

    Release Date: August 1, 2015
    Album: Speedin’ Bullet to Heaven
    Producer: Kid Cudi, Plain Pat
Label: Republic Records, Wicked Awesome Records

Kid Cudi channeled his inner teen angst for the first single off of his upcoming album, Speedin’ Bullet to Heaven, “Confused.” In it, Cudder asks the tough questions, “Who am I? Who are we?." Cudder proudly tweeted out that the slightly distorted electric guitar and thumping bass heard on the released track and the rest of the unreleased album were played by himself. The “musical madness,” as he likes to call it, is definitely a different sound from the kid named Cudi. —David Weiner

  • Carly Rae Jepsen "Warm Blood"

    Release Date: July 31, 2015
    Album: E•MO•TION
    Producer: Rostam Batmanglij
    Label: School Boy, Interscope Records

Carly Rae Jepsen already has some hits on her hands with the first couple album singles, “I Really Like You” and “Run Away With Me," off E•MO•TION. Her latest lure, “Warm Blood” produced by Vampire Weekend’s Rostam Batmanglij, taps into a new and intricate techno pop style that helps this single transcend the average commercial pop song. —David Weiner

  • Drake "Back to Back"

    Release Date: July, 29 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: N/A
    Label: OVO Sound

It’s going to be hard to make jokes about Drake after all this beef with Meek gets chewed up and swallowed. Drake fires off a whole clip on the Philly rapper in his second unanswered diss track, “Back to Back,” taking digs at Meeks tour, “Is that a world tour or your girl’s tour” and his use of Twitter to stir up controversy, “Yeah, trigger fingers turn to Twitter fingers. Yeah, you getting bodied by a singin’ n****.” Even the cover art was shade, which features the legendary Joe Carter who helped the Blue Jays win the 1993 World Series over the Phillies. This isn’t just any diss track though; it bumps just as hard as any single. —David Weiner

  • Keith Ape "It G Ma (Remix)" f/ Waka Flocka, Father, and A$AP Ferg

    Release Date: July 27, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Junior Chef
    Label: OWSLA

“It G Ma” was a force in itself but the remix takes Korean rap and Keith Ape to new heights all thanks to a few verses from Waka Flocka, Father and A$AP Ferg. We all knew an American remix was inevitable but between the video, and appearances, the "It G Ma Remix" is a contender for one of the best—and weirdest—songs of the year. —David Weiner.

  • Disclosure "Omen" f/ Sam Smith

    Release Date: July 27, 2015
    Album: Caracal
    Producer: Disclosure
    Label: Island Records

Disclosure and Sam Smith collaborate seamlessly together once again on disclosure’s latest single “Omen” off their upcoming album, Caracal and it’s beautiful. Sam Smith floats effortlessly atop Disclosure’s bouncy, synthpop vibes making for a track that works as both a club banger and piece that could be easily reworked into a soothing acoustic jam, much like their first hit together, “Latch.” Smith and Disclosure are proving themselves to be a winning combination and this latest release will surely be making it’s rounds on YouTube soon enough with amateur remixes and covers. —David Weiner

  • Drake "Hotline Bling"

    Release Date: July 25, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Nineteen85
    Label: OVO Sound

It’s pretty hard to imagine Drizzy having problems with the ladies. “Hotline Bling” is all about an old hook up who’s built herself an image as being a bit of a floozy since the 6 God was with her. Toronto producer, Nineteen85 keeps the record simple, letting the beat drop out every now and then to give Drake some clean air to lay down some uninterrupted, seductive vocals. In the midst of a squabble with Meek Mill, Drake released “Hotline Bling” and a slew of other fresh tracks to add to the long list of OVO newness, letting the people know that he isn’t slowing down anytime soon. —David Weiner

  • Vic Mensa "Codeine Crazy (Icarus Story)"

    Release Date: July 22, 2015
    Album: N/A
Producer: Papi Beatz, Stefan Ponce, Vic Mensa
    Label: Virgin EMI, Roc Nation

This past weekend, Vic Mensa took the stage at the Pitchfork Music Festival and performed a pretty impressive remix of Future's "Codeine Crazy." Now, just a few days later, the official version of Mensa's remix has made its way onto the internet and, thankfully, it's just as dope as the live version. Backed by a couple of fuzzed out guitars and some sparse drums, the Chicago rapper makes the song all his own, reinventing what was already a standout Future track. On Instagram, Mensa described the stripped-down remix as a song that he "wanted everybody to hear." With any luck, this song is just one of many. —Justin Smith

  • Disclosure f/ Brendan Reilly "Moving Mountains"

    Release Date: July 20, 2015
    Album: Caracal
    Producer: Disclosure
    Label: Island

Disclosure's new album Caracal is set for release this fall and it looks the siblings are doing everything they can to feed the hype. After teasing a new collab with Sam Smith, the duo released their new song, "Moving Mountains," on BBC's Radio 1. Featuring soulful vocals from Brendan Reilly, Disclosure's newest track is a washed-out blend of synths and falsetto. The most memorable moment, though, comes in the song's second half when the drums finally hit. "Moving Mountains" might not be the next "Latch" but it's definitely worthy of repeat listening. —Justin Smith

  • Kirko Bangz f/ Fetty Wap "Worry Bout It"

    Release Date: July 20, 2015
    Album: Bigger Than Me
    Producer: N/A

Fetty Wap might have found his next hit. On Kirko Bangz's "Worry Bout It," the two link up for one of Bangz's strongest releases yet. • Young Thug "Pacifier"

    Release Date: July 16, 2015
    Album: Hy!£UN35
    Producer: Mike WiLL Made It
    Label: 300, Atlantic

