Beyonce baby complaints at NY hospital dismissed

NEW YORK (AP) — State health officials on Wednesday dismissed complaints that patients in a hospital neonatal unit were mistreated while Beyonce was there giving birth to her and Jay-Z's daughter.

They had received two complaints about Manhattan's Lenox Hill Hospital, one made anonymously, the other from someone who had learned about the matter through the media, a health department spokesman said. Officials reviewed the complaints and dismissed them Wednesday night, spokesman Jeffrey Gordon said without elaborating.

The hospital, a popular choice for the rich and famous from late philanthropist Brooke Astor to "30 Rock" star Tina Fey, said it was conducting its own probe.

Beyonce gave birth to the couple's baby, Blue Ivy Carter, at the hospital on Saturday.

Media reports said Beyonce and Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, paid $1 million to take over a floor and their security guard blocked parents from the neonatal unit for hours. The hospital denied the reports, saying the couple paid the standard rate for an executive suite without disclosing what that is.

One new mother, Rozz Nash-Coulon, told The Associated Press that her twins, born Dec. 28, were in the neonatal unit and, starting Friday, intense security measures made it a struggle to see them as guards directed hallway traffic.

"Once they checked in there was high security everywhere," she said Monday. "It looked like the president was on our floor. The hospital's security cameras were taped over. Internal windows from the hallways into the ward were blacked out."

The hospital's executive director was heading up its own inquiry into the complaints, hospital spokeswoman Barbara Osborn said. The hospital was interviewing parents who had children in the newborn wing when Jay-Z and Beyonce were there, she said.

"We have spoken to seven out of the 10," she said. "None have reported being stopped from seeing their babies."

She confirmed that security cameras were briefly taped over when the Carter family was being moved, "but only when a security guard was present" on the fourth floor, where the neonatal unit is located. She declined to say why they were taped over.

She said that other parents at the unit did notice "enhanced security." But she said none felt restricted from accessing the unit or any other at the hospital.

Jay-Z confirmed the birth of the couple's daughter in a song released on his social website Life and Times on Monday.

Taping over security cameras should never be allowed, no matter what.
      • Rick S 4 mths ago
And if the hospital OK'd that, they should be sued.

        Well said Sara and Rick

I agree! I work in the security field and while I don't know that particular hospitals policy, I know that taping over or otherwise obstructing cameras at just about any facility is strictly prohibited. Having that other security guard there means nothing since anything can happen and then it would become a he said-she said- issue. Either way, the cameras are there for everyone's safety. I don't care who you are. If you didn't want to be on camera then stay in your house and never go out in public.

News Flash Beyonce & Jay-Z: your baby is no more special than any other baby in that hospital or any other hospital anywhere in the world. I'm a nurse who works with kids and babies and I'd be damned if anyone prevented parents from seeing their child while in a hospital. Shame on this hospital for allowing them to go to these extreme measures (collecting staff cell phones, taping over security cameras, etc) just so that their privacy was enforced. They should've taken that $1mill and hired the staff to birth the baby in one of their many mansions. They probaly did it so that all the media outlets like People magazine can start their bidding wars on who gets first dibs on getting 'exclusive' baby pics. Unless this baby was born with actual angel wings and a halo, it probably doesn't look any different than most other babies. Just sayin'.

AMEN ON THAT JOHN!! Why people like Beyonce and Jay-Z think their baby deserves special treatment is beyond me--they are just ordinary people like everyone else--they were spit out of their mamas like we all were.
      • n 4 mths ago
If they were ordinary people they would have been treated as such but since they are famous they needed the security Kathy.
      • Rickster 4 mths ago
The ARE ordinary people--nothing special at all. Just people. That's it. Being famous doesn't make one special--they are just ordinary.

Like the hospital is going to admit to wrong doing. Money talks.... LOUDLY.
      • CC 4 mths ago
Hospitals are no different. They are as corrupt as Washington D.C.
      • Ray 4 mths ago
        CC you got that right.
      • LW 4 mths ago
I can't necessarily fault a hospital for taking in a bunch of extra cash if they use it to help other patients.
    • Ed  •  4 mths ago
They will never admit to what they did. It is OK if you have the money to pull off something like that but not at the point where other parents feel they have been mistreated. This was not fair. The other parents may not have paid as much as they did but they still were entitled to be treated better.

        You are ABSOLUTELY right.....
      • susan 4 mths ago
all this is *** if she has red blood and flesh like all human beings why the privacy?? otherwise they should have done it at home in their privacy with or without the cameras to avoid evidence of whatever they are hiding.
      • Ray 4 mths ago
Hmm. I bet the hospital will never admit to anything being out of the ordinary. They will turn a blind eye to the complaints. In fact, the article says that no one felt restricted. Yet apparently someone with twins in the neo-care unit did. I understand celebs need privacy from the public. Fans aren't always so great at granting them that privacy, but to inconvenience a host of people or even one person for the sake of a celeb having that privacy is not right.

Being of "evil" disposition sometimes, I think the parents did the wrong thing by complaining to the hospital. I would've pretended I didn't know that Beyonce was there, and called 911 to report that a group of thugs not employed by the hospital itself had taken over and that it might a possible hostage situation. Let the director explain what it was doing to the NYPD. But hey, that's just me. :)

You can go to jail for a false police report Einstein

Good point there Lin. Probably not the best idea after all. (Note level of respect I used in replying in an open forum)... ;)

Only if you didn't know it wasn't a take over.

The security cameras should have never been covered for ANY reason!

We (Americans) have nobody to blame but ourselves for this mess. People make these celebraties into psuedo- gods because they can sing a pretty note, rhyme words, master a child's game with a ball, or an assortment of absolutely useless skills that is needed in life.

Most the people out there angry about this episode, would french kiss a maggot to meet their favorite "idol" be it a sports star, actor /actress, or politician. So just live your life, and ignore these two overated clowns the best way possible.

So does everyone get to opt out of being recorded by security cameras?

money breeds arrogance. And those who cater to it are just the same.
    • Lucy  •  Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin  •  4 mths ago
Why would any hospital allow security cameras to be taped over? That hospital needs to be investigated because they were putting all of the other patients at risk. These are things that happen in third world countries. Oh I forgot we are becoming one. If you have money you can do anything. Got news for those people, you baby is no more important than any other baby in that hospital.

All these crazy people acting like this baby is sooooo special is the reason they jad to go all extra for security. For God's sake, there was article yesterday about the crib they bought. The media AND the public needs to give it a rest.