Young Thug's latest Hy!£UN35 single, "Pacifier," is strange and potentially divisive. Produced by Mike WiLL Made It, the song is inconsistent with both Thugger and Mike WiLL's respective signatures; the trash can snares, synth organ splats, and that guitar riff at that bridge sound rather like the trap configuration of a Maroon 5 song. It works, if only because Young Thug's wail trumps even a beat as polyphonic and deranged as this one. I'd be lying if I told you, upon my tenth full listen, that I understand this song. "Mortified," he says, "I need a Pope, need a coroner!" The hook is the enchanted ravings of a man possessed by demonic libido. As always. —Justin Charity

Reminiscent of Hov and Ye's "New Day," this track is a calmer sound for Rocky, but there are still some high-energy sounds in his verses as he talks about "hitting switches, rolling ditches, blowing kisses to the bitches." Lyrically, the track has a few morose moments as Rocky alludes to drug use and the passing on A$AP Yams, but for most part it's characteristically the Rocky we love. • Earl Sweatshirt "Solace"

    Release Date: Apr. 28, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Earl Sweatshirt
    Label: Tan Cressida/ Columbia

Earlier this week, Earl Sweatshirt dropped “Solace,” a 10-minute track dedicated to his mother. “Solace” is more of a collage than an actual song and Earl has described the project as “music from when I hit the bottom and found something.” Blending hip-hop and jazz influences with some of Earl’s darkest lyrics yet, “Solace” is way gloomier than anything on I Don’t Like Shit, I Don’t Go Outside but it’s definitely just as compelling. • Kehlani “The Way” f/ Chance the Rapper

    Release Date: Apr. 27, 2015
    Album: You Should Be Here
    Producer: Jahaan Sweet
    Label: N/A

Kehlani’s new mixtape, You Should Be Here, is easily one of the most impressive R&B releases so far this year. From start to finish, You Should Be Here sounds like the kind of project that could only come from an immensely talented, self aware young artist. Of all the tracks on the tape, though, “The Way” is a clear standout. In fact, the Chance the Rapper-assisted track is the closest thing that You Should Be Here has to a radio-friendly single. “The Way” sounds like a traditional pop song on Nyquil. The whole thing moves so slowly that the song almost comes to a full stop every time the surprisingly infectious chorus hits. It’s the kind of track that gets stuck in your head and stays there. Justin Smith

  • Casey Veggies "Tied Up" f/ DeJ Loaf

On the sultry new track, Casey Veggies and DeJ Loaf effortlessly play off of one another, delivering what could be the LA rapper's first major radio hit. While Casey Veggies paints a picture of his ideal girl, DeJ Loaf promises to be "a lady in the sheets" and a "freak in the sheets." Veggies is preparing to release his much-anticipated debut album, Live & Grow, and "Tied Up" is guaranteed to feed the hype. Justin Smith

    Release Date: Apr. 23, 2015
    Album: YOUTH
    Producer: Craven J, Jordan Bratton
    Label: RCA

With a sound that others can only accomplish shamelessly in the shower, Jordan Bratton has a solid shot at stardom. His latest track, “Prisoner” tells the tale of the one lady you had to let go. You know, the one who lived for the come-up and nothing else. Bratton croons, “No riches don’t make a happy home, No riches don’t compensate for soul.” Chance the Rapper holds his own on the second verse addressing how this girl is a prisoner within her own lifestyle, held hostage by her desires. Saps unite, and let the gangsta tears commence freely. —Leelah Logan

  • Glasses Malone "Thuggin'" f/ Kendrick Lamar

    Release Date: Apr. 24, 2015
Album: GH2: Life Ain't Nothing But
    Producer: N/A
    Label: Division Media Corporation

For the most part, we are all law abiding citizens who probably only jaywalk. However, thanks to Glasses Malone, for five minutes, we can be tax-evading, hard hustling, money-hungry thugs. In his ode to 2Pac, the biggest thug of them all, Malone gives a "real recognize real” delivery of some harsh lyrics which include calling out Migos for their Versace swag. The beat is simple, leaving the lyrics to carry the weight of the track. In the third verse, Kendrick Lamar delivers a verse in tune with the themes of To Pimp A Butterfly. He acknowledges that though he’s becoming a role model, he’s not for it and that it's not part of the lifestyle. K. also pays his respects to 2Pac saying, “Look in my eyes what do you see? God Orion lives in me.” —Justin Smith

  • Run The Jewels "Bust No Moves"

    Release Date: Apr. 22, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: El-P
    Label: Mass Appeal

On the SL Jones-assisted “Bust No Moves,” El-P and Killer Mike take a break from smoking weed and talking shit to trade verses about how much they love smoking weed and talking shit. Released in honor of Record Store Day, “Bust No Moves” is Run the Jewels in full flex mode. Thanks to synth-heavy production from El-P and Little Shalimar, this mid-tempo track straddles the fence between stoner rap and full-on banger. When Killer Mike brags that his verses could make the opposition “do a number two in their True Religions,” it’s hard not to believe him. —Justin Smith

  • Young Thug "Constantly Hating" f/ Birdman

    Release Date: Apr. 16, 2015
    Album: Barter 6
    Producer: Wheezy
    Label: 300

Young Thug and Birdman's "Constantly Hating" from Thug's Barter 6 project is a true piece of art. Seamlessly filling in for Lil Wayne as Birdman's number one ace, Thug for the moment proves to be a worthy partner for Baby, as they trade verses on the project's opening track. For the haters that diss Thug's pen game, look no further: "I might piece him up and let my partners smoke him, Chuck E Cheese, I'm about pizza and my Rol' on, I'm a gangster, baby I don't dance, I poke, right now I'm surrounded by some gangsters from Magnolia." So yes, Thug has his haters and he fully addresses them on this track, but anyone would be a fool to say that he's not making good music here. —Zach Frydenlund

  • Christian Rich "High" f/ Vince Staples and Bia

    Release Date: Apr. 16, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Christian Rich
    Label: N/A

Production duo Christian Rich recruited Vince Staples and Pharrell's latest signee, Bia, for their new song "High," and it couldn't have turned out any better. Right off the bat the production jumps out with a "New Slaves"-like minimal sound that immediately fits Staples' menacing rhyme schemes. Instead of a hook, we get an incredible production transition from the duo that leads into Bia's verse, showing off her growing potential. The standout part, of course, was her witty shade: "Pardon my back, 'cause I ain't looking behind me, soon as your ass big as Chyna, he'll go leave you for a Kylie." —Zach Frydenlund

  • Jaden Smith "Offering"

    Release Date: Apr. 15, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Tom Misch
    Label: N/A

We knew this was going to happen, right? We knew Jaden Smith, the resident fashion-foward space cadet of Hollywood’s First Family, was going to one day become a good rapper. Right? Go back and track the progression and a song like “Offering” shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Over a mellow sax-backed groove, Jaden sounds downright jaunty, giving listeners their clearest snapshot yet of exactly what is going in his head: It’s not all crackpot philosophies. We learn how he feels about fame, his circle of friends, his father, even Obama gets a shout out, proving that dude does in fact live on this here planet. We have no idea what Jaden’s career is shaping up to be—he could very well get bored with rap tomorrow and never spit another bar—but if he continues on this path he could be as famous as another actor-turned-rapper. —Damien Scott

  • Hudson Mohawke "Ryderz"

    Release Date: Apr. 14, 2015
    Album: Lantern
    Producer: Hudson Mohawke
    Label: Warp, Very GOOD Beats

HudMo is prepping for the release of his next album, Lantern, and he premiered Ryderz during his Rinse FM set earlier this week. After performing it during his set at Fader Fort earlier this year, fans were thirsty to hear the CDQ version. For someone who has spent the better part of the last few years working alongside Kanye West, it's safe to say HudMo's crushing soul sample would make his mentor proud. The DJ Rogers' "Watch Out For the Riders" sample loops throughout the track and about 3 minutes in, the triumphant, warped chorus reaches a peak of overwhelming nostalgia and warmth. —Lauren Nostro

  • The-Dream "Prime"

    Release Date: Apr. 14, 2015
    Album: Crown
Producer: Terius “The-Dream” Nash & Christopher “Tricky” Stewart
    Label: Capitol Records

The-Dream says his favorite song on his new EP Crown is “All I Need” mainly because of the emotion tied to it. “It’s real to him,” he says. His new project, one half of a forthcoming album, is a collection of tracks that takes everything we like about The-Dream and turns it up a notch. For those wanting that old thing back, it will satiate. For those wondering if The-Dream can hang with the new breed for so-called alternative R&B artists, it will silence doubts. Though “That’s My Shit” and “Fruition” were picked as singles, it’s the EP’s opener that deserves your attention. Slinking and seductive, “Prime,” as the title suggests, has The-Dream telling a woman that she should give in to his advances because, at this moment, he’s as good as he’s going to get. After a stretch of middling solo success, it could be taken as a message to fans, as well. —Damien Scott

  • Tyler the Creator "F***KING YOUNG/PERFECT"

    Release Date: Apr. 8, 2015
    Album: Cherry Bomb
    Producer: N/A
    Label: OFWGKTA

This week Tyler, the Creator unexpectedly released “DEATHCAMP” and “FUCKING YOUNG/PERFECT” as the two lead singles for his upcoming third album Cherry Bomb. On both of the new tracks, Tyler’s controversial, larger-than-life persona takes a backseat to his actual music. For an artist whose built an entire brand by making audiences uncomfortable, Tyler’s two newest releases are surprisingly gimmick-free. Whether he’s talking about young love on “FUCKING YOUNG/PERFECT” or bragging his ass off on the fuzzy, guitar-driven “DEATHCAMP”, the Tyler of the Cherry Bomb era has seemingly made the shift from caricature to three-dimensional musician. Tyler isn’t becoming any less aggressive, he’s just growing up. —Justin Smith

  • A$AP Rocky "M'$"

    Release Date: Apr. 8, 2015
    Album: A.L.L.A.
Producer: Honorable C Note, Mike Dean
    Label: Polo Grounds/RCA

"It’s money, it’s mule, it’s millions, M’s!” A$AP Rocky’s newest hit is all about the money, literally. The bass-heavy beat alone makes this song an automatic hit. As far as the lyrics go, Lord Flacko is busy from hanging with models to sipping on Clicquot with the mob, but at the end of the day he just wants to get paid. For Rocky, stunting isn’t just a habit, since the amount in his bank is equivalent to the amount his YouTube views. This track may not be a single, but it single-handedly represents A$AP and his lifestyle. —Leelah Logan

Over trap-influenced production from Lee Bannon and ThemPeople, Mick Jenkins declares that his lyrics are “gold" and there are “no cowardly dogs in the pound.” When Jenkins raps, “People tell me I’m that nigga now/ I know none of that shit is real,” it’s a gentle reminder that to us all that he was a beast even before the hype. Justin Smith

  • Carly Rae Jepsen "All That"

    Release Date: Apr. 3, 2015
    Album: N/A
Producer: Dev Hynes and Ariel Rechtshaid
    Label: Interscope

Carly Rae Jepsen’s new single “All That” is the kind of glistening slow jam that sounds just as good today as it would have 30 years ago. With Dev Hynes (Blood Orange) at the helm, Carly Rae Jepsen gets vulnerable and croons about wanting to be wanted over production that is essentially audible glitter. Jepsen’s delicate vocals hit their peak during the song’s final chorus, when the drums come in and she confidently whispers, “Show me if you want me.” “All That” doesn’t sound anything like the music that people have come to expect from Jepsen and that’s probably why it works so well. —Justin Smith

The beat is raucous but still harmonious, and Hov holds it down on the bridge. Within the lyrics, Jay addresses his rise to riches, religion, and race. His references to religion and pop culture within the track are innumerable, and could educate any heathen."I call it as it happens, the art of quality rapping. One autobiographical chapter could start up the rapture." Jay believes credibility comes from his life, what he's seen and what he's heard is what will take him to the future. —Leelah Logan

  • Carly Rae Jepsen "I Really Like You"

    Release Date: Mar. 3
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Peter Svensson
    Label: Interscope

Carly Rae Jepsen is back. Earlier this week, Jepsen released her new single “I Really Like You” and it’s honestly a certified pop anthem. “I Really Like You” is so formulaic that you can’t even be mad at it. The synth tracks are layered perfectly and the chorus is repetitive enough to make the song virtually unforgettable. On the chorus, every repetition of the phrase “I Really Like You” feels like an F U to everyone who labeled her a one hit wonder or retweeted that embarrassing article about her charity event that only had twenty attendees. Whether you like her or not, one thing’s for sure: Carly Rae Jepsen understands pop music. —Justin Smith

  • Action Bronson "Baby Blue" f/ Chance the Rapper

Anyone whose listened to Chance the Rapper’s severely underrated track “NaNa” is aware that Action Bronson and Chance the Rapper have an undeniable chemistry. On Action Bronson's jazz-inspired “Baby Blue,” Chance effortlessly breezes through the hook and Action Bronson dominates the verses with surprisingly vulnerable lyrics about a spiteful girlfriend. The best part of the track, though, comes during the third verse when Chance earnestly reels off a series of bitter, middle school level insults like “I hope you get a paper cut” and “I hope your titties get all saggy in your early 20's.” With “Baby Blue,” Chance and Action Bronson reaffirm the fact that hip-hop doesn’t have to be angry to be interesting. —Justin Smith

On “Adore,” the verses are sleepy and the choruses are a perfect cross between EDM and hip-hop. A 27-year-old DJ from Norway and a pint-sized Nickelodeon star might seem like a questionable pairing, but “Adore” proves that Cashmere Cat and Ariana Grande are the unlikely duo that pop music needs right now. —Justin Smith

  • DJ Carnage "I Like Tuh" f/ iLOVEMAKONNEN

    Release Date: Feb. 26, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: DJ Carnage
    Label: Ultra

If iLOVEMAKONNEN’s mission for 2015 is to dominate every pre-game playlist ever, then “I Like Tuh” is a move in the right direction. On the DJ Carnage track, the two team up to deliver a crossover party anthem, fully equipped with one of Makonnen’s notoriously catchy hooks. On the production end, DJ Carnage finds the perfect balance between synths and heavy bass, blending electronic and hip-hop influences with ease. The end of the song, when the track becomes a sort of piano ballad dedicated to “White girls twerkin like the work,” is also pretty ridiculous in the best way possible. —Justin Smith

    Album: N/A
    Producer: N/A
    Label: Def Jam

Kanye West's performance at the Brit Awards was fire. No, literally, a flamethrower was present for his debut of "All Day." While some of you may not have been feeling Ye's new artistic perspective, you know you wish you could've mobbed onstage for that performance. All flames and hate aside, the song is Kanye to a T—on it, he claims he's bothered by the overpriced sneaker culture, but he let us know that it's still "20 Gs for the Yeezy's on the eBay." The hook is loaded with questions appropriately answered with "All day, nigga." From getting money to getting married, he's still the same Kanye. —Leelah Logan

Sampling Ambrosia's "How Much I Feel" and paired with Yeezy's auto-tuned angst. the song has all the ingredients of successful collab between mentor and mentee. The call and response in the third verse is reminiscent of "Why I Love You" from Watch the Throne, a great genius and prodigy collaboration done by Kanye and Jay-Z. Together, they want the world to know, there's no hate, they don't fuck with you, and it's all your fault. —Leelah Logan

    Release Date: Feb. 12, 2015
    Album: N/A
Producer: Sinjin Hawke and Cashmere Cat
    Label: Def Jam

This past week, Kanye reaffirmed that his presence is, in fact, a present. Musically, we've seen a change in Kanye's style from the emotional "Only One" to the angsty "FourFiveSeconds" with Rihanna and Sir Paul. At his fashion show last week and during his performance on SNL's 40th anniversary special, Kanye gave us another taste of the glory that will surely be his new album with "Wolves," the first song on his album featuring Sia and Vic Mensa. Both Sia and Yeezy's lyrics tell the tale of their rise from the depths of the likes of depression, rage, fear, and suicide. The song also speaks to their salvation, but not without Vic Mensa's accusatory declaration, with a sadistically sweet delivery. The music, while eerie, is still quite appealing, leaving us on our knees praying for his album to drop. In Yeezus name, Amen. —Leelah Logan

Boi-1da never disappoints so naturally “Know Yourself” features one of the most infectious beats that Drake’s been on in a while. It’s the kind of mid-tempo beat that Drake was built for. Producer: Boi-1da, The Koz, and Terrace Martin
    Label: Interscope

The track is aggressive, as Lamar addresses racially charged self-hatred. He forgoes the subliminal jabs, and takes it to the head with lyrics like, "You sabotage my community, makin' a killin', You made me a killer, emancipation of a real nigga." Paired with the head-banging bass, shots of truth are served straight along with the support of Assassin's staunch background vocals. More importantly, Kendrick acknowledges that, like the world, he too is a hypocrite. His entire third verse reads like the new Miranda rights. There's a little something within the lyrics and synth for everybody, and Schoolboy Q provide us with the details of his enviable West Coast lifestyle. Album: N/A
    Producer: FKI
    Label: N/A

A year from now, Post Malone is going to be able to look back on “White Iverson” as the song that helped him break through. The track is undeniably reminiscent of Spooky Black—Post Malone even follows Spooky’s tradition of taking ironic selfies in ugly sunglasses—but, honestly, “White Iverson” is impressive enough to stand on its own merit. The slow-tempo beat suits his voice perfectly and the hook is bizarrely addictive. He only has one other song on his Soundcloud but, if we’re lucky, Post Malone has a few more tricks up his sleeve. —Justin Smith

"4 by 1" not to be confused with a mere measurement is the name of one of the three songs released on his latest EP, This Is the Album. The song has a catchy hook, but it's the verses that really capture your attention as Smith uses a varying rhyme structure. He reminds us that the media is the devil, but then again his Twitter feed tells us that regularly; when we can decipher it anyway. Smith is definitely about his art, and we anticipate a lot of it in the coming year. —Leelah Logan

  • Trey Songz "Slow Motion"

    Release Date: Jan. 13, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Charlie Puth
    Label: Atlantic

Trey Songz likes having sex. So much so, that doing it in any speed other than in slow motion just wouldn't be right. On his latest single, "Slow Motion," Trigga brings a familiar lay-you-down-by-the-fire vibe. "Slow Motion" begins with clean electric guitar plucking to bring out the sensuality in Trey Songz's coos, but rather abruptly, DJ Mustard-esque shakes, snaps, and claps layer on-top. The start-stop action of the track—the pushing and pulling between the song's guitar melody and its West Coast funk—is a timing tool that Trey Songz used effectively on "Slow Motion." Between tender-to-naughty fireplace rhymes and the instrumental's cadence queues, Trey's got another baby-making single on his hands. —Justin Block

  • Future "Just Like Bruddas"

    Release Date: Jan. 14, 2015
    Album: Beast Mode
    Producer: Zaytoven
    Label: N/A

We’ve seen breakup Future at his pettiest (“Pussy Overrated) and we’ve seen him at his lowest and most alone (the second half of “Throw Away”). But the really fun thing about breakups is that they’re not coin-flip emotional binaries between fraudulent trifling and awful despair. Nope, they make you feel extreme things in a variety of directions. “Just Like Bruddas,” from his collaborative mixtape Beast Mode, with Zaytoven, is about gunplay and downing Percocet like Chiclets, sure, but it’s also about good friends, those “goons in the cut” that you treat “just like brothers.” Those dudes have your back. Zaytoven’s piano keys are especially bright here, almost like Vanessa Carlton on a really good day. Things are looking up for Future. —Ross Scarano

He even addressed the Cash Money situation with the lines, "Did my time in Cash Money, time served and released, but this agent ain't free, word, that's the word on these streets, but that shit is old news, that shit is so yesterweek, I'm just focused, focused on my expertise." We hear that focus, Wayne, we hear it. —Zach Frydenlund

  • Rae Sremmurd "This Could Be Us"

    Release Date: Jan. 6, 2015
    Album: SremmLife
    Producer: Mike WiLL Made-It
    Label: Ear Drummers

Rae Sremmurd defies expectations constantly. “No Flex Zone” was painted a one-hit wonder. Then “No Type” silenced the doubts, going gold before its predecessor. Their name was painted a career killer, mispronunciation supposedly precluding a fruitful attempt at branding. So at this point, if anyone was going to be able to reach into Twitter, grab a meme, and alchemically turn it into a hot song, it was going to be Swae Lee and Slim Jimmy. The young duo seems to find making a bad song impossible, and “This Could Be Us” is no exception. They wax melodic on a springy Mike Will piano, and ultimately deliver us yet another undeniable party anthem. —Alex Russell

  • Wiz Khalifa f/ Ty Dolla $ign "Refresh/Say No More"

    Release Date: Jan. 7, 2015
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Nice Rec
    Label: Atlantic

Where is Wiz Khalifa’s head right now? After the unforgivable and just patently incorrect “Pussy Overrated,” the prognosis looked bleak. But somehow he’s corrected his course with the near-nine-minute long “Refresh/Say No More,” a tantric epic featuring Ty Dolla $ign that should come with a planetarium and laser light show. “Don’t talk about it, just be about it,” Ty sings, his echoing voice fading into the void like a tiny astronaut disappearing into the pussy. This is the culmination of Wiz dying his hair purple. Here’s to hoping for an entire album of hot yoga sex songs. —Ross Scarano

  • Kanye West f/ Paul McCartney "Only One"

    Release Date: Dec. 31, 2014
    Album: N/A
Producer: Kanye West and Paul McCartney
    Label: N/A

When a song of this magnitude surfaces, sometimes it makes more sense—instead of talking about its grand cultural implications or even its place in the artist’s career arc—to simply take a step back for a second and look at the song through a personal lens. And in the case of “Only One,” all I can tell you is that I can’t just listen to it. Rather, I have to commit to listening to it. I love the song, but I’ve come to terms with the fact that I tear up every time I hear it. The tear starts forming around “No, you’re not perfect but you’re not your mistakes” and fully manifests right around the hiccup between “I just want you to do me a favor” and “Tell Nori about me.” Without fail. I don’t know how much of it is due to just how invested I’ve been in Ye’s narrative historically, or just how much I miss my own mother, but the song has a seemingly paradoxical quality of being deeply and specifically personal, while remaining universally relatable. —Alex Russell

The-Dream didn’t give us his best with IV Play, his last proper album. His free follow-up EP, Royalty: The Prequel, with the great “Wedding Bells,” hinted at good things to come, but the cocky, bouncy “That’s My Shit” is the genuine article. This is that late-night sext that really hits the spot and promises powerful future sex. To quote the man himself, “I put that pussy in the rain/You put that pussy in a drought.” 2015 goals: “She don’t love you, cause if she did/She wouldn’t be all in my phone like ‘That’s my dick.’" —Ross Scarano

On a laid-back track, Top Dawg Entertainment President Punch takes the opportunity to graciously reflect on his rough past and the importance of his grind to make it beyond the age of 25. With the help of Kendrick Lamar on the hook, “25” pays homage to Tupac who was killed at a quarter-century while embodying the spirit of survival and living each day as if it could be the last. —Lakin Starling

  • Rae Sremmurd f/ Nicki Minaj and Young Thug "Throw $um Mo"

    Release Date: Dec. 9, 2014
    Album: Sremm Life
    Producer: Mike WiLL Made It
    Label: EarDrummers Entertainment

It's safe to say Rae Sremmurd is officially three for three on their album singles. The first two—"No Flex Zone" and "No Type"—are some of the best songs of the year, and with their upcoming debut album, #SremmLife, dropping in January, the duo dropped "Throw $um Mo" with Nicki Minaj and Young Thug. While many expected Nicki to have a verse on the track, she holds down the hook while Slim Jimmy and Swae Lee rap all about the women they desire. Between Rae Sremmurd and Young Thug's unique sound, "Throw $um Mo" needs to be played at every function over the next couple months. —Josh Edwards

  • Lil Herb f/ Earl Sweatshirt "Knucklehead"

    Label: N/A

The idea of Red Bull's 20Before15 Series is pretty incredible—20 exclusive tracks in 20 days from 33 artists who have been involved in Red Bull’s projects over the past year. Linking Lil Herb and Earl Sweatshirt on "Knucklehead," an Earl-produced track, is something that probably should've been done months ago. Earl and Herb spit effortlessly slick lines over the soulful production, leaving fans wanting more collabs from the two as soon as possible. —Lauren Nostro

Just when you think that you can’t upset your co-workers/partner/neighbors/family members any further with repeated listenings of PARTYNEXTDOOR TWO, the Canadian R&B upstart blesses the world with a new EP. “This moment deserves a moment,” he sings on "Let's Get Married," the best of the bunch, and he’s absolutely right. Now get wed to this beautiful, gauzy ode to the insanity of love. —Ross Scarano

Album: Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack
    Producer: Alchemist
    Label: N/A

Danny Brown and Action Bronson's explosive collaboration, "Bad News," which features some bass-rattling production from Alchemist, made its way online earlier this week as part of the Grand Theft Auto V soundtrack. • Key Wane f/ Ty Dolla $ign "Same N****"

    Release Date: Dec. 2, 2014
    Album: From Now On
    Producer: Key Wane
    Label: N/A

Key Wane has established himself as a go-to producer over the last few years, with hit single credits like Meek Mill's "Amen," Big Sean's "Guap," and Drake's "All Me" to his name. But like any rising talent behind the boards—Mike WiLL Made It and DJ Mustard come to mind—the Detroit native looks to slide into the spotlight. That's evident on "Same Nigga," where Key Wane recruits Ty Dolla $ign for a soulful cut that gets better with each listen. The record features a noticeable flip of Big Sean's "IDFWU," which is fair game considering Wane's close relationship with the Detroit representative. Plus, we get signature Ty Dolla: "Before I had dough I still look like this/And before I had dough I still take your bitch." We wouldn't doubt his word. —Edwin Ortiz

  • Mary J. Blige “Doubt”

    Release Date: Nov. 24, 2014
    Album: The London Sessions
    Producer: Rodney Jerkins
    Label: Capitol

Mary J. Blige continues to keep us locked firmly in our feelings on this song from the Rodney Jerkins-produced London Sessions. Judge us, but who among you are strong enough to resist a moody bass line, power piano chords, and chest-thumping, self-affirmations like “I can't keep doubting myself anymore” sung by the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul? —Christine Werthman

  • Beyoncé “7/11”

    Release Date: Nov. 20, 2014
    Album: Beyoncé: Platinum Edition
    Producer: Bobby Johnson, Detail
    Label: Columbia

“7/11” is weird. The back-half of the extended version of “Get Me Bodied” is maybe precedent, in that “7/11” consists of King Bey offering instructions for a bunch of different activities you can do with various parts of your body. “Legs moving side to side, smack it in the air/Shoulders moving side to side, smack it in the air,” and the like. The video brings it together (by visualizing each action), but even independent of Beyonce and her friends having maximum fun in a bathroom, the song works. It’s a nasty bit of trunk-rattling Texas music that is going to turn your New Year’s Eve party upside down. —Ross Scarano

  • Rick Ross f/ Jay Z and Tink “Movin' Bass”

    Release Date: Nov. 19, 2014
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Timbaland
    Label: Maybach, Def Jam, Slip-n-Slide

Rick Ross is the star of the official “Movin' Bass” release, with Jay Z quarantined to the hook, but Tink owns this rendition. Timbaland produced the track, and he's the one responsible for angering Ross by leaking this version, where Jay also has a more prominent role. Which song came first—the leak or the one on Hood Billionaire—is now up for debate, but regardless of order, Tink comes out on top. —Christine Werthman

  • Pusha T “Lunch Money”

    Release Date: Nov. 18, 2014
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Kanye West
Label: GOOD Music, Def Jam Recordings

Pusha T justifies this bully of a track by saying he’s “fucking hungry,” but we’re not sure that’s the case. Nah, King Push just enjoys being the best dope boy quotable. He’s going to take everyone else’s lunch money whether he’s hungry or not. And it’s not even a fair fight when he’s got Kanye West—who provided this strangely infectious, gurgling beat—on his side.—Ian Servantes

  • Willow Smith f/ SZA “9”

    Release Date: Nov. 17, 2014
    Album: III EP
    Producer: AzZi
    Label: Roc Nation

I wish I had made music instead of yelling at my mom as my outlet for teenage angst and pubescent confusion. Willow Smith is growing up right before our eyes, and it's because she's letting us into her diary. Assisted by big sister SZA on “9,” Willow claims she's "not a kid no more / I did some things that you can see that I've been going away.” It's a bold, and almost predictable statement for a 14-year-old, but she's already so good of a singer that I want to listen in every time she's got something new to say. Teenagers say a lot of dumb stuff for attention (I still do even as a young adult), but in the case of Willow Smith, what she sings and the music she's singing over deserves your ear. —Justin Block

  • Jaden Smith “Fire”

    Release Date: Nov. 17, 2014
    Album: Jaden Experience
    Producer: Christian Rich
    Label: N/A

Who would have guessed Jaden Smith would be one of the unsung heroes in hip-hop in 2014? But, here we are. Over the last few months, the Smith has released a plethora of good music, but possibly none better than “Fire,” which appeared on his recent album, Cool Tape 2. This track really embodies what Jaden is about as a musician, taking advantage of a clap-heavy beat from Christian Rich that samples some jungle noises, as he raps with a fitting aggressiveness, while also flexing his lyrical prowess with lines like, “I'm trapping like a hot boy, all my failures crush your successes, got me flipping like a skateboard.” With Jaden everything seems to be a wild card (look at his tweets), but as of right now, it appears that he is very serious about his music, and you should appreciate that, because he's been putting out fire. —Zach Frydenlund

  • Ty Dolla $ign “Stand For”

    Release Date: Nov. 15, 2014
    Album: Free TC
    Producer: Diplo
Label: Taylor Gang Records, Atlantic Records

The first single from Ty Dolla $ign's debut album, Free TC, differs a lot from his other big songs, partly because he's singing about being a ride-or-die friend rather than pussy and partly because of the gauzy production work of Diplo and DJ Dahi. Where “Or Nah” is grimy and “Paranoid” creeps, this might be the first song of Ty's that you can listen to with the lights on. —Christine Werthman

  • A$AP Ferg f/ YG “This Side”

    Release Date: Nov. 11, 2014
    Album: Ferg Forever
    Producer: The Fam
    Label: N/A

If you couldn’t tell by the burgundy curtain on the single art, the title, or the chorus on which Ferg says, “On this side, damu hangs,” this song is a sinister celebration of those who rep blood. Makes sense for YG to make an appearance where he explains his affiliation: “I’m from Bompton, if you grew up in the hood, you got no option.” —Damien Scott

  • Azealia Banks “Wallace”

    Release Date: Nov. 6, 2014
    Album: Broke With Expensive Taste
    Producer: Yung Skeeter
    Label: N/A

From Azealia Bank's much-delayed, ever agonized debut album, Broke With Expensive Taste, the overall construction of “Wallace” is a tribal parade of bucket drums, plucky chimes, and a sly, spicy clarinet. Azealia sings first and raps later, tongue-twisting a lover's tease: “Ever got licked but he never got swallowed / Bitch, you know that nigga in the sugar pop lotto / He was on her Twitter but he never got followed.” —Justin Charity

  • T-Pain “Stoicville”

    Release Date: Nov. 6, 2014
    Album: Stoicville
    Producer: Self-produced
    Label: RCA

Soon after T-Pain shocked the world by showing off how he sings without his signature Auto-Tune settings, he dropped “Stoicville”—a track devoid of vocal effects or syrupy R&B sounds. The Tallahassee native raps straight-through, letting his southern drawl take over for more than four minutes of introspection from a man whose career has been every which way in recent years. “I still rep the 8-5-0, yeah / I got it tatted on my arm, it ain't going nowhere,” he raps, snapping off the last vowel with defiance. For a therapeutic lap through T-Pain's mind, look no further. —Justin Block

  • Big K.R.I.T. f/ Lupe Fiasco “Lost Generation”

    Release Date: Nov. 3, 2014
    Album: Cadillactica
    Producer: Big K.R.I.T.
Label: Def Jam, Cinematic Music Group

Big K.R.I.T. and Lupe Fiasco are kindred spirits, both too wise and too lyrical to drop songs aimed at late night club sets. So it’s about time the two get together on the same song. Not everyone will listen to their preaching teaching about gross consumerism, gang violence, and the military industrial complex, but maybe that's why there’s a lost generation. —Ian Servantes

  • Nas “The Season”

    Release Date: Oct. 30, 2014
    Album: N/A
    Producer: J Dilla
    Label: Mass Appeal Records

After spending most of the year taking a victory lap, celebrating the 20th anniversary of his ’94 debut Illmatic, Nas hopped on the brassy and plodding “Gobstopper” beat from J. Dilla’s 2006 album Donuts. The track catches us up on the Don's life since 2012’s Life Is Good, while reminding us that even if he’s not out and about, he’s always working: “Who told you I lost it? I just put it down for a second, damn, can’t a king lounge for a second, kick his hooves up, grow subtle on the face without a smooth cut? Grow a little gut? Can’t even enjoy the fruit of my labor.” —Damien Scott

  • Shamir “On the Regular”

    Release Date: Oct. 29, 2014
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Nick Sylvester
    Label: XL Recordings

Shamir is a 20-year-old Vegas native who just signed to XL this year, and his first single on the label is like the aural equivalent of throwing yourself around a bounce house. It's all burnt synthesizer whomps and tinny cowbell hits, with Shamir revealing his cheeky cleverness by sing-spitting lines like “Guess I'm never ending, you can call me pi.” —Christine Werthman

  • Future “F**k Up Some Commas”

    Release Date: Oct. 28, 2014
    Album: Monster
    Producer: DJ Spinz, Southside
    Label: N/A

Future said he would return to his Dirty Sprite days on October’s Monster mixtape, and standout song “F**k Up Some Commas” showed us that he wasn't fucking around. The DJ Spinz & Southside-produced song strips away the softer side of Future that we saw on his sophomore effort Honest and brings him back to creating his signature trunk rattling anthems. The horror movie-esque production keeps him on his toes throughout the song, as he blows money fast and struggles to stay on top. —Justin Davis

  • Nicki Minaj f/ Drake, Lil Wayne, and Chris Brown “Only”

    Release Date: Oct. 28, 2014
    Album: The Pinkprint
Producer: Dr. Luke, Cirkut, HBM, JMIKE, Rock City
Label: Young Money, Cash Money, Republic

During my interview with Nicki Minaj for Complex's Dec/Jan cover, she made me pinky promise not to mention that a Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, and Drake-featured track would appear on her upcoming album, The Pinkprint, until our story dropped. Her words were, “It's straight rap. Three long verses.” There was no mention that she put her mentor and YMCMB teammate, on a track talking about how they haven't, but totally would, fuck her. Brown mailed in his chorus. We're not talking about real bitches and real dudes, we're talking about Drake getting hard in the back of Nicki's Maybach and Lil Wayne accusing Nicki of having an attitude as a result of bad sex. Always one to deflect the male gaze, Nicki manages to squash any and all rumors, and probably her ex's pride and dignity, in just over five minutes. Bravo. —Lauren Nostro

  • Fergie f/ YG “L.A. Love (La La) (Remix)”

    Release Date: Oct. 27, 2014
    Album: N/A
    Producer: DJ Mustard
    Label: Interscope

DJ Mustard has a tight grip on L.A. right now, and Fergie's “L.A. Love (La La)” only tightens his hold. If his signature bounce and Fergie's charm doesn't keep you bopping and shouting “la-la-la-la-la,” Compton's YG comes along for the ride and let's everyone know that he's from “West Side, California babe!” In juxtaposition to Taylor Swift's “Welcome to New York,” “L.A. Love” is as authentic of a regional anthem as pop music has right now. —Justin Block

  • Taylor Swift “Blank Space”

    Release Date: Oct. 27, 2014
    Album: 1989
    Producer: Max Martin, Shellback
Label: Big Machine Records, Republic Records

1989's second single hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 by supplanting the first one, “Shake It Off.” While “Shake It Off” is a playful affair that even Kendrick Lamar can't resist, “Blank Space” becomes downright terrifying by the end of the second verse, showing us once again TSwift is the last lover on Earth you'd want to spurn. —Ian Servantes

  • Drake “6 God”

    Release Date: Oct. 25, 2014
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Boi-1da & Syk Sense
    Label: OVO

Whether on purpose or by accident (those damn hackers), Drizzy gave fans plenty of new music throughout 2014, including the energetic, bass-rattling, “6 God,” a reference to him running things in his hometown of Toronto. Like most Drizzy tracks, this one immediately gave fans plenty of quotable lyrics for Twitter and Instagram, while showcasing a slick talking style from Drake that many fans beg for him to do more often.—Zach Frydenlund

  • Run the Jewels f/ Zack De La Rocha “Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)”

    Release Date: Oct. 13, 2014
    Album: Run The Jewels 2
    Producer: El-P
    Label: Mass Appeal Records

“We're killing them for freedom cuz they tortured us for boredom / and even if some good ones die, fuck it: the Lord'll sort em,” is the unofficial motto of post-Ferguson America, which does indeed explain Run the Jewels' uncontested, apparently universal acclaim. Zack De La Rocha swoops through with the head-banger hook and rebel's conclusion: “The only thing to close quicker than our caskets be the factory.” —Justin Charity

  • O.T. Genasis “CoCo”

    Release Date: Oct. 13, 2014
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Juice the Producer
    Label: Conglomerate Records

"CoCo" is a triumphant ode to all-white everything, possessing baking soda, and falling in love with cocaine (and having it for the low, low). O.T. Genasis has to have more heat in the tank, because we've never heard someone quite as proud to be in love with, well, the CoCo. —Lauren Nostro

  • Bobby Shmurda “Bobby Bitch”

    Release Date: Oct. 11, 2014
    Album: Shmurda She Wrote
    Producer: DONDRE
    Label: Epic

You'll never forget Bobby Shmurda's name. After “Hot Nigga” fame came the gritty, obnoxious, name-chanting anthem “Bobby Bitch” where the Brooklyn rapper repeats his name over, and over, and over again. Sure, the viral-by-way-of-Vine star signed a deal and Epic is pushing all sorts of fuckery with him (Shmurda Mob included), but no matter what, his energy is unparalleled. Don't believe us? Blast this and hit the BQE—you'll be mobbing before you get a mile into his borough. —Lauren Nostro

  • A$AP Rocky f/ Juicy J “Multiply”

    Release Date: Oct. 2, 2014
    Album: N/A
    Producer: Curtis Heron
    Label: RCA

The beginning of Flacko Jodye Season reminded us not only of A$AP Rocky’s status in the fashion world—elevated high enough that he can eviscerate two brands he put on—but also in hip-hop. If this Juicy J-assisted, Pimp C-honoring capital-b Banger is any indication, the sophomore slump won’t be a thing for Rocky. His adoption of Houston hip-hop isn’t growing old. It’s growing stronger.—Ian Servantes

  • Rich Gang f/ Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan “Tell Em Lies”

    Release Date: Sept. 29, 2014
Album: Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1
    Producer: London on da Track
    Label: N/A

Rich Homie Quan and Young Thug are undoubtedly the tag team champions of rap this year, and their victory lap was Rich Gang: Tha Tour Part 1, which dropped in September. “Tell Em (Lies)” is one of the slower cuts on the album, which has Thug running off punchlines that would make his mentor Lil Wayne jealous and Rich Homie Quan doing his best David Ruffin impression in the ad-libs. The real best part about the song is Thug and Quan going completely off the rails to create the most gangster duet in recent history. —Justin Davis

  • Fetty Wap “Trap Queen”

    Producer: Swagg R'Celious
    Label: N/A

Bay Area songstress Kehlani manages to translate her style to the refreshingly catchy single “FWU,” which appears on her Cloud 19 mixtape that dropped in April. With a sound that is more reminiscent of an early 2000s R&B hit, the song has a vintage feel that retains this generation’s sensibilities as the easily repeatable chorus is surely going to give way to your Twitter feed being filled with “#FWU” hashtags in the near future. —Justin Davis
